Mouse Pointer Sticking - Please Help

I searched the forum, but was unable to find an answer to this problem: My mouse pointer always sticks at some point in every game and does not move again. I tab out of the game, and the pointer still sticks in the same position. I can move the mouse, and even though the pointer sticks, you can see icons and such highlighting as the invisive pointer moves over them. This usually occurs within 15 - 20 minutes of gameplay, and I always have to restart the computer.

I have tried disabling mouse hardware, matching the resolution's of the game and desktop, etc. and nothing works. I am SO frustrated that I cannot play this awesome game. If anyone, especially a mod, can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Moderator note: The work around is to use the hardware mouse cursor option.  It seems confined mostly to the Geforce 6600 (or similar) video card and even then, not most of them, only some.  We will keep researching.

What kind of mouse do you have? I'm having a similar issue with the Logitech mx518. I turned off hardware cursor from the video settings, and the problem went away for me.

There have been af ew othe rreports of this and we're trying to narrow this down.

Here are some questions:

1) Is your video card a Geforce 6x series?

2) Are you running dual monitors?

3) If you are running dual monitors, is the game on the primary or secondary monitor?

4) Outside the game, are you runnign the normal windows mouse cursor or a colored one or customized one (CursorXP or other)?

In response to Kormer, I am using a Logitech mouse, although I'm not sure which one. I will see if your advice works.

Again, thanks for the replys.

I feel like the odd man out. Everyone else has logitech mice and 6000 series GFs. . . so why does it (rarely) freeze on my PC?

1) Geforce 6800 go
2) no
3) no
4) normal one

I'm running some tweaked drivers so they run on my Dell Insp 9300. Not overclocked or anything just tweaked so they are working on mobile graphic cards.

Same problem - seems to occur at random intervals of anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours (although generally haven't played longer than that in a sitting). Have to Alt-Tab out and restart the computer to alleviate, which makes it particularly annoying.

1. Geforce 6800 Ultra
2. No
3. N/A
4. Standard cursor
Mouse: MS LaserMouse 6000

Hope that helps you track it down.

I am having the same problem.

1. GeForce 6800 Ultra
2. No
3. --
4. Standard Mouse

My cursor seems to disappear when I double click to lauch a new ship in orbit. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, 9 times out of 10 I am launching a newly constructed ship. I have gone for 20 min to 1+ hrs before having a problem too.

Just to keep everyone updated, the developers have been working on this issue and using the information you've provided. Hang tight - we're working it out.

Indeed, this is very helpful info.  We have several GF 6600/6800s here and keep trying to make it happen without luck.

It doesn't make any sense to us either.

Same happened here :

1) Leadtech GeForce 6600GT with 128 Mb RAM
2) No dual monitor
3) N/A
4) Normal Windows mouse cursor

This only happened one time to me, I never had the problem again since approximatly 15 hours of play (software cursor) ...

If this can help, the only time I had the problem was after 4 different launch of the game without rebooting computer !

I got the problem only in the ship designer.

After well, 10 or 15 minutes playing with modules, deleting some, adding some, revert, ...etc....

The mouse is still active even if the pointer do not move.

By active, I mean that I can click on button or rotate the camera, but without seeing where I'm pointing.

After exiting the game, the mouse pointer remain at the same place but again, I can click on the "start button" and choose "restart" (with a lot of try )

I too switched to hardware mouse and all is well.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer the questions posed by Frogboy. The feedback has helped the developers narrow down the problem quite a bit more.

Same as well, but in my case it starts right when the intro movie starts and stay that way.

1) Geforce FX 5500 256MB
2) One monitor
3) No
4) CursorXP (free) and Microsoft Intellimouse (I have a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0)

PS This happens to me on some other games such as Civ4.

I have found the solution to this! Taken from http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=9572

Use the appropriate steps below for your version of Windows:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP
1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider two notches to the left of Full.

1) BFG 6800 GT Here
2) One Monitor - but note I have a 26" widescreen
3) No
4) Standard Windows Mouse

- disabling the in-game cursor seems to work.

Happened to me just a moment ago, and I was just picking my type of government from the race customization screen, getting ready for a new game.

This is not a GalCiv II specific problem. I, too, have a GeForce 6x00 series card, the 6800GT to be specific. I *had* an ancient Logitech ball mouse that would lock up like this while playing World of Warcraft. The oddity about the lock ups are if I boot my PC from being off and only let what is set in startup run, then kill what I don't want in the background while I play, then go DIRECTLY into WoW, my mouse would be fine. If I so much as *looked* (Well, I really had to run it, but still) at another program before I started WoW, my mouse would lock up in the exact same fashion as everyone is describing happening here. I replaced the mouse with a generic Microsoft Optical mouse, the problem still persists. I've had this type of lock-up ONCE in GalCiv II and it was shortly after a planetary invasion happened. This was prior to my installing the GalCivII theme for windows. Since then I have only played a little more and have had a planetary invasion happen without a subsequent lockup.

I'm not sure if this information helps ya'll any, but definately realize that these mouse lock ups are not specific to GalCiv II, as it appears to be more related to our generation of video card. *shakes fist*

I haven't experienced anything similar with other games. I too have a 6600GT , no dual monitor and no custom mouse. The problem seems to go away if i switch to the hardware mouse but it doesn't look good in the game!
