Brad's known issue list

A look in the sausage factory..

Ever buy games where the developer pretends a given problem with their game doesn't exist?

Wish they'd just admit to a problem and fix it? Well here's our list of problems that we've encountered and some of them are going to sound pretty obscure but if they affect you, better to know.  We plan to address these by release:

Item #1: Windows 2000 on Non-English versions.  There is texture corruption on non-English versions of Windows 2000.  It works fine on Windows XP and Windows 98 all languages, just Windows 2000.  We expect to have this updated by release.  If anyone here has a non-english version of Windows 2000 as their main machine let us know.

Item #2: The video tutorials stutter. Click the "view full screen" option. This option isn't in the retail release but is in the digital release and subsequent updates.

Item #3: If you're running in 16-bit color, you need to switch to 32-bit color in some cases or the game will simply fail to launch (or launch with an error and die).

Item #4: On Some nVidia cards, if the game isn't running on your primary monitor, the mouse cursor may get flakey.

Item #5: It takes a LONNNG time to get back into the game after alt-tabbing away. This has to do with a trick we used to keep memory use down. The game isn't crashed but it can take awhile to get back. If you're going to be switchign around, run the game in a window (see the video options screen).

Item #4: TNT and Geforce 1/2 users (technically not supported but they do work) will not get lighting on planets.

Item #5: On Windows 98, if the system has less than 20% resources left, there may be problems with late game performance (frame rate).

Item #6: If you are using an older nVidia card and running your system in 16bit color, the game may not launch. You will need to set your desktop color depth to 32bit. Nothing we can do on this, some older cards don't support DirectX 9 video depth switching.

Item #7. You need to be running your system at 1024x768 or better. That means 1280x600 won't work both X and Y needs to be equal or better.  1600x1200 is fine. 1280x1024 is fine.  4000x3000 is fine.  This should only affect certain older laptops.

Item #8. Certain CRT older (non PnP) monitors may need to tweak the brightest and contrast settings of the game to their liking. The defaults were set to PNP CRT / LCD norms.

Item #9. You can run the game in a window from the options are or by running the game from a command prompt galciv2 w

Item #10. You can turn on cheat mode by running the game with a "cheat" parameter (i.e. galciv2 cheat)

Item #11. We have not tested the game on non-Indo European languages yet.  That means we don't know how it runs in Mandarin, Hebrew, or other languages.  We plan to look at those OSes in the future but our access to those kinds of systems is limited. It might work fine, we just haven't been able to try it.

Item #12. One of the weapons thumbnails in the ship design screen is missing if you run at a very high resolution on certian versions of ATI video drivers.  We have fixed this internally already.  Most people will likely never see it anyway since it is a very very high tech (we were able to find it through cheat codes).

That's all for now.  We'll keep updating this.  Hopefully we haven't scared anyone off.  We have found from our non-game software that the best policy is to treat customers as partners.

Most of these issues won't affect anyone (they certainly didn't come up during the beta and there were thousands of people in that).  But they will likely affect someone and we want to make sure they're taken care of.

The patch didn't touch any of these things.

I suspect there's something else going on there.

It has *nothing* to do with the patch, it was broken from the start, it never ever worked!

I can confirm that Social Production is completely broken after the patch and Research may be bugged as well.

Make a custom race with no bonuses in production or research and start a game. Set taxes to 50 and spending to 100. Output on the homeword for military production, social production and research is 8-7-8 respectively (shouldn't it be 8-8-8?)

Start another game with +50 military production bonus and output is at 12-7-8. This makes sense: 50% of 8 is 4, 4+8=12.

With +50 research bonus it is 8-7-10. Obviously research bonus is giving about half of what is advertised.

With +50 Social bonus it is 8-7-8.

BTW, why do we get +10 bonus to Social and Military production for free (as shown in the civ stats screen) even if we don't chose any bonus ability in those areas?

For your free bonus in military and social, have you cheked if it isn't linked with tech, like planetary imporvements?

The patch didn't touch any of these things.

i have posted the following informations in various threads, but I will summarize here. Basically, the patch didn't broke anything since the behavior was reported before the patch

Since this thread https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=274&AID=94769 (in december), the civ wide social production bonus isn't working. It acts as if the bonus was 0. I have reported it in the beta and in the various gamma. The Thalan are a nice race to check those bonus.

