Your all time favorite video/computer game is... [what]?

Your all time favorite video/computer game is... [what]?

With a recent and coming surge of fairly well rated/reviewed video games coming out for the Xbox 360, and of course with the very well done and highly enjoyable GalCiv II by StarDock having come out in the last few weeks, it seems that there's a wealth of riches in the area of video/computer games.

Bethesda Softwork and 2K games' highly praised Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion just came out, and many are raving about it (both for PC and for the Xbox 360), though the required hardware for playing the game on a PC is pretty steep (at least if you want to play it with all of the graphical bells and whistles turned on), but I'm not intending this article to become a "the pc is better for gaming" or "consoles are better for gaming" fan-boy (or -girl) bashing fest.

The point here is for the reader to think through their own history of video gaming, on PCs, in arcades, on video game consoles, handhelds, etc., and then tell everyone what their favorite game(s) is/are. It doesn't have to be a current game (though I'm sure StarDock would love to hear/read that it's GalCiv 2, there's is no real correct answer here).

I can think of a few games along the way that I really enjoyed, some that I might really like to see updates of, or at least have available to play again. Those are the kinds of games I'm talking about. Games that you have very fond memories of, and which you'd love to play again, and again, and again, or at least to get one more great chance to play again.

Have some favorites of your own, toss them out here, and tell us all about them, or at least why you really like that game.

My favorite game of all time:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

This game is just beautiful in every respect, from the perfect pacing of the gameplay to the graphics and sound that still hold their own in the present day. The game allows players to explore with doing things in so many different ways and completing objectives in such diverse order, that I still go back and have fun playing it.

Honorable mentions:

Half Life (PC)
Deus Ex (PC)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
Knights of the Old Republic (PC)

Here's my top five, excluding GC2

5 - Tetris (GB)

I can remember long drives on the school bus (25-35 minutes) playing this on the original Game Boy. Repetative but oh-so-difficult to master

4 - Galactic Civilizations (PC)

A wonderful 4x Game, I remember thinking that the thing i missed was tactical combat and ship design were the two things I'd add to it -- and I got 50% of them when stardock released GC2

3 - X-Com UFO Defense (PC)

A wonderfull blend of Turn based Squad combat as well as overall strategic planning and squad development -- I bought the collectors edition for the sole purpose of having this run properly under Windows XP

2 - World of Warcraft (PC)

I think they somehow managed to send crystal meph or crack cocaine over the internet with this one -- addictive social gameplay makes this a great game.

1 - Final Fantasy VI (SFC/PS1)

Compelling storytelling and character designed made this one of the best ever CRPGs I have ever had the privilage to play. I have a copy of this for the Super Famicom (of course i don't have a SFC to play it on, nor could I read it if I did) -- but it was still an amazing game on the SNES or PS1 release. I'm waiting for the re-release on DS...

Just my two cents.

1. Stars! would be the perfect game if not for better diplomatic/alliances & more sophisticated economy angles.
The battle module of Stars! is strategically very deep, with *each* ship components interacting with your opponent's ship components that directly influence battle results.

eg: jammer ship components to protect against missiles with battle computers doing just the opposite (battle computer/jammer arms race), cloaking ship components that forces a sensor/cloaking component arms race, researching both Lasers and Missiles in your fleet actually viable in Stars!, unlike GC2..., and minefields in Stars! so you can't do cheesy tactics like Warp9+ sidestepping computer AI defenses like it's starting to happen with GC2...

2. Alpha Centauri for good diplomatic/alliances, and its World Wonders which give the first player to research this unique and unbalancing bonuses... (and whoever captures the city with the World Wonder inherits this bonus too)....
micromanagement is kept to a minimal in this SMAC...

I'm still looking for the hybrid cross between Stars! (for its deep battle strategy) and Alpha Centauri (diplomacy)...
GC2 is getting closer to this target, but still quite lacking in depth of battle strategy (like Stars!) from what i've seen closer up...

So many good games. So many classics.
But here's one nobody mentionned:

BATTLETOADS (nes)

My brothers and I played it like crazy. It was the only sidescroller where you could fight the other players and when you'd smacked them dead with a steel rod, you'd just say "oups sorry" with a goddamn smile.... haa so many good memories

Always hard to choose favourites but the oldest games that I still have fond memories of are:

Star Control 2- An awesome story line with gameplay that felt really open ended (though I'm not sure how free it really was). Numerous alien races each with their own characteristics, ships and even their own theme music. Also had some of the funniest dialogue I've seen in a game, although I hear GalCiv2 does pretty well, havent had time to check it out yet... Only just received my copy yesterday. New Zealand is always slow at getting games and our broadband is only just better than dial-up .

X-Com 1 - As someone mentioned before it had great strategy and tactics feel to it. You were always just a few minutes away from completing something, be it completing research, shooting down UFO's or defending your base, so it kept you to in the "one more turn/day" mood.

Modern games I like are:
Diablo 2- Just plain addictive with finding new items. A real time waster.

Knights of the Old Republic- Loved the story line. Don't know why I kept playing after I finished though, guess it was just fun gameplay. Who doesn't like running around with lightsabres?

Starcraft- Still my favourite RTS. Another good story for the campaign and frantic gameplay in multiplay.

