STICKY: Problems getting the game started? Post here!

We're here to help!

IF you've installed the game and cannot get it to even get into a game, then this is the place.

IF you're able to play the game and run into a problem later, find the other thread to post reports. This thread is only for people who have installed the game and simply can't get it to work for some reason.

If you run into same basic problem such as:

a) Game doesn't load

b) Game causes your computer to catch fire

c) Game formats the hard drives of your neighbor's computer even though it's not connected to the net.

d) Some other basic problem that is keeping the game from running for you.

Then post here.

WE NEED:

1) Your debug.err info (which is located in your GalCiv II directory)

2) Any other info you think is pertinent (such as what you were doing)

ALSO:

MOST COMMON REASONS:

a) You're running your desktop in 16-bit color

or

b) You have ancient video drivers.

Make sure you've updated to the latest version of the game! Click on the downloads links above.

When I start the game my screen goes black, then I get a cursor for a few seconds, after which I am dumped back to my desktop. I meet or exceed all requirements, although my sound card is a bit long in the tooth but I have had no problems with other games. Error report from the game directory follows. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am running the game on my laptop which has a 16:9 display and 1024x600 resolution. The graphics chipset is intel 82852. When the game loads, the screen stays black, however, I get an info message that the minimum resolution is 1024x768 - could that be the reason?

I enjoyed the original GalCiv a lot on the go, so I would appreciate any way to make it work with a 1204 or 800x600 resolution.

I was able to play the game intially when it was released, but now when I formated my pc and reinstalled everything the way it was, and installed the game, I can see the game, the intro and everything, but the image is fuzzy and seems to be "SPLIT".
Here is my DEBUG.ERR file contents

Ok, I finally got the game running today. It turns out that during initialization the game might have been defaulting to my fax/modem for sound instead of using my sound card. Anyway, going into the Win98SE control panel and changing the sound playback setting to game compatible device seemed to do the trick. However, it is odd that this is the first time that I have encountered this particular problem. On an unrelated matter, has anyone noticed that the game starts to hang after a couple hours of play? Could be a memory leak.

When I try to start the game the screen turns partly black and then freezes. Here is the debug.err file:

Now here's the catch. I started the game once successfully, then changed the game resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x800. It prompted me to restart the game, at which point my problems began. This makes me think that maybe it is having trouble changing my screen resolution. Its possible that I could successfully start the game if I changed my desktop resolution to the same as the resolution of the game itself, but 1280x800 is not one of my resolution options.

Is there a way to change display settings without launching the game? Any other thoughts on what the problem might be?
I have gotten the game to work on and off since the first flawless time,, but still only initializaes 1/20 attempts, often with many restarts in between. I definitely think the problem is resolution related. That is, I think the game is waaaay to finicky about what what resolution it wants to start in, and has trouble automatically switching between resolutions, after which it gives up. Or something like that. Yes I'm running the latest version, the debug.err looks exactly the same as before, and I am running all the recommended settings (32bit, 1024x768 -or- 1280x1024). Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

PS. AThimND: you can change almost all major settings by opening, editing, and saving the prefs.ini files using Notepad, should be in your "My Documents/My Games/GalCiv2/" folder. Note however, that having learned the ins-and-outs of this file, and much experimentation, my version still is a big fat baby about resolutions, no matter what I try, and this problem has not been resolved by Stardock. SOMETIMES (very rarely), I can get the game to start by deleting the prefs.ini file altogether, forcing the program to start from scratch on the next execute. You might try this, but don't let it fool you into thinking the problem is solved if it works, cause it certainly wasn't for me.

My game does the intro but then dumps me back to the desktop. The fact that the intro works seems to make the drivers I have ok. Anyway, here is my debug.err

I experience a problem similar to what racerx285 experiences. I have gotten GalCiv II to run once or twice, but I have tried maybe 4-5 times. When it doesn't work, my computer does a hard restart (no shutting down). I'm pretty sure I'm at the most recent version and I have the Collector's Edition extensions installed. Here is my debug.err:

Hi there,

I just wanted to check in before I went out and bought a new video card or something. Any insights anyone might have are most appreciated. I have as of yet been unable to play the game.

I have software mouse pointer, as well as all sound and video effects turned off.

Thanks,
Ben

not sure where this should go but i set my game to window mode and now when i start the game and get to the main menu..i can't click on the menu buttons..i click but nothing happens and nothing highlights/selects

and thus i can't return to the options screen to change it back
Reply #13 Top
I can launch the game in a window, but not full screen. The window mode runs very slowly.
When I try to launch full screen, 1024 X 768 turns black (I have my usual resolution set higher, do part of my desk top shows. If I change resolution to 1024X768, then the entire screen is black), the GCII cursor shows up, and then nothing.
I have current drivers, latest patch.

Any help?

I have the same problom as Throrr and am not going to clog this with another debug.err (It says the same thing basicly)

I would just like to add that changing your virtual memory, changing your mouse and updating my driver didn't help at all (I also double checked the box and i know that i do not have any missing requirments).

Any help would be very apreciated.

I had originally posted this under the "known issue list", but this thread seems to be a more proper place.

My issue is almost exactly the same as the poster AThimND reported.

I was able to start the game up fine the first time. I set the resolution to 1680x1050 in the graphics options and then restarted. Half of my screen went black until I force-quit GC2.

My debug.err:

Intro plays, game loads, select race/competitors and the load screen works. Game screen corrupts and system bogs down to about 10seconds a frame before completely crashing. Usually takes entire computer down with it. Caused one reboot.

Things tried:
Checked system temperatures (cpu and gpu)
Updated video drivers to latest
Updated sound card drivers to latest
removed un-needed pheriphals
killed background apps
tried various resolutions
tried various colour bit depths
turn off AA
checked all boxes under "performance"
reinstalled graphics drivers
rolled back graphics drivers
tried on seperate operating system on the same machine
tried uninstalling GalCiv2 and redownloading base module
tried hardware mouse mode
ran memory tests to check for faulty RAM (unlikely - I'm a 3D modeller, the number of apps I have that massively stress the RAM is insane)
Turned audio hardware acceration down to basic
Turned off framerate throttling.
Tried increasing desktop refresh rate.

I've noticed that most debugs end with "setting size..."

Good news.

To fix the problem I was seeing (half the screen goes black, GC2 doesn't start), I opened the prefs.ini file to try and set the multisample rate down to 0. I noticed that the prefs.ini file had the DisplayWidth set to 1050 and the DisplayHeight set to 1680. I must have accidentally selected this setting instead of the 1680x1050 that I wanted. A simple flip, and things are working great.

I was also able to fix my problem by setting multisample to 0. considering there are a range of problems/fixes, I wont bother to post my err, as I cant see how you could possibly figure out which error goes with which fix. but it does seem to be a reasonable fix if that is your problem. just one more thing to try I guess.

Not a bug, seem to have a copy protection problem.

Picked up game on release and it worked okay (were problems but they were from my comp at this end).

However was replacing my computer. Got new machine, set it up, installed and patched game.

Now im getting 'the product appears to be validated but the serial number or machine SID dont match.'

Seems Im hitting copy protection and need to sort it out. Same IP address, same disk, same login/registration etc etc etc. Odds are I will need to goto support to fix it but going to post here first.

TheDrink, is your crash accompanied by the game screen seriously distorting/artifacting? If so, your error looks identical to mine! Even the end of your error report is the same, so this indicates either our completely-different-systems have the same problem (relatively unlikely) or there's a compatibility fault in the game.
