Mouse Pointer Sticking - Please Help

Mouse Pointer Sticking - Please Help

I searched the forum, but was unable to find an answer to this problem: My mouse pointer always sticks at some point in every game and does not move again. I tab out of the game, and the pointer still sticks in the same position. I can move the mouse, and even though the pointer sticks, you can see icons and such highlighting as the invisive pointer moves over them. This usually occurs within 15 - 20 minutes of gameplay, and I always have to restart the computer.

I have tried disabling mouse hardware, matching the resolution's of the game and desktop, etc. and nothing works. I am SO frustrated that I cannot play this awesome game. If anyone, especially a mod, can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

--

Moderator note: The work around is to use the hardware mouse cursor option.  It seems confined mostly to the Geforce 6600 (or similar) video card and even then, not most of them, only some.  We will keep researching.

Same thing happens here - the pointer gets stuck and XP has to be restarted before functionality returns.

1) Geforce 7800 GT

4) Standard WinXP cursor.

When exiting the game, the following is generated in the log (debug.err) :

I also have this problem - very happy to find such an excellent forum associated with this beautiful game!

I've only been playing for an hour or so and it's happened twice - once in-game (main screen) and once in the ship designer (lots of right-clicking and holding).

My info:

1). GF 6800 (overclocked to GT specs)
2). Single monitor
3). N/A
4). I use 3D mouse pointers in Windows (the gold colored one)

Logitech MX310 6 button mouse
Win2000 Pro

I will go ahead try the hardware mouse option.

Thanks for a wonderful game and great support !

1) GeForce 6600GT
2) yes
3) Primary
4) Default theme of CursorXP

As reported by the others, using the hardware mouse cursor seems to fix it. And for what it is worth, yes, I'm using a Logitech mouse (2 in fact, a PS/2 one and a USB one).

I've never encountered this problem in Civ IV (the only other game I really played the past couple of months).

It is good to find a bug report on this in the forums, and I'm glad you guys are working on it. Given that there is a workaround I'm not too frustrated about this one

What did frustrate me was that there is no (obvious) way to quit the game through the usual keyboard commands. I had to use the Windows kill features to get out of the hanging games.

1) NVidia GF5600Ultra - fw 81.98, winxp
2) no
2) no
4) standard cursor
Mouse: Wacom Tablet :-/

I feel like the odd man out. Everyone else has logitech mice and 6000 series GFs. . . so why does it (rarely) freeze on my PC?

Just curious. I also have a Wacom Tablet. Are you using the stylus or the mouse that came with it? I had nothing but problems with the mouse. Now I just disconnect the tablet unless I'm actually using it for drawing, and use a Labtec mouse. I have a GeForce 6800 GT and never had a problem with the Labtec mouse.

I've found an issue that makes my game a little less enjoyable, and is certainly looking into. If I use the software cursor tool to make the cursor fit the game, my CPU always runs at max, causing sound/video skips at times. When I turn it to hardware, I get the regular windows cursor but without the performance issues. Seeing that a cursor shouldn't take up my entire computer's resources, it appears to be worth looking into.

This would also be a likely cause of everybody else's mouse to freeze/stick ingame.

You can ctrl+s to quicksave current game then alt+F4 to exit into Windows

My mouse cursor is stops moving somewhere on the screen, or the screen itself starts rolling to the left or right, like the mouse button is stuck. Finally, the most frustrating error is when i can't see the cursor any more and I have to guess the buttons to save, exit based on the highlighting over the buttons.

I have a USB mouse, Nvdia 6800 and this only happens in Gal CIv II.

Great game, regardless!!!

I am still waiting for my copy of GC2 but I encountered this problem with other games.
Whenever this happened I could make my mouse visible again by going to controlpanel->mouse and activating the mouse trail. This can be done without using the mouse by simply using keys.
Unfortunelty the frozen Cursor stays on the screen, but the mousepointer is visible again.

I had the same problem:

Geforce 6600GT
No
No
Standard

I managed to get it to disappear by switching to hardware mode (after about two dozen stuck cursors) and when i turned it back later to test, it didn't happen again. (and it hasn't, to this time.)

Hope someone will figure it out.

Howdy,

Meant to reply to the topic about the hardware cursor problem when I saw the main posting. To echo some of the other players this occurs in other games. I saw this start to occur for me after a combination of changes from NVIDIA and Blizzard on WOW. After the 7x series drivers started to come out is when it really got bad.

Now here is the interesting way to ID if it is a similar problem to what happened in WOW. If they can have them bring up task manager and start cmd. (the dos window – command) Now make it full screen, (alt-enter) then type exit on the command prompt and hit enter. The cursor should come back. That workaround got people back up and running in WOW. Long term fix was to turn off either hardware cursor and / or smooth mouse in WOW.

