Brad's known issue list

A look in the sausage factory..

Ever buy games where the developer pretends a given problem with their game doesn't exist?

Wish they'd just admit to a problem and fix it? Well here's our list of problems that we've encountered and some of them are going to sound pretty obscure but if they affect you, better to know.  We plan to address these by release:

Item #1: Windows 2000 on Non-English versions.  There is texture corruption on non-English versions of Windows 2000.  It works fine on Windows XP and Windows 98 all languages, just Windows 2000.  We expect to have this updated by release.  If anyone here has a non-english version of Windows 2000 as their main machine let us know.

Item #2: The video tutorials stutter. Click the "view full screen" option. This option isn't in the retail release but is in the digital release and subsequent updates.

Item #3: If you're running in 16-bit color, you need to switch to 32-bit color in some cases or the game will simply fail to launch (or launch with an error and die).

Item #4: On Some nVidia cards, if the game isn't running on your primary monitor, the mouse cursor may get flakey.

Item #5: It takes a LONNNG time to get back into the game after alt-tabbing away. This has to do with a trick we used to keep memory use down. The game isn't crashed but it can take awhile to get back. If you're going to be switchign around, run the game in a window (see the video options screen).

Item #4: TNT and Geforce 1/2 users (technically not supported but they do work) will not get lighting on planets.

Item #5: On Windows 98, if the system has less than 20% resources left, there may be problems with late game performance (frame rate).

Item #6: If you are using an older nVidia card and running your system in 16bit color, the game may not launch. You will need to set your desktop color depth to 32bit. Nothing we can do on this, some older cards don't support DirectX 9 video depth switching.

Item #7. You need to be running your system at 1024x768 or better. That means 1280x600 won't work both X and Y needs to be equal or better.  1600x1200 is fine. 1280x1024 is fine.  4000x3000 is fine.  This should only affect certain older laptops.

Item #8. Certain CRT older (non PnP) monitors may need to tweak the brightest and contrast settings of the game to their liking. The defaults were set to PNP CRT / LCD norms.

Item #9. You can run the game in a window from the options are or by running the game from a command prompt galciv2 w

Item #10. You can turn on cheat mode by running the game with a "cheat" parameter (i.e. galciv2 cheat)

Item #11. We have not tested the game on non-Indo European languages yet.  That means we don't know how it runs in Mandarin, Hebrew, or other languages.  We plan to look at those OSes in the future but our access to those kinds of systems is limited. It might work fine, we just haven't been able to try it.

Item #12. One of the weapons thumbnails in the ship design screen is missing if you run at a very high resolution on certian versions of ATI video drivers.  We have fixed this internally already.  Most people will likely never see it anyway since it is a very very high tech (we were able to find it through cheat codes).

That's all for now.  We'll keep updating this.  Hopefully we haven't scared anyone off.  We have found from our non-game software that the best policy is to treat customers as partners.

Most of these issues won't affect anyone (they certainly didn't come up during the beta and there were thousands of people in that).  But they will likely affect someone and we want to make sure they're taken care of.

Sorry to post off-topic here Brad. But I had sent in an issue of "excessive activations" your server will not activate the last beta for me. I had already deleted the older versions from archives. I sent this issue with the activation log file to support well over a week a go and no one has answered my problem other than the automated acknowlwdgmwnt response. I would like to use the beta until release date. Can you ask someone to send me a solution for my problem.
I had the game on 2 partitions and had all sorts of problems with your servers which caused me going over the arbitrary limit of activations. Thank you.

You can't download the beta anymore.  However, drop a note to [email protected] they can help.

Well, i do have a non-english Windows 2000 (a french one). Interested ?

This is a refreshing bit of honesty. The entire post deserves to be commented on by certain web sites and blogs that make it a habit of taking game publishers to task for releasing buggy crap and blowing off user complaints. Sure they like shooting fish in a barrel, but will they give credit where credit is due?

Probably not. As we all know, good news doesn't sell papers.

Kudos to Stardock. Well done.

That's a bug ?

I guess that means 1920 x 1200 is fine, isn't it?

These bugs/issues are nothing compared to the crap that's been released by other companies! Kudos to you and your team, Brad.

Yeah, he is saying that you screen width must be 1024 or greater, and height must be 768 or greater. I have seen old laptops with screens that run at 1280x600 for some bizarre reason, so those would not be able to run the game.

Kudos to Stardock for honesty and for an extremely high-touch customer service policy.

Is there any documentation available on performance settings yet? I think listing the performance setting tweaks that you can do would help answer a lot of questions.

About item #1:
I also have a WIN2K version in Italian and it doesn't work.

Very interested in testing the fix.

