DOWNLOAD WOES!

DOWNLOAD WOES!

Downloading problems here.

On Tuesday, February 14th users who were in the BETA program will be able to PRE-LOAD the game via Stardock Central.

On Wednesday, February 15th, all users who pre-ordered directly will be able to PRE-LOAD the game as well.

It requires an updated version of Stardock Central that has been designed to make use of our updated server farm infrastructure. So in theory, your download speeds should be very fast.

Stardock Central 2.29a or later is needed. Go HERE to get it.

However, some % of people are going to have problems.  This thread is to make it easier for them (and us) to figure out what went wrong.

Important points:

1) Don't assume the problem you run into is universal.  So if you run into a problem, please report it.

2) Give as much information as you can.   The log info will be important.

3) There are 3 types of failure:

a) Server Time-Out -- this is where you lost connection to the server. We want to know about this as the new server farm should be able to handle 10X what we are expecting. Don't worry though, Stardock Central supports download resume.

b) User-Validation failure.  This is where the system can't find your information in the database. Is the email address you used to order the same as the email address you used here?   Once your order has been processed (i.e. beta users have already been processed, pre-orders will be processed the end of the day tomorrow) you will receive an email with info.  If you lose this info, go here and put in the email address you think you used to buy the game.

c) Extraction error.  This is where it has downloaded but it fails to properly extract. This should be pretty rare.

We are anticipating a 2% problem level. That is, 2% of users will run into some problem.  That's approximately 100 people from the beta and initial direct pre-order group (we aren't assuming all users will try this out).

So this thread could get pretty busy.  Stay tuned.

We will begin at around 2:30pm EST.

Sorry to add to the mess. I was trying to download the game, and got an installation failed message. The last bit of the log file was this:

Error: Attempt: 1 | Account information invalid
Error: Attempt: 2 | Account information invalid

Not sure what I can do about my account information, but it worked fine when downloading the beta.

I just tried putting Ethereal on the link, but there was nothing even remotely resembling sane data transfer in there, just a bunch of RST messages to 66.28.242.195 (which is the server hosting www.galciv2.com) and the second part of the standard IIS error page.

For those of you who are not seeing GalCiv II in Stardock Central.  If you are on the Chicago server you will either need to update your XML data files or switch to the California or US-4 servers.

To update your XML Data in Stardock Central...
Under the Tools menu select "Settings"
In the Stardock Central Settings dialog under the Settings area select "Internet"|
Now click on the "Refresh XML Data" button.

After SDC finishes with updating your XML Data you should now be able to see GalCiv II.

If you are still unable to see it let me know and I will check your individual accounts to see if there is any issues there.

Have you tried Brad's 2nd link and got stardock send you your serials as the one I recived in the email was different to my beta serial number so I just changed them around that might fix it I think

I had that problem (galciv not showing) but after unistalling and reinstalling the very last version, it downloaded fine (california server). It just completed the full download a few minutes ago. But I guess I'll only know if everything is fine the 21st ...

The lack of information seems to be due to Ethereal not running too well on Windows. The Stardock server seems to return an awful lot of 404's, on which SDC reacts by waiting three seconds and trying again.

Should've bought a better server, eh?

(edit) The chicago server seems to be *much* better.

William.  I tested your account and was not able to reproduce the error with validation that you are receiving.  Please go to https://www.stardock.com/support.asp and enter your email address to have your registration information sent to you.  Then verify that all your registration information in Stardock Central is corrent.  And if  you haven't already try re-installing Stardock Central.

I'm downloading it now, but I'm seeing extremely slow download speeds. It seems to download a file, then wait 3 seconds before downloading the next file. According to the stats the transfer rate is <1 Bytes/sec

What server are you downloading from (Tools/Settings/Internet)?  Have you tried a different server?  Also, we have done some additional updates where the delays shouldn't be happening as frequent now.

