Your all time favorite video/computer game is... [what]?

With a recent and coming surge of fairly well rated/reviewed video games coming out for the Xbox 360, and of course with the very well done and highly enjoyable GalCiv II by StarDock having come out in the last few weeks, it seems that there's a wealth of riches in the area of video/computer games.

Bethesda Softwork and 2K games' highly praised Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion just came out, and many are raving about it (both for PC and for the Xbox 360), though the required hardware for playing the game on a PC is pretty steep (at least if you want to play it with all of the graphical bells and whistles turned on), but I'm not intending this article to become a "the pc is better for gaming" or "consoles are better for gaming" fan-boy (or -girl) bashing fest.

The point here is for the reader to think through their own history of video gaming, on PCs, in arcades, on video game consoles, handhelds, etc., and then tell everyone what their favorite game(s) is/are. It doesn't have to be a current game (though I'm sure StarDock would love to hear/read that it's GalCiv 2, there's is no real correct answer here).

I can think of a few games along the way that I really enjoyed, some that I might really like to see updates of, or at least have available to play again. Those are the kinds of games I'm talking about. Games that you have very fond memories of, and which you'd love to play again, and again, and again, or at least to get one more great chance to play again.

Have some favorites of your own, toss them out here, and tell us all about them, or at least why you really like that game.

I'll add my own favorites later, as admittedly I need to think about things a bit and narrow down my list of choices. I could list quite a few, but I'd rather try to stick to just a few good choices that I can discuss. Of course, I might have to comment on and discuss some of everyone else's favorites along the way

My all time favorites are X-Com, MOO, and Steel Panthers. X-Com was a perfect blend of strategy and tactics. I think everyone know why MOO was great. Steel Panthers was a great tactical game.

My favorite current games are Rome Total War and Gal Civ 2.

Well, theres a few (Bear in mind the fact I'm 16, and really haven't been able to play MOO or anything like that). The Metal Gear series has always had very good strategic play which I like, probably more so (IMO) than splinter cell. One of my old favourites is the sims (I know. I need help) Because, I like to be god, yet have no actual responsibility like Black and White needs. The game that had the biggest impact on me was probably the first game I ever played, Dogfight on the Amiga. it crashed constantly, the graphics were ok at the time but dated awfully, but it was such fun to control every aspect of the plane. Currently I'm enjoying City of Heroes. Not much great about it in terms of graphics (new update hopefully fixing that ), but you're a superhero. End of. You're a superhero and you beat things up, it's great. Gotta recommend that game.

And here is the part that was as inevitable as Agent Smith is predictable, GalCiv2. Best 4x I've ever played BAR NONE. (go away civ4 people, leave me alone!), it's just more fun, and the ship designer is amazing, and about to get better. And the graphics, wow. If you've seen that 1 million pixel ship yet, you just KNOW this thing won't date until the ps4 is out. (Don't hold me to that quote though ) The tech tree is good to understand, and the AI gives someone like me (I'll make no allusions to being hardcore or l33t here, just alrightish) a good, fun challenge. I ENJOY being beaten senseless by an AI that doesn't cheat, it just outsmarts me.

My favourite game of all time is Neverwinter Nights....

This is mainly because I have always been a closet DM and to have the ability to make your own worlds and play them in a group just like the old days of Pen and Paper is beyond comparison. The hardest thing was always getting everyone in the same room at the same time... now you dont have to.

But I have to admit though... I completely and utterly disagree with the style in which both Bioware and subsequently Obsidian have chosen to develop the games. I think its insulting to their community and completely detrimental to what they are attempting to achieve. Both companies on occasion have said "Compared to other companies we do so much more for our community"..... well I wish they would take a look at Stardock, using that same model for comparison I think they could learn some serious lessons here.

Keep up the good work guys. The method you choose, the openness with your community, your willingness to "involve" people in the process of software design has guaranteed that I take a very close look at anything you produce in the future... and I have already passed on my praise to several other people who have also purchased your products.

Ever thought of doing RPGs?

My favourite game of all time is the one that really started my intrest in strategy games, Heroes of Might and Magic 2
( HOMM3 was also good). For my good old N64 I liked Ogre Battle 64, and of course who could forget another PC game Diablo II. I spent enough time to probably finish all of high school playing that game.

Can't believe that I forgot Chrono Trigger and X-Com:UFO
Thats the problems with lists, I always leave something off.

I never had the pleasure of playing Chrono Trigger when it first came out on SNES, but have played it via... cough cough other means.

Doom 1/2 for PC

Xcom:UFO for PC

Street fighter 2 turbo for SNES

lot of others. Those are the 3 I could pull out of my head.

All time favorite was Alpha Centauri-Alien Crossfire. I still play it occasionally. God how I wish someone would update that one. Brian Reynolds now of Big Huge Games (Rise Of Nations) was the designer as he was for Civ 2

Next would be MoO2 and the Civ series

First game that hooked me was AOE

My all time favorite is:

Fallout 2
Fallout 1
Shadowrun (Genesis)
Gemfire (SNES)
X-Com UFO Defense
X-Com Terror from the Deep
Star Control 2 (PC)
Star Fligth (Genesis)
Galactic Civilization 2
Master of Orion 2
Galactic Civilization 1
Master of Orion 1
Daggerfall
Betrayal At Krondor
Herzog Zwei
Suikoden 1 & 2

I'm suprise to see some of you guys are ol'school like me... My Favorite part of daggerfall was breaking into houses and finding naked ladies waiting for ya. Now that was a blast.

