lol.... you never played Star Control? Link

Really cool game series, although number 3 was very poor, bit like Moo really.

You could certainly mod ships and species to be like the ships and species in StarControl. But, by the nature of the game (the three attacks with 3 defenses, etc), it wouldn't really capture the feeling of StarControl. Unless you were able to give each species different kinds of tech trees with different ship abilities and so forth, it would just feel like a reskin. Not a real StarControl game.

SC2 is one of the best games ever, IMHO. GC2 is great, but it doesn't have the real-time action and adventure components to make for a good SC2 mod, I don't think.

FYI, Shrapnel games sells a nifty little space action/adventure game called Wierd Worlds that captures a small bit of the SC2 feel.

SC2 is indeed one of the best games ever.

I was a bartender in those days and I'd come home from work around 3-4am. While the rest of the house was spleeping, I was playing SC2 until sunrise.

Sometimes I knew what to do next, but I remember being lost most of the time. I resorted to scanning every planet one by one to find the next clue. If you're familiar with the game, you realize the enormity of such an undertaking. When I finally found that next clue, it would invariably point to somewhere clear across the galaxy. Just getting there was always an adventure.

My memory's fuzzy but IIRC you had to plan your route to a distant destination with rest stops along the way because you never had enough fuel. Running out of gas in deep space = bad. If you did, you'd sit there and wait for a random resupply ship. Most often, out of gas or at full burn, you'd come under attack. Everyone had a favorite ship, and losing one was positively devastating.

Eventually, I had a friend print a walkthrough from the internet - such as it was at the time. I had to. I otherwise never would've scored with that Syreen.

edit: changed 'bratender' to bartender - although maybe that would've been a better job

i know all of you whom have played SC2 will hate me for this but i found that SC3 was (at least for me) way better and had a better story line, maybe its me, maybe i should go to an instetution, maybe im gay(im not), but i know that after playing SC2 for about 3 hours i was beyond bored and gave up and now am waiting for SC timewrap(maybe itll be more enjoyable) and ill continue the endless search for a dl of SC3

You won't find many SC fans who agree with your stance on SC3.

From a basic 'bought to you by the Star Control universe' I think a mod could work. Slotting in the races wouldn't be too hard - although you might need new 'attributes' to make Mycon or Chenjesu - and even the art would be fairly basic. It's only if you try to create a mini-SC inside GC2 you'll run into problems, as noone uses one type of ship, there's technological progress, and the SC races are on distinct power levels. You could make a very SC-y campaign, however.

Frankly, I think it'd be neat to just incorporate the races with their characteristic attributes and ship designs, and leave it at that.

I liked SC3 too. especially as it came with SC1 and SC2 in the same box.

I enjoyed SC3. Not as much as SC2, but it was still a fun game. Especially the part that finally revealled the true nature of the Precursors. My favorite ship was still the humans.

My idea was primarily based around retrofitting the SC races into the game (possibly with a scenario whereby the Alliance races played off against the Hierarchy) rather than a SC style game mod. I always found the scenario mode in SC1 quite appealing so I think it would work quite well in the GC2 universe.

Now that I've played around with GC2 a bit more, the 'scenario' play would be very suited to a SC mod. Although anyone who just puts attributes and art in for SC races gets my vote. GC2 + 'Launch Fighters' FTW.

SC3 had bad design. From the 3D starmap to the uninspired (and crap) Crux ships to the 'wow the Ur-Quan went evil again, never saw that coming' to generally farting all over the story from SC2 - even getting the research wrong in places.

thats what made it fun for me i loved how the 3d star map worked since it was more realistic, of course the suns would move that much in real life since for one orbit in our solar system is lets say 1mil years(dont know dont care, so dont argue), also i loved the colony building aspect of it and how you could run out of fuel which made it more imperative at the start to go looking for nearby planets. instead of being able to fly across the universe on the first turn.

SC3 had some good ideas in it. The problems with the game were:

1: It damaged the SC universe. The mysteries mentioned in SC2 were all solved. Thus making them not mysteries. And the solution to those mysteries were kinda silly and underwhelming. Possibly because the original makers of SC2 were not involved in any way with SC3.

2: The ideas were never really taken to their logical conclusion. The design was interesting, but developmentally immature.

3: It didn't have the whimsical/serious feel that SC2 was able to pull off.

4: Anamatronic videos of the aliens was an awful idea. Better than bad CG, but I would definately have preferred hand drawings to either.

5: The Syreen are supposed to look hot. In SC3, they most certainly didn't.

6: The new races were, by and large, kinda boring and generic. And their ships were either incredibly weak or amazingly strong. And they used a lot of derivative special powers (new kinds of shields, new cloaks, etc).

also i loved the colony building aspect of it and how you could run out of fuel which made it more imperative at the start to go looking for nearby planets. instead of being able to fly across the universe on the first turn.

Are you suggesting this in opposition to SC2? Because in SC2, I know you can run out of fuel, and have fuel issues for a significant part of the game.

Wow Star Control 2 was the reason I got into gaming hardcore.

Previously I had played all the games before that...commander keen, doom, wolfenstein, duke nukem, star control 1, leisure suit larrys...

but SC2 was what got me into gaming and gaming addiction!

How would you solve the problem of the UrQuan Dreadnought's drones? Those things were awesome. pew pew pew pew!

Wow... that game is so seriously old. I remember ... wow, I'm also seriously old. haha

God, I loved Star Control II.

Does anyone remember what the name of a Sega Genesis game was that was similar to Star Control, except you were only the crew of a ship of humans?

Star Control and Star Flight were my favourite Mega Drive (yeah, I'm Australian, sue me) games too. It always amused me that Star Flight was so hard they basically gave you a walkthrough in the manual, or else you'd never be able to follow all those obtuse clues.

Triva: SF was originally a PC game. The PC game is fundamentally the same, but staggeringly ugly (CGA) and unwieldy. Starflight2 was more of the same but had an easier-to-follow story that puts the series up there with Star Control.
