Ship Upgrades in v1.1 BETA 3

That version is from memory - the version avaliable for download from Stardock on 10th April at any rate.

I make some upgrades for 4 ship designs (Small, Medium, Large & Huge) and then exit from the Ship Builder. I select a single ship on the Galaxy map, click upgrade and the upgrade dialogue box appears. When I click the box to upgrade all ships of this type, the total cost is always greater than it should be, by around 30% (sorry I haven't taken note of the exact numbers, will do so when I get home tonight and post them).

For example, one design costs approx 1044bc to upgrade. There are 19 ships of this design but when I click the box to upgrade them all the cost is something like 27k.

The problem has occured in both games I've played and is consistent across different ship designs.

Beta 3A: If you upgrade a ship on autopilot, the destination marker is orphaned and doesn't go away until a reload.

Repro steps:
1. Build a ship.
2. Set a destination far away. Note that a green circle is shown at the destination.
3. Upgrade the ship (you may have to select a different ship and upgrade all)
4. Press the turn button until the ship builds
5. Select a new destination

The green circle remains.

As of version 1.10 beta.
FILES/stability
Saved games do not load and bring up a blue screen message saying a problem has detected and your computer will be shut down to avoid further damage.
This is serious and I will attempt to provide technical data to the appropriate personell.
-Game randomly minimises to desktop and takes a while to load back.
-Attempting to play the campaign makes the game shut down with an error message galciv2 has encountered a problem and needs to close please tell microsoft about this problem.
-when campaign was working first mission never got completed even though all races had been defeated/allied.
GRAPHICS
Planets and ships occasionally have a stretching effect. I.E they seem to send out beams colored with their textures that fill up the screen and block viewing.

Ship Designer
-The subspace annihilator is not available even when researched on the tech tree.
-The doom ray has no thumbnail image and the model looks exactly like a plasma cannon.
-Occasionaly when scaling the doom ray the scale will invert so small becomes large and at the new large end of the scale the weapon is bigger than the largest battleships.
-The subspace blaster does less damage than disruptor???
-The game sometimes thinks i am trying to modify a core design of ship, when I am not.
When trying to upgrade a previous visually customised design the game states that the equipment is too large for the ship even if the racks are empty. I suspect this may be due to miniaturisation being researched byond the level of the ships original design.
-When a custom visual object goes through the body of the ship it becomes all dark as if it was at the bottom.
+improvement
Custom visual objects extremely difficult to rotate effectively, I recommend freeform using cursor keys.
Panning could be freeform as well.
There's never an attachment point on the front of the ship near the middle when you want one. OR more center line attachment points needed.
Underside of ships are too darkly lit.
It is extremley difficult to make a flying saucer, or a flying basin for that matter.

Planet Screen details.
Some of the citizens on the planet think they're living in {yourempirename} instead of the dominican republic or whatever it was I was playing as. They also think i'm called (hesheleadergender)
Diplomacy
The alien leaders talk about treaties and pacts exactly like they are trading commodities which is a little odd. E.G stop asking me to give you stuff, when you've requested theyattack someone etc.
Naming rooms.
The string holders of race and planet and ship names are a little on the short side. shortass drengis can afford to have sovereigntys but its tough luck if youre a jupiterian.
The text for the plague event does not fit into its box and I cant read all of it. Thats at 1024 x 768 resolution.

CIVILISATION MANAGER
The civ manager mentions that choosing a neutral alignment unlocks certain weapons and defenses. The tech tree reveals two trading and research bonuses but nothing in the line of weapons and defense.

CUSTOM RACE ISSUES.
Loading a custom race seems to assign it extra ability points over its ten limit and highlighting the ability tab in red, though you can still play the race.
Cant use custom race in battle of the gods scenario...which sucks.

MOD ISSUES
No obvious mod folder installed and rumours on the internet that it doesnt work properly.

Normally at the first sign of a blue screen I throw a game out of the window. Stardock sure got the addictive gameplay right, otherwise I wouldnt normally go through this.

No debug needed for this, as it's a non-crash/lockup/etc... Running Beta 3A (just installed this yesterday).

I noticed this the first time I played with 3A, but thought it might have been issolated. However, in this current game I'm playing, it has gotten worse.

I've started taking over the galaxy with influence and am taking Thalan, Iconian, and Altarian planets left and right without the need for invasion. I'll start invading some worlds soon, so we'll see if this is duplicated in invasions as well.

Anyway, to the point: many of the worlds I've been taking over with influence have had 2 - 4 starports and, in the case of the Thalans, 2+ orbital fleet coordinators (or whatever they are called). As we know, these are unique buildings and shouldn't be allowed to have these things scattered all over the planet. In some cases, the starports are in the process of being upgraded to other buildings. The build queue shows "Research Center (upgrading starport)" so I know this isn't just a display issue.

If I let the starports that are being upgraded complete, there isn't an issue. But if I personally choose a starport that isn't already being upgraded, I am no longer allowed to build ships on these planets but also can't build a new starport. So these extra starports and orbital fleet managers are just dead space on those worlds.

