Here's a report I saw:

Game wouldn't load for them:

This was their debug.err

I have a problem when launching the game. I get a dark screen and the game won't initialize. I checked stickied posts and all my drivers are up to date, but it didn't help

I turn the game on and it loads fine but with half the screen missing. The stardock logo on the splash video is on the far right of my screen. There is not a newer driver out there for my video card. I have a laptop, dx9c and the latest omega driver for my vcard because HP stopped supporting this laptop with drivers. Help, I can run much more graphic intensive games on this laptop that require dx9c without a problem.

Hi,

I just installed GalCiv2 on a Fujitsu C2210 laptop. I had already installed DirectX 9.0c a few weeks ago. On first launch of GalCiv2 I received a warning dialog that DirectX 9.0c or a more recent video driver from the manufacturer was necessary. I checked the driver from Fujitsu and it was the most recent driver already installed. On second launch my screen goes black and doesn't respond. I have to kill the application with Task Manager.

I fixed my problem by disabling anti-aliasing. I am upset with the support though. The devs in the chat room quit responding to me after about 5 minutes. My internet connection was still going strong though as I was surfing here and at omegadrivers to try a redownload of the drivers I already had. So, if your screen is stretched and looks all funny but you have new drivers then disabling anti-aliasing might work. I would also like someone from stardock to email me.

Try it again when you set your display mode to 32-bit.
That's a known issue, and also it says your drivers are from 2002! I'd check ATI's site for an update, not Fujitsu.

Thanks bundles! Going to 32 bit seemed to work. A quick glance at ATI didn't show an update. If I run into further graphics problems I'll look more carefully at the website to make sure I didn't miss anything.

hello, hopefully this is the correct area to post this issue.

The error I get when I try to start the game is "The product appears to be validated but the serial number or the machine SID don't match"

I have ensured the Serial is correct by having the lookup done (Lookup Serial Number in Stardock Central) and copied the serial sent in the email into the registration in stardock central, and in the update serial option on the games splash screen. Do I somehow have a different serial than the game is expecting?

Omega drivers has not updated their NVIDIA drivers for a while (I think that their latest version is 66.93 while NVIDIA is at 81.98). You should check out laptopvideo2go http://www.laptopvideo2go.com. I would stick with the 81.98 drivers since anything higher is a beta driver and they can be a little unstable. You will also need to download the modified .inf file and replace the original one with the modified one before installing the driver. There should be some instructions somewhere on the site. I hope this helps.

Me again.

So I could get to the point of entering in my choices for a new game, but the game itself wouldn't progress beyond the "Loading" screen. At that point I scoured the ATI website for a video driver update appropriate to my hardware and found one, from 2003. Its still old; but, newer than what I had. After installing the new video driver things got worse. Now I cannot get beyond the opening movie. When I hit a key to skip the movie (no matter what length into the movie or letting it follow its course to the end) the application hangs. The screen stays at the last image for about 90 seconds and the sound is like a skipping CD player. Then the PC goes into the blue screen of death. I've tried this with the "debug" command line option and it sometimes goes a little further before crashing (main menu screen showed and then boom, sometimes same behavior as no "debug" option.) I'm attaching the debug.err for the non-debug run. The debug run is about 60K and I can send it on request.

Oh...sorry...forgot to tell you what I was doing. I'd run the program and the menu buttons come up for update game. I click on that and the screen goes away and sits there.

I'm having a similar issue as Eric Wilde; I'll start the game, create a new game, and sometimes get as far as completing a couple of turns before the game crashes and Windows starts generating an error report. I've updated my video card drivers, and if it's helpful here's a link to some of the error files that windows generates.

I am running a Compaq laptop Athlon 1500 1.33 GHz, 340 MB RAM, ATI Mobility w/64 MB video RAM. I have directx 9.0c and the latest driver for my video card (May 2003). I had downloaded just the main part of the game, I could get to the start of a new game but it would crash to the desktop while loading. I downloaded the movies, tutorial, and multimedia folders and NOW the game won't even start. I am getting super frustrated with this and I have NO idea what to do now. Please help!

Eric: I notice two things about your setup. 

First, you have two sound cards. We had a case earlier today where it was using a second sound card whose drivers weren't updated. Removing that second sound card, disabling it, or making sure it's not using it might be good thing to try.

Secondly, you're running Japanese Windows.  Could you try setting it to English (regional settings) just so we can narrow things down?

The issue you're running into is tougher because there's nothing unusual about your setup.  The links you posted were blank pages. 

There is a program called Smart Exception that is located in the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central.  Try installing that, running it and then when the game crashes, it will generate a report that will tell us what line of code it died on.

brigiton, Eric Wilde, Septe (to a lesser extent), and Silentfury23, all your reports are indicating video drivers > 1 year old. That's a problem, as they may well not support DirectX 9.0c.

Silentfury23, it's an ATI chip, is there nothing more recent on ati.com that'll let you update? Same for the rest.

I got a CTD when playing the first mission of the campaign. I tried trading technology for ships with the Altairans. When I hit "Send", that's when it crashed.

Septe, please uninstall and scorch any remanants of older betas. You're on an ancient build. Search for GalCiv2.exe.

Is there any trick to pasting in the entire debug.err log? It's not working, and when I try to edit my first post it still doesn't work.

I have the most updated driver, which was from may 2003. ATI has nothing new, but it's never had a problem with DirectX or any other games. I'm trying to use SmartException, but it won't generate a log of the crash.

I was able to play a custom game just fine. Then I went to play the campaign. I got all the way through setup and it crashed immediately after the intro movie.

I'm having similar problems. I wonder if it's related to ATI, as I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. When I start the game, the screen turns black, I can see the cursor the game uses, then I'm dropped back to my desktop. I'm wondering if it has something to do with playing the intro video. Per instructions posted on this forum earlier, I did update my video drivers, installed the latest DirectX version, etc.

Right now I'm not too concerned, as I'll be getting a new machine in the next couple of weeks that should be more than capable of running this, but it would be nice to play around with it a little before that.

One note, I was playing the beta versions available through TotalGaming.Net (at least until it was pulled off just prior to release). It worked fine for me then.

Here's the Debug report. It does indicate that DirectX 9.0c is loaded and running. Also, my debug report seems a lot shorter than most of the ones posted here. Not sure why.

One addendum to my post, I was running the early versions of this through TotalGaming.Net when it was available. It ran fine for me then.
