DOWNLOAD WOES!

Downloading problems here.

On Tuesday, February 14th users who were in the BETA program will be able to PRE-LOAD the game via Stardock Central.

On Wednesday, February 15th, all users who pre-ordered directly will be able to PRE-LOAD the game as well.

It requires an updated version of Stardock Central that has been designed to make use of our updated server farm infrastructure. So in theory, your download speeds should be very fast.

Stardock Central 2.29a or later is needed. Go HERE to get it.

However, some % of people are going to have problems.  This thread is to make it easier for them (and us) to figure out what went wrong.

Important points:

1) Don't assume the problem you run into is universal.  So if you run into a problem, please report it.

2) Give as much information as you can.   The log info will be important.

3) There are 3 types of failure:

a) Server Time-Out -- this is where you lost connection to the server. We want to know about this as the new server farm should be able to handle 10X what we are expecting. Don't worry though, Stardock Central supports download resume.

b) User-Validation failure.  This is where the system can't find your information in the database. Is the email address you used to order the same as the email address you used here?   Once your order has been processed (i.e. beta users have already been processed, pre-orders will be processed the end of the day tomorrow) you will receive an email with info.  If you lose this info, go here and put in the email address you think you used to buy the game.

c) Extraction error.  This is where it has downloaded but it fails to properly extract. This should be pretty rare.

We are anticipating a 2% problem level. That is, 2% of users will run into some problem.  That's approximately 100 people from the beta and initial direct pre-order group (we aren't assuming all users will try this out).

So this thread could get pretty busy.  Stay tuned.

We will begin at around 2:30pm EST.

What if you can't find Gal Civs 2 in the games window because no matter how hard I try it seems to have just dissappeared

Pre-download of the base files was fast and worked fine for me using the California server. Trying to download Tutorials, Movies and Multimedia though results in Stardock Central constantly retrying to get the files, but doesn't seem to work.

I have been enyoying the Beta 5 release while I wait for the final release.
If I download these files won't I go from a playable Beta 5 to an unplayable final release (awaiting the critical EXE and DLLs not released until Feb. 21)?
Do I need to uninstall the Beta 5 before installing the final release?

Tutorials are downloaded now, can't tell about the two others yet.

It was told by Stardock that you can move or copy the Beta to a different folder and then continue playing with it.
I prefer waiting for the real thing though!

Answering Post #2, had similar issue for a brief sec. Try following Brad's link and download the latest version of SDC. Restart the comp. Have stardock send you your serials, the other link. Put in serials under register product. Voila. worked for me.

It appears that I made an incorrect assumption. I have a TotalGaming subscription, which gave me access to GalCiv 2 Beta. I did some testing and made a few posts, but nothing spectacular by way of game testing -- not a whole lot of time to play.

However, I thought the TotalGaming subscription was adequate to gain access to this pre-loading.

I downloaded SDC 2.29a as directed. I thought I was following directions with validating my TotalGaming serial number, but GalCiv 2 is not available to me now, at least in the regular games list.

So I went to the product registration screen, select Galactic Civilzations II in the product window, I put in the TG serial number and receive the message that the number is invalid.

I did not pre-order because I did not think I had to pre-order. What do I do now? If I have to wait to buy the game out-right, that is fine with me. I enjoy Stardock enough to support the company. But I may not be the only one confused about subscriptions and pre-orders, so please explain if possible. Thanks!

I also get the message update the GC2 Multimedia whenever I log onto Stardock Central, but that update fails due to invalid serial number. I do have the correct e-mail with my subscription to Total Gaming.

I have to add that I can't see Galactic Civ 2 either, even though I have an active dargin.net/totalgaming.net subscription and that I bought a large booster pack recently. is the latest version of stardock central bugged so that only certain subscription holders can see the pre-load etc?

I'm downloading it now, but I'm seeing extremely slow download speeds.  It seems to download a file, then wait 3 seconds before downloading the next file.  According to the stats the transfer rate is <1 Bytes/sec

Glad to help out Therjw. Mine was doing the same before I did those steps.

@One-eye have you tried getting serials from Stardock (second link Brad posted) ?? I'll post this quote from another thread discussing same problem - this should help.

1. I d/l the Stardock central version from the link given by Frogboy and installed.
2. I got an email from support with my codes
3. I verified I still had the right codes in "registration info" (I had)
4. For GalCiv2 I had no code as I had not ordered it separately as it is meant to be a bonus for old games subscribers (before tokens)
5. I had the bright idea to press "update" in the registration info panel when displaying my games subscription and
6. Now GalCiv2 is one the list

I've got it working as well - it seems as though you need to install the download from the Galactciv 2 website THEN you use your registration code and update it in the subscription panel.

That should solve most things hopefully.

I can't get Gal civ 2 to come up on the games list. I updated registration. I used my serial number and selected gal civ 2 in the drop down and hit register. It still did not come up in the list. It seems like I am missing something.

One Eye
I was in the same situation. After uninstalling and reinstalling following these 6 steps (#14) it worked for me

I went out of SDC and back in and there was another update. I updated and the game came up.

Hmm... I am still in SDCentral 2.24a[b].182, build 113, but I do see GC II in the list of downloadable software.

Will try and update SDCentral to 2.29 anyhow.

The 1.0.x version doesn't show up in the list here, but actively checking for application updates in the Tools menu does find something.

Downloading it seems to be rather painful though, it tries one or two very small files, then waits three seconds (that time would be enough to transfer about 1.5MB), and then tries again.

Oh teh noes, at the current rate I'm looking at over 3.5 years of download goodness.

Thanks for all the advice given above. Though I updated SDC through Stardock Central the first time, something did not happen correctly even if I had 2.29a.374.

Not giving up, I just followed "therjw" and "Supreme Shogun" advice and re-installed SDC from Brad's link -- beginning of this thread.

Now all four items of GC2 are in the games window, so I was able to select all the items for download, which is going on now. Did not need to enter serial number yet, so I hope at the end it will accept the TotalGaming subscription Number.

So, anyone still having problems, don't do what I did! Start at the beginning and assume nothing!

And since the edit button takes me to a lovely "0":

I sincerely wanted to put off the whining to a later date, but after cancelling the download (after about 10 minutes, still at 0%) and restarting it, it restarted at the first file. I see some serious potential for improvement in SDC.

I couldn't get the resume function to work properly either. But after a few kinks it has been downloading it at very fast pace (20-50 kb/s for the main program, and now around 300kb/s for the others - it's installing the 551Mo movies file now).

So far so good.

PS: a few minutes ago I had a window telling me there was a new sdc version available (apparently very recent since mine was installed 1h ago).

I had the same issue as Citizen One-Eye . The auto-update in SDC doesn't appear to be functioning correctly. So if you had a TGN subscription and are having errors when trying to update, go to Brad's link and install/update SDC from there. I did, and no more errors! It's now downloading the new files properly.

Got a window telling me a new version of sdc was available.  I loaded it, then restarted it.  This interrupted the GC II download, when I restarted it it seemed to start at the beginning again.  The auto-resume functionality is not there.
