High-Res Startrek ships

High-Res Startrek ships

Hey folks.

There are some "ship designer" built startrek ships available, but I have yet to see any real modeled startrek hulls in the download section, so I thought I would put together some high res model conversions of popular startrek ships for GalCiv 2. I hope to cover all the classes from Tiny to Huge.

What I’ve done so far is the Magella class (because the curves are sooOOooo sexy), and I have a link to my progress thus far:

The model will run you about 260,000 triangles ( ! ), but I think that considering the poly count, the performance in GalCiv2 is incredible. Here you can see 10 of the things (2,600,000 faces in total) and as you can see from my frame rate that I am pulling about 10fps (from 60fps before the ships). This is with a Radeon 9800 pro and a P4 1.7. I think I can skim about 100,000 faces off the model with some more optimization.

I hope to cover the following ships, above Magella:

Some form of Runabout or shuttle for Tiny.
??? for small
Defiant for medium
Galaxy and Sovereign for Large
Promentheus for Huge.

Any requests? Suggestions? Cease and desist orders?

Let me know if anyone is interested in getting their hands on these models. My plan is to have them plug into GalCiv as normal ship hulls with mount points and all. Hopefully make use of the mod system soon enough.

I would just like to say, that despite the slight memory problem, I am still very interested in this Mod.

I've reviewed your images of the ships, and it seems there's a good possibility of sacrificing details to lower the memory requirements for most of the ships.
If this is even possible.
What do I know, it's half past 12 in the night, and I'm not an image-designer.
I use MS Paint for crying out loud.

Anyway, just wanted to show my continued interest in your work, despite the current issue.

Does adding these and other custom non-GC2 native ships to the game create a 6th, 7th.. etc ship style? or does it substitute an existing style???

To MOIISKA

There are only 5 playable ship styles in the game (6 if you count the dreadlords) so if you add ships they have to go in one of the existing styles (Terran, Altarian, Drengin, Yor, Iconian (I think those are the right names)). And you can have ships replace the existing ships or add them as additional ships.

Why does everyone say that? Well it is true that you can only have 6 selectable in game, you can have more. For example i have 11 ship styles and they all work fine.

He said 6 PLAYABLE. You can't select from more than six, so you can't play as more than 6.

Mine are still playable. I even made a mod that gave each race a unique ship style.

I was refering to the ship styles that come with the game. I apologize for saying anything misleading. You can make ship styles beyond the ingame ones. However, you don't have to make new styles, the ships can be added into the existing ingame ship styles.

Ion, I'd like to see how you do that then (not saying I don't believe you, I'm actually interested in that myself and thought it wasn't possible). You're saying that the non-AI player can pick from any of those 11 styles (as that's what I'm thinking)?

You see, you can have more styles but you would not be able to select them in game, you would have to mod the race config file. EX: You make a custom race and you create a new style by takeing some models from the other styles, copy and rename them to S6_....._0 or 1 or 2 etc. Then you go to my documents my games galciv2 then go down to the custom race config. Open it with notepad and change the ship style to 6. Then play. The AI never picks there style, its pre set but you can change that of course. If i misunderstood what you said tell me.
Someone may be wondering why rename it to 6 if there is 6 ingame. well humans use 0 instead of one. Just clearing that up.

OH.... interesting...

So now I see 3 major things I would ask from SD..

1) unlock the # of Majors and minors to be used in the game
2) unlock the # of ship styles that can be used
3) unlock the # of planets that can be in a system

but back to #2..

I am slow... give me a step by step.. will ya?

What he's saying is:
1. Create the new ships and name them as wanted.
2. When you put them in the GalCiv2\Gfx\Models (or GalCiv2\Mods\(Mod)\Gfx\Models), rename the ships for a given race to have all the same prefix, starting at S6_(name).
3. When you move to another race, change the prefix to a new, unused number (S7, for example).
4. Go into the Data\English\RaceConfig.xml (in the mods folder it'd be Data\RaceConfig\(name).xml as you can set the name yourself) and change the Number between the ShipStyle tags to match the number.
5. For the custom race, if your desired ship style is S6 or above, design the custom race as intended (pick a random ship style) and save the race. Then go to My Documents\My Games\GalCiv 2\(racename).raceconfig and open it in notepad. Set the number between the ShipStyle tags to the style desired.
6. Voila! You now have more than the normal 6 (after Dread Lords) design choices.
Yes, Ion, you understood what I meant. However, I wonder if a GUI modder could, through Desktop X, allow for more than 6 ship types to be displayed?

Very probable. Someone modded the race statistics screen to show ten races instead of 9.

Thank you.... I am going to have to try this with several of the ships I have seen of late... good work by the way.

I wouldn't mind being able to get that Magella class ship looks cool.

There is a good Star Trek website http://www.st-intelligence.com/begin.html that I’ve looked at and I would really like it if someone could make some of those ships, specially some Dominion/Cardassian/Breen
