Masochists wanted: GalCiv preloading this week.

Masochists wanted: GalCiv preloading this week.

This week the stress test..

According to the universal code of PC game launches game developers must ensure:

All games, products, and or services that are distributed or rely on a digital/on-line component (e.g. the "Internet") must have a disastrous first few days of availability to ensure that the entire release is tainted.

The level of disaster and general failure of said service must be inversely proportional to the amount of time, effort, and testing that went in to trying to avoid the mandatory fate.

However, the rules do not specify WHEN this disaster must occur.  So there's some wiggle room.  So rather than having the "disaster" and "nightmare" be on Galactic Civilizations II's release date we would like to move it back to be a week BEFORE the release.

Specifically, what we want to do is allow users who pre-ordered it to be able to download the bulk of the game (everything basically but the EXEs and key DLLs).  That way, it'll be the same effect as you'd get on release date -- thousands and thousands of people trying to get the same files at the same time from around the world but still allowing us to keep the retailers from being upset at actually releasing the game before it's available there.

And in this way, all the horrible problems that seem to always happen on these kinds of things can be dealt with before the actual release.  In theory, it should work fine.  But my friends at other game companies have told me the same thing -- they were sure they had made sure everything would be fine and then it was still a cluster..

Stardock will provide the appropriate threads to respond in. We will title them with names like:

"Stardock sucks!"

"Where's my *^%& game?"

"MORE server woes! Hello, Stardock?!"

"Why I will never buy another product from this lame company again"

"Didn't they test this thing?"

By fulfilling the letter of the on-line release policy even if not the spirit, we can hopefully make February 21st much easier.

Frogboy your post was hillarious! I will provide the occasional "It works for me" and "Modem users are whiners" comments for the mentioned threads. -DocDVD

Dude everyone uses a modem to connect.

I696 and I 94???

Is stardock located in Detroit? I thought all the game developers were in California not here freezing their butts off with us detroiters.

Literally right up the road from Grandmas house. No kidding, yes they are in or may as well be in Detroit. Motor City of the world, speed limit optional, pot holes mandatory.

Ok, essentially right - but "analogue dial-up 56kBit modem users" is to much to write... *lol

Postulate to Murphies law:
Murphy was an optimist.

I always knew this as Brian's Collorary to Murphy's law
Better polish up the old fiber-optic lines & tune those multiplexers - that withdrawing tide of traffic is the sign of 'something this way coming'

I jump on I-94 on my way home from SD. ahh 94.. So, I guess I'll be downloading it about 5 miles west of I-94 & 14 miles north of I-696

I'll download it one mile south of 96 and one mile west of Telegraph.

And... I need to get the suspension on my car fixed - on too many potholes

Well at least you guys and gals @ Stardock know whats expected of ye on the magic day. *grins* I'm optimistic due to already being a Stardock fan.

Regards to comments about being both a developer and a gamer, I can see that.. but I can also imagine its coming from experience with earlier games too. Despite all its success, I am sure there are those that flamed GC on its release and those who flame SDC. Even though it may be hugely popular, sell lots of copies and be regarded as a success. The aforementioned threads provided by Stardock will get some posts I'm afraid. You can't please everyone.

However there are a few threads Stardock should provide also:

"Hot D@mn! I love this game !! "

"Stardock friggin rulez"

"MOO? Are you kidding me? This is waay better. Don't even bother asking for a comparison. "

"Most humorous moment in GC 2"

"Why I will pre-order the next game from Stardock "

"When is the expansion coming out? " (Everyone always asks. )

This will indeed accomodate some loyal fanboys and fangirls so you don't have an all troll forum

Don't forget

"The AI pwns me!!! It has to be cheating!"

or

"What are the cheat codes?"

With regard to the thread title: I didn't realise that the Maso difficulty level in GalCiv 2 even started before you got the game!

Because nobody answered my question... I'm going to repeat it.
Please forgive my uncertainty.

For those of us who pre-ordered the boxed version of the game (directly from SD)...

When are we supposed to receive our temporary serials ?
Because if you should receive it soon after placing your order... my order didn't get through.

You should get your temporary serial #'s on Wednesday.

I love Stardock. I'll continue spending my money here for this kind of "real people" attitude that the Stardock people show. The interaction with the end users on these forums is just amazing. I love a company that is willing to TALK with everyone!

*sigh* I'm becoming a fanboi.

You'd think Stardock had cured cancer to read all this fawning.

The game won't be perfect and all you drones are going to do is stamp on any legitimate criticism and drown it out with your mindless praise. Is that what made America great?

Thx Brad

@ Frightlever : What made you so hostile ?
Both the Stardockians and regular forumers here are very open-minded imho.

lol you guys are evil who live close to SD I live over by US131 way out in BFE slow downloads from home. but when I bring my laptop here to work weee a DS3 is at my finger tips.

but hey it's good to have good game programers here in Michigan to show those west coast posers how it's done lol

Now once the game is out, I say a week after the SDC servers start smoking from use, those of us who live close should bring a case o beer to the programmers.

North or south of 94? I used to spend all my summers out in Jones (Just a wee bit off of 131).

Whoa, who said we were all gonna be about mindless praise? I was only displaying my approval for the open nature of the development team. I've loved the beta releases I have been able to play. Perfect? Uh... nothing is perfect. I know GalCiv 2 will have flaws. I think we all know that... but what's wrong with being enthusiastic about a somewhat rare trait in the development team? And why be angry because we enjoy the game (at least the beta)?

Whew, hostility sucks!

Anyway, if the game is even remotely like the beta, I already know it will be a lot of fun. I'm not looking for a flawless game, never have been. I'm just looking for a fun game. And I would rather support this open company than a non-involved company.

Sorry for the rants! I hope I don't sound hostile

Benjamin Low -- I'm north of Grand Rapids & south of Big Rapids

Shall -- my praise is about a good game & the beer is a bribe to get native 64bit support lol.

But for now I'm chomping at the bit waiting for my serial/cds so I can play more
