MOST COMMON REASONS:

a) You're running your desktop in 16-bit color

b) You have ancient video drivers.

Basically I'm the bearer of bad news, if you are running into problems and your video driver is older than a year, you have to get some updated driver.  If you can't get an updated driver, there's nothing we can do. 

The game simply needs to make use of certain features of DirectX 9C that require newer drivers (i.e. within the last year or so).  Older cards should work fine as long as they get updated drivers (I even got my TNT2-Ultra to work).

I just updated my drivers and it still won't launch. The screen goes black and then it goes back to windows

I bought the download only version and the main game downloaded fine but when I try to download the tutorials, movies, or multimedia they download, extract files, get part way through installing, then extract again, get part way through installing, then extract again, etc... ad infinitum.

Not really a problem , but I can't (probably for good reason) run game in windowed or fullscreen mode at any
resolution higher than the current resolution of my desktop. I.E. I'd like to run game at say 1600x1200, but leave my desktop at 1152x864.

A supplement to my submission yesterday. I downloaded my serial number for Galciv2 in Stardock this morning as a check and discovered it was different from the one I was given when I downloaded the software yesterday. So I registered the new serial number and tried again. But I still get a black frozen screen when I hit "play". It may have something to do with my name not being recognized as an existing customer when I downloaded (so I was treated as a new customer), or maybe it has some connection with my changing the resolution.

Game freezes for a while then crashes to desktop. Seems to be related to invading one particular terran planet. I've had it happen both mid-turn and after clicking the turn button.

Problem:
Just upgraded from BETA and game refused to load.
Black screen with the GC2 pointer on it for a few seconds, then poof back to the desktop. Desktop set at 1600x1200, 32bit.

SOLUTION:
Setting WIN desktop to "generic" 1280x1024 32bit allowed GC2 to load. Once loaded, used in-game video controls to set game res. at 1600x1200. Saved and exited. Changed desktop settings back to 1600x1200. GC2 loads and runs just fine now.

Hi,

I could not start a game as i was stuck on the loading screen and i thus tried installing the latest omega drivers. Now i only see half of the game screen on my monitor. Anyone using omega drivers could give me some help?

Okay blanket answer to those who couldn't get the game to run:

1) Some of you have very old drivers -- you even had gotten warning messages on this.  You MUST HAVE RECENT DRIVERS.

2) You may have to switch your desktop to 32bit color if you're running 16-bit.

I have a 32Mb ATI Rage 128 Ultra driver, and i can't locate a driver update anywhere. If anyone can help me locate a driver update it would be greatly appreciated!

My game freezes at somewhat random points. I used to be able to get through a few turns, but now I'm lucky if I can get to a different menu (ie Options, Normal Game, etc.). I tried a variety of different tweaks, such as turning off antialiasing, but they only delayed the freezing. Also, the game freezes in such a way that I'm forced to reboot my computer, rather than just ending GC2 through the task manager.

Forced reboot? That's awful.

We have put together a beta build if you'd like to try it out.  It throttles the frame rate which might be what is causing some of hte problems we've seen reported here.  It sure sounds a lot like overheating.

That worked perfectly I've been playing games for a long time, computer games especially, and I have never seen a level of support like this. Thank you. Were this any other company I would have had to have waited atleast until tomorrow. Oh yeah and the game is radtastic too. Thanks again Frogboy.

I couldn't get the game to load for a couple of days, and it was driving me nuts, but I figured out what was causing my problem, and I think at least a few other people might run into the same problem.

It turned out that the ungodly high resolution that I run on my desktop was causing a problem whne the game tried to initialize, with the default settings.

When I tried to run the game, It would turn the top left quadrant of my monitor black, and I had to close Galciv2 app from the taskbar.
I was running at 2048x1536 resolution on my primary display. I disabled the secondary display and still had the same problem. So finally I thought to try setting my resolution in Windows Display Properites down to 1600x1200 and the game loaded up fine.

It was the only change I made since I last had the game freeze on me, so that was definitely what solved the problem.

Love the game, but was only able to play for about 20 minutes before CTD #1 of 50. Oddly, it worked perfectly for those 20 minutes, and not at all since then! I think it was about turn 15-20 in the first scenario of the campaign. I had read posts on the forum about some people having luck with Omega Nvidia drivers, so I switched to those. At that point, CGII would intermittently initiate, but CTD as soon as it had to display the main galaxy screen (or whatever). I switched back to the latest Nvidia driver and made sure I was running on 1280x768 or better (currently 1280x1024), and YES, in 32bit, and now I don't even get that much anymore... Anyway, any recommendations are much appreciated! Here is the skinny:

Love the game, but was only able to play for about 20 minutes before CTD #1 of 50. Oddly, it worked perfectly for those 20 minutes, and not at all since then! I think it was about turn 15-20 in the first scenario of the campaign. I had read posts on the forum about some people having luck with Omega Nvidia drivers, so I switched to those. At that point, CGII would intermittently initiate, but CTD as soon as it had to display the main galaxy screen (or whatever). I switched back to the latest Nvidia driver and made sure I was running on 1280x768 or better (currently 1280x1024), and YES, in 32bit, and now I don't even get that much anymore... Anyway, any recommendations are much appreciated! Here is the skinny:

Hi,
Please help. Beware I am not tech savvy. Purchased the game but it crashes every time it attempts to load. I have updated the video drivers downloaded the latest directx and set computer for 32 bit colour. Below are the contents of the debug.err file. Thanks.

Hi,