Right now I have not had that occur in a very long time in WOW so hard to say if it was a Blizz or Nvidia issue. (I keep both up to date.) I was using a 6600 at that time and did not have dual monitors. From what I remember on the tech board at the time most of the people who had it occur where on the low end of tech experimentation so did not use beta drivers, multi monitor, or overclock and such.

Hope that helps out.

Thanks,

Daniel

I have started a huge game, and have now begun consistently getting this error. I have a particular save which causes it in no more than five turns. I'm using a 6600GT on a single TFT with a logitech wireless optical mouse.

Any fix for this on the horizon, or will we have to use the workaround indefinately?

I've had the issue just once (knock on wood) it happened while Alt-Tabbing in and out of the game. The other windows I was using were just Internet Explorer windows, IIRC...

1. Card is a 6600GT
2. Single monitor
3. --
4. Default WinXP cursors.

I'm using a Logitech mx510, but not using logitech drivers, using default windows drivers.

Side question: Is there any drawback to using the "hardware cursor" toggle? will performance suffer or?

Interesting, it seems clearly Gforce related (haven't had this problem since the last drivers, but thatw as 2 days ago )

anyway
1 Gforce 6800
2 Single monitor
3 n/a
4 default WinXP stuff
both a generic logitech mouse as with my new *beams* Razor Copperhead

I've had this not only in a wide variety of games, but also when doing a lot in my OS, like unrarring, copying and throwing open a web page or 2.
To me it seemed to start when I removed Azureus from my system but that might be pure speculation and might actually have started when I put in my 6800 (both happened around the same time I think, and the latter seems more likely)

Found this as well: Link

I run into that problem too regularily.
My system specs:
Geforce 6800go
only one monitor (the notebooks internal one)
I am using CursorXP.

Will try hardware-cursor tonight.

Whew. I thought I was going to have to get a different motherboard! (Replaced it and video card at the same time.)

1) Gforce 6800 Ultra
2) Single Monitor
3) N/A
4) Standard cursor.
I haven't used the Wacom Tablet yet - it's what I usually use. I also have only had the issue while in the ship builder, although it only took a few times before I came here, so it might happen elsewhere. It may be related to the size of the ship, faces being rendered or something similar since it happened pretty much instantly when I opened a Huge Altarian hull (nothing placed on it), but it waited until I had placed five or so things on a Cargo hull (the small Yor one) before doing it. I also went up through every Altarian ship from bottom to top without it freezing until I got to the Huge hulls (screenshots for the Wiki, if you must know ).

Hope that was helpful.

I have the same mouse freezing problem with 6800gt and logitech mouse. I have enabled hardware cursor, matched resolution, turned off background apps, latest drivers, and still it freezes up; particularly if I leave it on for a few minutes w/o touchign the mouse. Restart is the only option. Not computer as I run many other high resource programs with no problems, WOW, BF2, Civ IV etc. I have already posted debug information on another thread, so will not repost it here.

It is annoying that this problem has been known for 1 1/2 months and still is not fixed.

Ruins an otherwise good game.

Is anyone having mouse freezes using a PS/2 mouse. Just thinking maybe the Gforce cards might be stuffing the USB port somehow.
Have this too since 1.1 BETA (in both).

Geforce 6800GT (AGP), Logitech MX1000 USB mouse connected to USB 2.0 port.
regular Windows cursors, Windows XP Pro SP2.
Single LCD monitor , Intel Pentium IV 3Ghz HT (800Mhz bus) CPU.

The mouse not not "really gone" it just become invisible - when you move and click you can click stuff. After exiting game it still invisible (and you can still click) while mouse pointer pictogram "sits" somewhere on the screen and wan't move.

Strangly enough disconnecting mouse from USB or disablining and enablening it in device manager does not help - have to reboot.

Aperently the disapearing mouse cursor so many of us expirience is NVIDIA driver bug !!!!

The bug introduce itself in ALL 8x.xx version drivers .

So far 2 temporal solutions exists :

1. Install v7x.xx drivers.

or

2. Right click on desktop, go to "Properties" , "Settings" tab , hit "Advenced" button, "Troublesot" tab there , then change the
"Hardware acceleration" slider from "Full" one step down.
This will prevent problem from happening but will reduce you Windows and most importent gaming performance.
(As a side not if you manage somehow to reach there using keyboard it will restore the cursor even after it disappeared).

More descussions on the issue is here : http://www.techsupportforum.com/other/75719-mouse-pointer-keeps-disappearing.html
and here : http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t9572.html

Thx Lrd Kiron, but i really hope Stardock will fix that problem soon in a patch
I have this problem with GCII and ONLY with this game... so for me we hardly can say it's a proble coming from Nvidia drivers (even if Nvidia drivers are part of the problem).

Again... i don't want to have to install an old driver as to have to set my graphic card performance down for a 1 game bug.

So here are my informations :

1) Gforce A6600GT - AGP

2) No

3) n/a

4) No custom cursor

And as i said before i don't have this problem with any other game as any other software.

Thx