I too have to throw a large kudos to Stardock and all the beta testers involved in this project. I have been involved in only one other beta that the Devs and beta group have duplicated the effort and qaulity that Stardock has shown.

An issue with the manual in the pre-release version:

The table with galaxy sizes on page 9 is a bitmap, complete with Cleartype convergence error.

There is a typographical error under Trade when choosing your starting abilities as a Terran.

This is how it reads now: "By improving your Trade Ability, the about of money you receive..."

This is how it should read: "By improving your Trade Ability, the amount of money you receive..."

I know it's nit-picky but I worked two years as a QA Tester/Project Lead and I can't stop!!!

Hi everyone,

The first time I designed a ship, I clicked 'Save' and nothing happened. I then clicked 'Done' and looked for my ship in the options to build, but it wasn't there. I returned to the main view and noticed the little dialog with the ship name and description. I filled in a description and clicked 'OK'. The game then froze and I had to reset. I checked the error log and found this line four times at the bottom:

Debug Message: Error. String Not Found. Table: SDesignWnd String Name: NoFilter

I'm guessing there's one line for each time I clicked 'Save' on the ship design screen.

Hope this helps!

I'm glad to see you're taking bug reports from your customers seriously. That's very refreshing.

How do I get on an official bug list so that I can get a response from tech support? Some initial inquiries here on these forums did help my first problem; but, other problems still prevent me from successfully launching the game. See my comments and debug.err in the STICKY forum Getting the Game Running.

Thanks

Current issues I have.

Middle click for rotation not consistant. Rotation reverses. I prefer ship customization rotation...move mouse left ship moves left. But in the game rotating ships in preview windows (ie enemy ships) goes the reverse way.

Upgrading sticky...hard to explain and duplicate. Somtimes when I chose a custom design and choose upgrade in the ship designing, the old/current ship comes up. I choose to remove an engine...no problem, choose to remove a second part the design resets. Other times I can strip the design down more than one step and build new parts and save under the current design name no problem (not getting into the Mark I's IV's etc yet)

Couple the hardpoints on mostly the tiny hulls facing wrong way and spotted one on a Alt.?? cargo hull in the back.

Build que's not easy to get a grasp on for ships. There seems like there are 4+ menu's / command paths to choose what ship is to be build next. Again hard to duplicate because it's hard to know what is supposed to work....do I double click and click done...go back to planet...clear the current ship THEN click the change. Sometimes it seems like I said go back to planet...the ship I wanted it to change to didn't que, I exited the planet screen and lowe there it was in the build que on the main map summary....not sure if I saw it wrong at the planet menu or someone slipped me a mickey...

Planet social projects sticking to 0 and eventually dropping into the negative building times. Seems to consistantly happen when buying an already being build social project and then keeping the planet overview screen open while pressing next turn. Also the planet overview screen let's me buy several social projects at once whilst the planet only let's me buy the current one.

I'll try and capture some screenshots and a fraps movie to show it.

On destroying the enemies/ or them destroying my mining operations the resource although showing on the map no longer is showing up as useable. This was solved by my reloading the game after the incidence so it looks like it just needed to be remapped or something.

same as celtic nation this succeed too when a race surrender to other the resources become unavailable to constructors until reload

Here's my short list of mystery bugs and issues. I played a metaverse game (though apparently I botched getting the score uploaded), Begginer level, Medium size universe, 9 races, I played stock Thalans. (game ran from about 7pm to 3:30am... god... it's been years since I lost track of time that badly! Good job!)

1. I too am getting the "They blew up my resource mining starbase and now when I try to build a new starbase on that resource, the game acts like it's not there any more" bug. (Did not try to save and re-load to correct issue.

2. I'm clicking on ships and fleets and/or fleet remnants (fleets that lost one or more ships but are still fleets), and it's refusing to combine them up to my full point total (i.e. a 5 point ship and a 10 point fleet, my cap is 20, but they won't combine into a 15 point fleet)

2.1 Clicking on two ships that have come from different locations, but have been moved onto the same spot, will not combine into a fleet. Instead, I get a new fleet with no image on the list of ships/fleets in the window below, and has a point total of zero. Repeated clicking just generates more of these zero point fleets.

2.2 When dealing on a tile with multiple ships and/or ships and fleets, you cannot click on a fleet icon and disband that fleet without moving it into a separate spot on the map first, and then moving the individual ships back into the stacked ships spot.

2.2.1 When you are on a tile with multiple ships and/or ships and fleets, you cannot get a breakdown of the individual ships in a particular fleet until you move the fleet into a spot where it's the only ship/group of ships on the tile.

3. Only saw this once, and I didn't pay close enough attention to it to be absolutely sure, but I won a close invasion battle on an enemy held planet, won it (with very few troops left), but did not capture the planet.