I love many games but there was only one game so far that totally sucked up a breif part of my life, I own more than one copy of, I still go back to every couple of years, and is still as fun and engaging every time I play it:

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS2).........simply brilliant.

If I were to pick an honorable mention, I would have to pick the series that I have been Uber-fond of since its creation. Not all the games in the series have been gems, but I always have more fun when a GOOD iteration of the series comes out than with almost any other series of which I am a fan:

Mortal Kombat (many platforms).............I still sing that %#@& song.

I have not played a whole lot of Galciv2 yet(I just got it), but I am hoping that it will shoot into the top of my list.

Ok, new and old these are THE games I STILL find to be my favorites.

Deus Ex (warren spector is the man)
Deus Ex 2 (good in some ways over the original worse in others either way the story was completed)

Elder Scrolls4: Oblivion ( never played Dagger fall so I can't compare, but this is a great great game)

NeverWinter Nights + all expansions + user modules = never leaves the hard drive (playing since release)
Baulders Gate Series

Fallout1
Fallout2 (Why can't there be a fallout 3 or fallout online or something ..waaaaa)

Sentinel Worlds 1 ( this ancient game is still good by even todays standards, It was incredibly ambitious, doubt anyone will make anything that comes close to it ever again)

Myst series (yeah you heard me, great story line and imagination)
Uru ( so incredibly detailed, I felt like an anthopologist and archeologist)
The Longest Journey ( you should play this)

Chrono Trigger ( master piece)
Beyond Good and Evil (another master piece)
Zelda series (ocrina of time is a favorite)

SystemShock
TerraNova
Thief 1, 2, and 3

Halo (dunno, I just don't tire of it)

Red Orchestra
Swat 4
Raven Shield
FEAR (best sound ever! Creepiest game ever! Incredibly deep story. The ONLY game to give me bad nightmares )
Battlefield 2
Jedi Knight series (it's all about the saber battles)
Tribes series ( I can't believe this series is dead....it was soooo good, awsome IP)

GTA vice city (despite the controversial theme, you give credit to a great gameplay model)
Ninja Gaiden (the new one)
Rally Sport (lurv racing games...good ones)
Colony Wars series (wow this was good stuff back on the ps1)
Twisted Metal series
Splinter Cell
(really like this ninja series of games on ps1 ps2 and xbox....grrr can't remeber name though...Stealth ..something)
Hitman series (ok, I like the whole stealth thing)

American Mcgee's ALICE (they should have made this for consoles idealy, but man is this a great adventure)

Xcom
Jagged Alliance series

Nexus the Jupiter Incident (engaging story, very cool sci-fi)
Independence War (wow this game was cool)
Freespace 2
X-wing vs. Tie- Fighter series

Rise of Nations
Age of Empires 2
Total Annihilation
Rome:Total War (is this game epic or what?)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
Kohan: Arimans Gift
Dungeon Keeper 2
Syndicate (oldie but goodie, but perhaps nostalgia is blinding me on this one)

Civ4 (a master piece)
Galciv 2 (not sucking up here, this really is a great 4x game, in time this too will be a master piece)
Sid Miers Alpha Centuri
Moo2 (still good in some respects, definately has it's bad points these days)
Master of Magic ( Homm and Age of Wonders have nothing on this game)
Magic the gathering (ether lords2 provided a subsitute for this game but in the end the real deal wins)

The Sims2 + Expansions (Yeah...you heard me)
Creatures series (facinating artificial life sim, modeled biology, neural nets, dna, the works, very cool)

That about covers all my all time favorites out of the bajillion games I've played. Most of these I still own and play.

I've poured a lot of time into Tropico.
Sim City, the original all the way to Rush Hour, I've played them all.
The Myst series is outstanding.
I had a love affair with Europa Universalis 1 and 2, I bought other paradox games but I never liked any of them as much as EU, though I have yet to give Victoria a fair shot.
For consoles, I play Gran Turismo, Harvest Moon, Final Fantasy Tactics, Super Mario Kart, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Fable, ESPN NFL, NHL, and MLB 2K5...

But my all time favorite game of all time is...
Virtua Fighter 4. I had a friend at just about the same skill level as me, and when we fought, it was more fun than anything. There's nothing quite like the feeling of reversals.

StarCraft (I still play it)
Alpha Centauri (never gets old)
Super Mario Brothers (all the 2D ones and Kart)
Doom (!)
Tempest (1980s shooter)
Pac-Man

I like the first two Dark Forces games and feel at home in them.

And I love a modified version of Duke3d.

Civilisation 1, of course.

My favorite when I was a kid was pac man. Then tetris. Now my favorite is probably dance dance revolution. Not a big gamer but those are ones that I enjoy.

It's kind of funny thinking how far games have come. Our first game system was an odyssey. I remember there was a game that basically was a little blip that went back and forth between two lines. You moved the line to keep it from going out. Remember when their were no levels it just kept getting faster and faster until you died. Now they have old school games that you can just plug into the tv for like $15. Maybe I'll get them just for the trip down memory lane.

Ultima III
Pirates! (both the original and the recent redux)

Broke my gaming teeth on that old Atari 2600 ... Recently found one of the Atari nostalgia devices and picked it up. I was playing and thinking "Wow, all the memories" when my son walks up to me and said, "Man, they need to learn how to do graphics!" After I stopped laughing (about 30 minutes later) I finally explained to him what was going on ...
