Galactic Civilizations II: 1.0X released

AI updates, bug fixes, usability enhancements, oh my!

Galactic Civilizations II v1.0X has been released.  If you have previously downloaded one of the pre-releases you'll want to update to this version.  Version 1.0X inclues a bunch of new options including GPU throttling, video controls, tweaks to game balance, bug fixes, and much more. In theory this version should resolve all known compatibility issues that we have control over (users absolutely need to make sure they have recent video drivers and if they have a dual-core AMD to make sure they're running the latest chipset drivers if they run into any issues).

You can read the full list of changes HERE.

A lot of time has gone into cleaning up the ship design stuff.  The ship designer in the game has kind of taken on a life of its own. We're glad people love it. We've done our best to make things like upgrading and modifying easier to do in this version and more robust.  As one person in the forum put it, it's like having a CAD program bundled with a game (though a lot easier to use of course).

You can download it from Stardock Central or from the Downloads page.

There is no list of the changes in 1.0X.010 (just released) from 1.0X.009.

One thing I noticed (and do not like) is that it is no longer possible to make changes to an existing design; you have to make the new design from bare components.

The line editor (used for such thing as entering a ship class name) still needs to be redone, as the existing one is EXTREMELT awkward to use.

The special abilities of each races are STILL not properly editable.

Hmm... I don't see the update in Stardock Central. It should be up there?

Yeah, they threw outh the baby with the bathwater on the ship design upgrade feature. Before you could swap out your components, now it just keeps the jewelry! Don't see why they changed that, since before it still kept the jewelry anyway.

But one patch was released 4 days to 1 week ago... is this an updated verison?

Yes, I would like to see the option to just replace/upgrade components in addtion to starting with a clean hull with jewels.

was just saying that big brand-names get flamed down real quick when they release a very buggy game - though they still sale.

Stardock's saving grace is that they are an indie developper who have a great fanbase supporting them and spreading around the word and also their customer service/dedication to patching it up real fast.

I understand what you're saying but I don't think Stardock has gotten cut any extra slack. If anything, they don't get the benefit of the doubt.

Civ IV didn't even run out of the box for most ATI card users remember? Did even ONE review mention that? None I could find. To say GalCiv 2 is riddled with minor bugs seems like an exageration to me. I have been playing since the night they released it and not had any crashes or any problems to speak of. The forums seem pretty quiet when it comes to real bugs. The "bugs" I see listed usually are things that are cosmetic like whether the moon should rotate counter clockwise instead of clockwise in the name of astroaccuracy or whatever.

Yep, race creation is still broken. Right now, it looks like the only reason to choose certain races over others is because you like their name or look.

And that may well stay broken, in my case. I think I'm done downloading all these 25 meg patches that are posted in such a way that download preservers like Getright won't function. You know, not everyone has a fast connection, or even lives in an area where such a thing is available. It's *incredibly* annoying for the server's connection to crap out three or four times halfway through, as it did for me on both patches. Part of the problem is that both patches seem to contain the "bonus pack" material. Why not separate the patch from the bonus material, so that people who already patched the game once don't have to download all those megs of stuff they already have? The whole thing doesn't make sense at all - I could point out many examples of how Stardock has been friendly to gamers/customers, so why would they choose such an intensely user-hostile way to update their game?

I'm tempted now to just leave GalCiv2 in that huge box where I keep all the other games that seemed really cool, but ended up having too many problems to bother with. But my friends have reminded me that Stardock takes pride in good customer service, so I posted my disatisfaction here in a non-hostile, non-rating way. Perhaps I will get a good answer.

just wondering when your gonna fix the bug with planet city lights not working properly such as either not showing up at all for some people or being totally randomized for others. Full details are in this thread that has been largely ignored...

I posted the following in a thread on the main forum, but since it's related to the new patch it probably should go here. On the main forum it's already slipped near the bottom of page 2 in two hours and so probably will never be seen again!

"I hate to be contrary, but I'm not so sure I like the new method of upgrades. Before when you selected "Upgrade" no components would be removed, but after the latest patch selecting "Upgrade" will remove all but the jewelry. Supposedly this was because some people had difficulties finding and removing the non-jewelry and the linear strip (below the 3D window) that displayed the actually components was somewhat erratic.

My problem is that sometimes I'm just doing an upgrade to, for instance, change out the engines to get more speed. I don't want to have to remember (or write down) what weapons and other components were on the ship so that I can re-add them as part of the upgrade. Getting the components wrong also adds to the cost when you upgrade one of your ships on the main map. Doing this "minor mod" was easy before, but now it's a longer process with more chance of error.

What I'd like is that when I select "Upgrade" a pop-up appears and asks "Keep existing non-jewelry components?". Answer yes and it works just like before the patch, answer no and it works like after the patch."

Just a thought

Well, patchs on the website are whole patchs corresponding to new files since the release version. So this include the bonus pack. Now, if the computer on which your game is installed has an internet connection, you may want to try Stardock Central for doing the upgrade: it will download only the new files, and can resume download if it is interrupted.

Why not an option in the options screen then?

If it only downloads new files and can resume, I may well try that. I purposefully waited a few days before looking at this thread again (I was aggravated when I made that post), so I feel a little more calm now. I still wish they had fixed the race editing, though.