4. I am experiencing the "removed components come back when you click on a second component to remove" bug when upgrading an existing ship design.

5. Not sure if this is a bug, but somewhere along the mass driver tech tree, I found myself able to select nano-ripper guns. Later in the game, they vanished. (I *think* this may have occurred after I lost a planet I had invaded.. I'm guessing nano-rippers might be something like that unique ship armor building you can create early on?). When I retook the planet, I did not recover the nano-ripper build item for any new designs, but I could still build old designs that had the rippers in them. Shouldn't I still be able to build nano-ripper equipped ships even if they're a building based item? (Otherwise, how am I able to continue to build the old designs with nano-rippers in them?) I would expect if the rippers are building based to either be able to continue building them once the tech has been added to my build options, or, any designs that use rippers would become unbuildable until the building was restored. (Though I'm not sure how that would work if it's a unique building that can't be built by others once someone else built it)

6. Alt-tabbing out of full screen mode sometimes comes back, sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't, if I hit esc a few times to get to the options screen, I can usually get the video to come back, and can continue playing.

7. Annoying AI sour grapes surrenders. (I don't know if this qualifies as a bug). 4 of 5 races that I conquered waited till I was surrounding their last planet, and then surrendered to one of the other races I was not at war with. I can see that happening occasionally, if they were allied with that race, but, it just annoyed me that I had to either leave a now foreign controlled planet in the heart of my territory, or extend the warfare to yet another race to get the planet I was after.

8. A.I. Allies make peace with me the same turn they declared war on me due to treaty obligations. I'm thinking you need to set a minimum number of turns or something before the allies will negotiate separate peace with me. I had 2 races I had good relations with, but they declared war on me after I attacked their ally, but as soon as I talked to them and offered them a straight up peace treaty that turn, presto, it was all kosher. That seems to make mutual defens/alliance treaties about worthless for the AI to make, doesn't it?

9. Precursor vessels seem to be occuring a bit too frequently? I found 2 ranger class vessels on my homeworld, the terrans found a ranger, and the Korx had *9* precursor corvettes defending the same planet. Seemed like that was an awful lot of precursor tech to be floating around intact on people's homeworlds. I am guessing that the precursor big ships are really supposed to be rare occurances to give a race a boost when it's needing a little extra oomph. (A suggestion: Give the option to dismantle the ship for one or more technological advancements due to reverse engineering. one Ranger *is* pretty spiffy, but salvaging a new weapon system, defense system, or specialty pod that could then be put into production would be really cool too, and more reasonable than finding an intact, spaceworthy vessel buried on your planet after how many hundreds of thousands of years? (just a suggestion))

As I'm still a bit tired from playing, those're all I can clearly remember. The fleet management ones were most frustrating, since I couldn't combine fleets and had a lot of single ship battles that I didn't want to have. I could never tell when a group of ships would or would not combine properly, and having to make them move off the stack square to review/inspect/or ungroup/re-organize my fleets was not good.

*** Remembered a few more as my sleep deprived brain got some caffine in it***

10. I gave ships to an allied minor race, as they were in a life or death struggle with the current leader on the map. The AI, while grateful for the ships, left about half of them just sitting there, and never used them in any way. I don't think it was a range issue, as there were some ships that the AI started using right away.

11. Later in the game, when I conquered the race that my ally was fighting with, as I took the last planet they had, I got a message, if I remember correctly, that my buddy had literally stolen the complete tech tree of this race I just beat up, and they would be willing to share with me some/all of the stolen tech, but they wanted items, and specificly wanted planets. I gave them a planet, but never got tech's in return from them. Did I miss the boat here on how to take advantage of this technology windfall?

the only other thing I can think of atm, is that in both games I tried, my starting solar system seemed to be the only one that didn't have two habitable worlds in it. Pretty much all the other races started in 2 habitable planet systems, although some of them only had class 4-6 as their second world. I had to make a mad dash out into their space to latch onto any planet I could, just to get a second world going. Dunno if that is by design or not.

FYI: Odd bug

I ran into an interesting effect when I accidentally "upgraded'" a class of non-core freighters into constructor variants.

My trade didn't seem to stop, and I had tiny constructors running around that I couldn't select.

Item #2: The video tutorials (yes, the game has in-game video tutorials) stutter on some (but not all) older video cards. This is due to alpha blending. You can turn off anti-aliasing but that may not fully solve it. We plan to have this dealt with by release day.

The videos were stuttering on my nVidia GeForce FX 5200 with anti-aliasing 4X; dropping down to anti-aliasing 3X fixed the problem!

I had traded a defender to the Alatarians, the only defender I had,and it was currently set to going to a fleet waypoint. It went to the waypoint and stayed there and never went under Altarian control.