Shadowrun is coming to XBOX 360 btw. Betrayal at Krondor was also a great game, couldn't finish it cause when i got to the last chapter, all my food were spoiled, so i starved. But that was fun. Star Flight was a great game for Genesis. Not sure how many here played that, but i loved it. Space Opera rocks! As for Star Control, loved that too becauswe of the humor.

And as far as Fallout, that was a great series. Looking forward for the 3rd one. Hope they don't screw that up.

The First game I ever played seriously (I mean that it opened my eyes to more adult oriented gameplay and none of that jumping on goomba crap) was Betrayal At Krondor. That was the game that Popped my Gaming Cherry.

So, what game popped you guys cherries??

I think I'm going to go against the grain and catagorize my selections by genre rather than system:

RPG - Diablo

RTS - Starcraft

Turn Based Strategy - Final Fantasy Tactics or Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Puzzle - King's Quest V (purely for nostalgic reasons, not sure if it was really a "best game ever" game, but it was one of my first pc games)

Going purely by games that have had the longest air time:

Star Control - Megadrive (I think it was called something else in the USA, as was the megadrive console)
Soul Blade/Calibur - Playstation
Dawn of War - PC
MoO 2 - PC (at least I think it was 2....was a very long time ago!)

Intense but brief love affairs:

Neverwinter Nights - PC
Warzone 2100 - Playstation & PC
Galaxian Moon Cresta - Arcade
Alpha centauri - PC
Total war series - PC
And probably quite a few more that I can't think of just now.

Of the table top variety:

Warhammer 40K
Classic Battletech
Mechwarrior cmg

Too early to say where Galciv2 will sit yet, but it's looking good so far!!

This type of lookback requires that you suspend time for a bit and try to put yourself 'back in the day'.
What game(s) REALLY had an impact on me?
I have gone back in recent years and pulled out my old Atari 2600 and the large case of games I have packed away with it. I think I sat down for an hour and went through 30-40 cartridges. The only game I could really stand to play for more than a few minutes ended up being Keystone Cops. My gaming experience has just moved so far from the days of Pong and Combat (as I'm sure most people's has)... but a list of games comes to mind that will always bring a fond smile.
Non-gamers have no concept of what we are talking about here, but I suppose they aren't reading this either...
This is my list with no particular reasons attached. Just a damn good time.

(Atari)
River Raid
Yar's Revenge
(C64)
Bruce Lee
Below the Root
The Bard's Tale (and II - but the first was special)
Might and Magic II (I missed I for some reason)
Montezuma's Revenge
Boulderdash
Archon
M.U.L.E.
SSI Gold Box Games (spent many, many hours mapping out on graph paper...)
Zak McCracken and the Alien MindBenders
(Man - a whole slew of C64 games come to mind that I played the heck out of. That was seriously a good system - and in it's time EB was BUILT around it! ....Beachhead... Impossible Mission... Ghostbusters... Silent Service... Airborn Ranger... Arkanoid....)
(PC)
Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss (Awesome!)
Doom II
HOMM 2 (and 3)
Ghost Recon
Deus Ex (1 not 2)
(PS)
Roll Away

So many others I could put down, but these are ones that just stuck out.. and I need to get back in to my galactic conquest...

I love classic games, Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite, and I'm also a fan of Tetris, and the Kirby series (yes, he does suck), and that good old Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt that every NES owner has...can't beat a good old 2D sidescroller like Kirby or SMB...1943 was also a good one

For the computer, a WW1 aircraft game, Wings of Glory, was my favorite game (back in the pre-pentium/Windows 95 era, a good old 486 running 3.11)

Hearts of Iron 2 is my current waste of time, and it's a great strategy game, mixing RTS and risk-style for a game of world domination set in WW2...play as any nation from Germany to Tannu Tuva.

Starcraft was an excellent game, not a big fan of FPS, but I've been known to play some Goldeneye and Perfect Dark

RPG? Final Fantasy (the original)

Arcade games? How many quarters did the Raiden games take from me?

Starflight- (PC-1988?) Probably one of the most inventive sci-fi themed games of it's time. You start with some cash to buy a ship and crew, and you mined and searched the galaxy for habitable planets and tradeable resources to make money to upgrade your ship and crew. Each planet was uniquely created with surface maps and resources everytime you started a new game (with over 800+ planets per game!), so no 2 games were ever the same. All presented in stunning EGA graphics!

It, too, took a slightly humorous bent with the material (especially the manual). In fact, if you waited too long in the StarDock (*GASP* that's were it came from!), your little astronaut would start tapping his foot every few seconds! Almost makes me wish I had a copy and a computer that could run it..

Others:
DOOM: all *natch* (PC)
Final Fantasy 6 & 7(PSX)
HomeWorld: Cataclysym (PC)
Carnage Heart (PSX)
Gran Turismo series (PSX/PS2)
Imperium Galactica II: Alliances (PC)
Civilization 2-4 (PC)
SimCity (PC)

Classic Best Games:
Falcon 3.0
Mechwarrior 2
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
Civilization 2
Alpha Centauri
Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords

I'm hesitant to list anything too recent, though I wouldn't be suprised if GalCiv2 makes this list in the future. And I went ahead and listed KotOR II despite its relatively short lifespan because it has more philosophical thought packed into it than the sum total of all other games I've played. (And huzza for the writer of that game to be working on Star Trek: Online)

Currently played games:
GalCiv2
Mechwarrior4 series and addons
Mafia (Campain mode's story is rediculously immersive)

Great Games I underplay:
Empire Earth II (best RTS I've ever touched)
Lock On: Modern Air Combat (only if you're hardcore about hardcore flight sims would you dare play this)
