Masochists wanted: GalCiv preloading this week.

This week the stress test..

According to the universal code of PC game launches game developers must ensure:

All games, products, and or services that are distributed or rely on a digital/on-line component (e.g. the "Internet") must have a disastrous first few days of availability to ensure that the entire release is tainted.

The level of disaster and general failure of said service must be inversely proportional to the amount of time, effort, and testing that went in to trying to avoid the mandatory fate.

However, the rules do not specify WHEN this disaster must occur.  So there's some wiggle room.  So rather than having the "disaster" and "nightmare" be on Galactic Civilizations II's release date we would like to move it back to be a week BEFORE the release.

Specifically, what we want to do is allow users who pre-ordered it to be able to download the bulk of the game (everything basically but the EXEs and key DLLs).  That way, it'll be the same effect as you'd get on release date -- thousands and thousands of people trying to get the same files at the same time from around the world but still allowing us to keep the retailers from being upset at actually releasing the game before it's available there.

And in this way, all the horrible problems that seem to always happen on these kinds of things can be dealt with before the actual release.  In theory, it should work fine.  But my friends at other game companies have told me the same thing -- they were sure they had made sure everything would be fine and then it was still a cluster..

Stardock will provide the appropriate threads to respond in. We will title them with names like:

"Stardock sucks!"

"Where's my *^%& game?"

"MORE server woes! Hello, Stardock?!"

"Why I will never buy another product from this lame company again"

"Didn't they test this thing?"

By fulfilling the letter of the on-line release policy even if not the spirit, we can hopefully make February 21st much easier.

It's the ultimate christmas eve! All the presents are under the tree, nicely wrapped, and we're not allowed to play with all those new toys.

Let's see what comes first: release day or the first mod. Bonus points will be awarded for a total conversion. (TC makers will be granted an additional two days after release to make it run.)

There are already mods, just nowhere to put them...

Frogboy, I love you. Even when I disagree with a decision Stardock makes, I respect the fact that you are always so up front about the whole thing. Kudos to you and everyone on the production team. You have my heartfelt sympathy for the disaster that release always is; hopefully a few good words will help to keep you and the team sane.

I just hope Stardock is the one to release the official, "crack the game to play it early" trojan, so that we can have hundreds of people asking "why doesn't my game work - yes of course I bought the game" questions before Feb 21.

I can't wait, I can't wait.... Gimme that thing!

Oh well, was hoping to be able to play the game on the morning of the 21st, but at least I won't be DL'ing for hours that day.

Hopefully the files will be up by Fri.Night this week so I can DL the stuff while I am working 12 hrs...

Man, I sure wish they had something like this in the World of Warcraft forum.

sounds like a good idea, Valve did this with their games lately and its worked well for them. Stardock Central is basically like their Steam.

Man, I sure wish they had something like this in the World of Warcraft forum.

What do you expect, its blizzard. Their service department and customer relations is non existant.

Plus they nerf all the wrong classes, like warriors, and leave shamans dominate. They have no idea on how to run a mmorpg, lol. I'm surprised so many people play that. I guess its because all the others are exactly the same if not worse. Which is why I hate those games.

it takes 5 minutes to learn to play WoW thats how many people got into it
that and blizzard already has a quite big ego

lots of good games dont get a lot of attention because their creators are not famous'
just like with a lie, the people rather believe the lie of a leader then that of a madman
but i am being a litle hard to understand now

goodnight everything

What they did have, however, was a stress test. Didn't seem to help their release day much, but I've got faith in Stardock.

For those of us who pre-ordered the boxed version of the game (directly from SD)...

When are we supposed to receive our temporary serials ?
Because if you should receive it soon after placing your order... my order didn't get through.

Do you have ANY IDEA what this is going to do to us??

We are essentially going to work through all the log-jams and bugs and eventually have the game in our hands (OK our computers), but it WON"T WORK!!!

This is going to drive me NUTS!

Chris.

BAHAHAHAHA! This is why I love buying a game from a company that is run by a gamer. Clearly Frogboy has been on both sides of game releases (as consumer as well as developer) many times before. I can't wait to actually see people create posts with variations on these titles -- you just know they will.

LOL

This website is such a breath of fresh air compared to other "suit" companies!

You kill me Brad.

Thanks.

Brad Wardell is, hands down, the coolest game developer of all time. I dont think I need to support this statement

Stardock Central is basically like their Steam.

Argh! Please don't compare SDC with Steam - I hate Steam and it was the sole reason I didn't buy HL2. Online Verification to play the offline part??? No way I ever submit to these practices.

Thats what I like about StarDock - they don't hassle you with copy protection instead they reward customers with extra content. Way to go!

And back to topic: Frogboy your post was hillarious! I will provide the occasional "It works for me" and "Modem users are whiners" comments for the mentioned threads.

I'll be downloading it about 120 miles west down I-94.

I jump on I-94 on my way home from SD. ahh 94.. So, I guess I'll be downloading it about 5 miles west of I-94 & 14 miles north of I-696

Don't you mean jostle and/or bump along on I-94... there are potholes big enough to swallow an 18-wheelers tires on 696

I696 and I 94???

Is stardock located in Detroit? I thought all the game developers were in California not here freezing their butts off with us detroiters.

Great news as always. Thanks Frogboy and SD.

Time to call in sick on the 21st. Oh.. well maybe wait until that morning..

Stardock Cebntral like Steam?? Bullcrap. It's far better tha Steam. Steam essentially takes over your whole computer.
And if they make a mistake in their software download your screwed. I had bought an ATI 96600XT and was entitled to
Half-Life 2 and from beignning to end it was a nightmare. I finally removed Steam from my system and forgot about Half-Life/2.