I have a saved game that has 3 or 4 of my worlds with the extra starports and fleet managers and can mail it to support if needed.

AI build "2" Econ capital on a PQ5 planet (BUG & being stupid??!) With high esponisage, I see that PQ5 have 1 already build while the other one is upgrading.

(I'ven't read the whole thread, srry if this repeat.)

I play only Rough difficulty.

Loving the enhancements so far...

on one of the latest betas (see the debug clip) I now am unable to select build nothing in the shipyard.

In the previous beta4 sometimes it would say it was building a ship and either the display would update to nothing or it would continue to say it was building a ship but no progress would be made and no ship produced when a shipyard was set to nothing.

Now when I click a planet and click build ship ->nothing (done from space, don't know if problem exists in other UI) the ship that was being built still shows up, subsequent turns show progress on the ship and the ship is produced.

Right now the planetary govoner system where you click on existing productions to change to another is the only way (click the ship I don't want any more of and click nothing then update build list). This kind of kills micromanagement as I am playing my first huge map where micro is seeming to be more important...

I have seperated out the debug.err file at the point where I noticed the problem as well as packaged my autosave and previous autosave. The last entries in the debug.err file should be from my repeatedly trying to turn off production of ships through the space UI and then to disable production through govoner (assuming any of that is tracked). I don't know how much to clip off from the botom so if you want my debug.err file entirely let me know.

I reset my resolution from 1024 x ... to 1240 x ... and when I restarted the game, the buttons were in the wrong place.

What do I mean? If I put my cursor on top of "new game", the button wouldn't highlight but if I moved the cursor an inch to the right of the entire button, it would light up and I could click on it. It was like this for all the buttons and buttons towards the edges of the screens are actually unclickable because I run out of room to find it. I haven't been able to see if this problem exists past the menus because I was never able to find where to click next.

After updating to beta 4 I launched the game only to find no text on the menu buttons or on any sub menu.

My problem is a bit difficult to explain. Simply put, I have no text where there should be text. No text on the opening buttons, no text on the in game buttons, no text when choosing galaxy size, no text when selecting number of opposing civilizations and difficulty, no text on planets (including quality number), no text on ship names, no text in shipyard construction options, no text on possible research choices (left side, where they are listed and colored by type). I do have text on the explanations of researches, in the lower left box of the planet screen when selecting something to build, and several other descriptive or text filled areas. The problem seems to be primarily affecting text that can be clicked on or potentially modified by the user (ships), if I had to take a guess at it. Anyway almost everything is misxing text now, which is making the game unplayable for me. Please fix asap! Here is my top debug info:

As a side note, any movies played or sound files run are staggered or delayed slightly, with the sound in the tutorials for example cutting in and out repeatedly. Any tips on how to fix that? If so, e-mail to [email protected]

1.1 Beta 4 locks up whenever I try to save a game, and yes, this affects autosave as well. No disk activity at all, but CPU usage is 100%, virtually all from GalCiv2.exe. This even happens if, as soon as a new game is created, I attempt to save immediately. Map size was largest, loose clusters, custom race (which existed prior to beta update); I haven't yet tried other game parameters. Longest I let it 'hang' was about 3 minutes before killing it.

Some issues I noticed in 1.1 Beta 4:

- In race selection/creation, some party descriptions differ from the actual values (e.g. populist: 20 vs 10%)

- When editing a pre-made race that has a certain bonus (e.g. Yor, 100% loyality), if you select a bonus in the same field, like loyality 10%, and then deselect it, the original bonus is lost and cannot be recovered. By the same token, is it intentional that the new bonus *replaces* the race bonus, instead of being added on top of it? (Race bonuses vs. abilities are generally somewhat confusing, but I don't think this belongs into the glitch thread...)

- After choosing "custom race" and pressing "reset", there are still race abilities left. They disappear the same way as with the base races when you select a similar bonus and deselect it again. If this is intentional, then I don't understand it

(Maybe there could be a clear separation between intrinsic, immutable race bonuses and abilities that can be freely selected?)

Weird glitch in beta 4:

At war with the Drengin for several turns. We're exchanging ships left and right and I'm slowly taking over their territory. One of my worlds gets hit with half a dozen transports over 2 turns, but with a 22 bil population and a huge soldiering bonus, I'm able to fend off the wave of invasions. Same turn the invasions hit, the Korx declare war on me (no idea why. Bribed by the Drengin? debug.err doesn't show that kind of stuff, so not sure what happened). Next turn, no communication with the Drengin. I go to attack one of their worlds with a fleet and get "Are you sure you want to attack defender XXXX, doing so will cause the Drengin to declare war on you". What? We're already at war. We've been destroying ships and invading planets every turn. I look at the diplomacy screen and see that I'm at "cool" with the Drengin and at war with the Korx.

No idea how peace was declared between me nad the Drengin. We never spoke. No council session, so no resolutions caused it. No random event, according to the debug.err.

Just for completeness, below is the last chunk of my debug file. Also, notice the weird last bundle of lines. Memory leak? Doesn't seem like it, since it's aware that it isn't freeing all the memory.