FEEDBACK:
I had the problem earlier of only seeing the galciv2 beta files in the
demo section even after downloading the new SDC around 4PM.  Went back out
at ~ 6PM and was prompted to reload the SDC that I had loaded before - restarted
SDC and saw the Galciv2 files back in the purchased section (old TGN #) with the
new files.  Download went great - main files at ~ 850KB, Tutorials started
at ~1900 then @ 25% went to ~ 1500, same for movies and redownload of multimedia
went @ ~ 3000KB.  This is afterhours on a corp LAN.  Using the Chicago
server. 1+ Gig in 1/2 hour

My failure:

The GC2.xml dl appears to work, then the dl goes into waiting 3,2,1 over and over.

Tried both servers; also dl'd new SDC... exactly same problem.

I had that problem on California and 4, on Chicago I had >700kbyte/s.

The download for Stardock Central (linked above) has been refreshed with the build 117 that showed up earlier in the afternoon via auto-update. Fixes a Windows 2000 graphics glitch. I think things are settling down. If you are still experiencing issues tonight, please email [email protected] the log file in question from .\sdcentral\installed and your login.txt from the sdcentral directory. I will sort what I can if possible, or at least be more ready to figure them out tomorrow.

First it wouldn't update and always count to 3 repeatedly... so i deleted the demo (using the uninstall button) and then everything was fine. So if you run into trouble, move the demo folder (if you still want to play) or delete it, maybe it can help you as it did help me.
(The startup screen is gorgeous! Too bad that it shouts "Thou shall not pass")

Okay, where are we at at this point.  Is everyone now settled? If you have any problems, please post below. At this point, we think we have everything nailed down.

I was still getting extremely slow downloads from the California server.  Stopped the download, switched to the US-4 server, now downloading at 160kb/sec.

The only other problems I see are the following:
1. I have build 116, when I restarted the program it did not ask about updating to 117
2. When I restarted it, it started from the beginning again.

Which component were you downloading when it didn't resume?  I think the not resuming thing is a very big deal.

However, if you switched servers then it's probably more understandable.  Could you clarify on that?

Alright just started my download, so far dl speeds are pretty fast. I'm getting 238k a second here.
I don't remember which component it was downloading, other than it was the game
itself and not the supplemental stuff like the tutorials.  This was the
third time I had to restart it, it always restarted back at the beginning.
Ever since I changed servers, it's been going like a bat out of hell, in other
words, extremely fast (250KB/sec up to 350)
The CA server kept retrying (try
to download, then a three second wait, etc). I wonder if it actually downloaded
anything from the CA server. If it didn't because it couldn't get through, then
that would explain the restart problem. Either way, the CA server was no good.

UPDATE

The program was in the middle of downloading the movies. I just stopped the program, then restarted it. I had to manually start the download for the movies again by clicking the "install" button, it started them from the beginning. This is with version 116 of SDC

Okay, I've encountered a problem as well. I can't get the movies to download.

Well I seem to have a problem similar to Citizen William Becker

Installation failed part way through with Account information invalid

I sent an email off for my serial #, then cut and pasted that in sdc
...but the same error comes up

Not sure if I'm missing something silly or what.

It looks like everything installed except the multimedia.

Any other info need...?

I've got a HUGE problem.

My desktop died. My SATA hard drive decided to nuke its NTFS system (no idea how) and has now managed to gain the ability to crash any Windows XP system it touches... (sadly, I BSOD when I try recovery console, hook it up to another computer, put it in an enclosure and try via usb)

Well, here's to hoping I can get it fixed in time! (Spent 12 hours tooling away on it today... hopefully the Linux distro I'm downloading will do the trick)
Penach, that's definitely odd as it looks almost like the server is down but that doesn't make sense as even the backup isn't working then.
I've not recieved a serial number yet, I pre-ordered the CDROM version...
And even though I can't play it till Tuesday... I want it now!!!

Thanks

Although I posted a new post, I will repeat it here just in case. Download of the game familed due to invalid URLs. Sent in the gc2.log to gc2bugs. I tried multiple time to download. All the movies, etc downloaded fine, but not the game.
I keep getting "invalid URL" error over and over and over and over (and OVER)! The download is basically not working at all for me.