I'm having two intermittant graphics problems. The first is that if I try scrolling the main map to the edge of the universe, or to an unexplored area the display has a 'seizure' and then bounces back into the explored area I moved the map from.

The second is that at times the rotating ship and and planet images occasionally start spinning at an out of control rate, upto the point that the human colony ship in the new game wizard looks more like a wheel style space station than anything else.

EDIT: when the first problem occurs the box showing my position in the minimap disappears and when it stops seizing I end up being able to scroll back onto the map at seemingly random locations.

Crash to desktop from using invalid chars in a ship name. This doesn't happen every time, and so far I haven't been able to find out exactly what I'm doing differently to cause it only some of the time. I;m only describing the crash path here.

Open the shipyard, create a ship and attempt to name it with an illegal char in the name. Click OK in the dialog.

The dialog goes away without any warning. The displayed name is unchanged, and the design isn't added to the list of user made ones. This is the step that's inconsistant. Sometimes it works as intended and shows the error, occasionally it doesn't. When it doesn't the next steps will crash it.

Restart the shipyard. You'll see the error dialog.

Click OK. Game CTDs.

Here is a "modding" glitch.

I edited "PlanetImprovements.xml" and placed it in
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Mods\Data\PlanetImprovements

HOWEVER, instead of REPLACING the standard buildings, it now has *2 COPIES* of each building. I classify this as a bug.

When another race surrendered to me I found that many of the starports on my new worlds did not function, i.e. could not build ships. The starports are definitely present on the worlds, but the game will not allow me to build ships till I decommission the old one, then build a new one. Have save game of issue, will send to usual address with this same text... since game did not crash, didn't get a smart exception.

I've had these problems a lot when I get longer into the game, occurs when I atk or invade.

I just updated the graphics driver to a 1 month newer one and it seems to work better now.
well, at least until it crashed again and locked the whole system this time, and the error log didn't show anything.

YOu are not able to cancle ship building que from the quick build list even though you choose nuthing as a build option.If you dont cancle it within the ship yard it will continue to crap out the same ships even though you cancelled it.

Okay, here's what happened: I got about 5 minutes into a game, and then it crashed and auto rebooted my system. Same problem I've been having, although I now have a totally new graphics card. No idea what's causing this problem. I'm hoping this crash had something to do with the Beta. When I started Stardock Central it asked me if I wanted to update to the latest version of both GalCiv2 and Stardock Central, so I did. The place I took my computer to can't find anything wrong with the system in terms of hardware problems. The debug error report is below. In Beta 4 the game crashed at random! Sometimes even saved games while loading. When I reboot, the same saved game loads OK. Of course, loading ANY game (new or saved) takes about 2 to 5 minutes!!!!! Here is the debug error file from the latest Crash (I have another issue also-see below).

I also have a complaint about response times as my other problem FIRST occured on March 14th!! I understand that you may have too few people handling too many requests, but the responses that I have recieved have been less than stellar-WHEN I GOT ONE AT ALL!!!!!!!~!

THE SECOND PROBLEM IS THAT FROM MARCH 14 TO 17 AND MARCH 31 TO PRESENT, WHEN THE GAME SCORE IN SHOWN ON THE SCREEN, THE NEXT CLICK TAKES ME BACK TO THE MAIN MENU without ASKING ME IF I WANT TO SUBMIT THE GAME TO THE METAVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has nothing to do with serial numbers or checking for internet connect or the fact that I have DSL! There is something wrong with either the program or the MetaVerse Link. Everything that I have been told to try (not that I have been contacted about this more than twice) has not worked!!! Several other players have also lodged the same complaint and I have not seen any answer to the problem yet. Also it does not create a debug file for this!!!

It seems tha t every patch corrects some (but not all) problems, but creates other new ones. I am beginning to feel that however much I like the game, that my problems with it are being ignored because you already have my money. I would have thought from your past performance that you were interested in have repeat customers!!! I am beginning to think that is not the case and that I will not be a repeat customer of yours any longer as my problems are not being addressed by your support team.

As I said before, I realize that you may have too few people trying to handle to many request and problems, but not addressing a problem this serious (I think it is as bad as the Shipyard crash problem-which you still haven't fixed either) is piss poor customer support, espically since it has been MORE than a month since you were made aware of it. Maybe someone should remind you that without customers, you can't stay in business for very long.

Game 1.1 beta 4, masochistic AI.
After invading korx's planets, I noticed they were upgrading embasy to embasy. After I canceled the upgrade, the only thing I could build on the original embasy was the Habitat improvement.

I'm suffering chronic freeze ups with Beta 4. The machine overheats and locks up when the game saves, forcing a manual restart. And occasionally it just freezes as well. None of this occured in Beta 3b and earlier.


And to #323: Don't be a jerk. Beta 4 makes everybody's machine crash. Betas are not very well bug tested. That's why they're betas, not final products.
Most game companies don't provide any support AT ALL. Don't bitch that Stardock's 15 or so people can take more than a week to get back to you. Be glad they do it at all.
Besides, they're most likely working to address whatever issue for the final patch. If you can't wait- go back to 1.0X.