After some tests, I have seen that 50% (1/2) of your research bonus is converted into free researhc (you don't paid for it) and 18% (1/6) in paid research.

Sure, it can be annoying to see that you don't benefit from the all research bonus, but you don't pay an important part of the research given by your empire bonus. It is nice for your budget

The pre-designed ships are strictly worse and more expensive that corresponding user designed ships (with the same technology requirements).

They do not correspond exactly with anytjhing that can be user designed.

It is very awkward to enter the Name of a newly designed ship class. To enter a name, you must click at the begining of "NEW DESIGN". use the right arrow key to move to the end, and backspace to erase it before entering the new name.

Those bonuses are listed under the Stats and Graphs tab on the Civilization Manager screen, so I don't see how they could be anything other than civ-wide bonuses. Just make a custom race like I did. You'll see it there.

Of course, whether or not those unexplained bonuses are actually working is another question....

Sorry, I wasn't clear: "Planetary improvements" is a name of a tech that give you some empire wide bonus

If there is a window open, the escape key still goes to the options screen instead of closing the window.
If you select "Build Ship" from a planet window, select a ship type to build, select the "Back to Planet" button, the build order is lost.

The possible starting races are not "equal" in terms of overall level of ability. By default, each race should have ZERO availa ability points/ There should be an option to set your race to game defaults

Oh, right. No, this is on the first turn of the game, and I don't start with that tech.

Really, why don't you try it yourself if you don't believe me. It takes about 2 minutes.

I have a problem with creating fleets

sometimes it won't work......some ships just wont go together

ex. ship A won't create a fleet with ship B, but they can separately create a fleet with ship C

Galactic Privateer is broken. I built this wonder, only to wonder while I watched my transports get blown up! What gives?

My selection of Bugs

1. Ships and or fleets move even if I selected another ship/fleet (generally the previous selected fleet). This can be avoided by selecting and deselecting a unit in the current fleet.

2. I was making a complicated ship design (A constructor), named it, saved it once to save my progress, then upgraded it to finish my work, keeping the same name. It asked me if I wanted to overwrite the previous design, and i said yes. Now, I have 2 ships of the same class on my build lists, and no matter what I choose, I get the previous design.

That's it for now, later.

Not an in game bug but the PDF game manual contents are wrong. It says fleets are on page 39 and upgrading ships are on page 40 but are actually on pages 40 and 41 respectively. Not sure if there are other misprints since I just found these looking up some information.

Obsolete ship models still appear on the upgrade screen.

Sometimes I receive a message that all my ships are out of range and I can't move them. Restoring a saved game has the same bug. Only stopping and restarting the game works.

If I click on the GNN link to get to a planet (which just contructed something) and then I go to the shp designer from there (the GNN is still open) then try to save your design, you won't get the save design dialoog box, then when you cancel the ship design you will see the save design dialog box and the the game will crash to desktop.

some Ship designs marked obsolete will appear on the ship upgrade screen, and all of them will appear on the right-click build menu on the main map screen.

Upgrade all of this type, and then clicking on the new type will sometimes upgrade a diferent type (eg: saying upgrade all heavy fighters to heavy fighters mk 2 wil sometiems result in all heavy fighters bering upgraded to defenders.

After you add some zero-cost/size items to your spaceship designs (like a wing) if you try to delete them immediately afterward the system tells you that they have other items things attached to them and won't let you remove them so you have to scrap your whole design.

Standard ship designs cannot be upgraded even though it just makes a copy of your existing design, and you have to build a constructor mark 2 for example from scratch

Do not seem to be able to access the upgrade menu for ships stacked together or for ships in orbit

Sometimes the right-left key 4 and 6 causes zooming in and out of the map instead of just moving the ship

if you try to move a ship on autopilot with the keyboard, it doesn't work instead it moves along its autopilot path

there is no keyboard command to move all auto-pilot ships so you always lose a turn on those

New bug: When signing into the metaverse, hitting the tab key does not take me from the name field to the password field. Annoying, but not exactly a game breaker.

Currently running latest patch (1.0D.008 IIRC) and have encountered the following bugs:

1) When you conquer a new planet with a transport that was on auto-move it dumps you into the planet screen. If you leave the planet screen at any time (say to go to the Shipayrd or Planetary Details screen) the computer AIs continue to move while you can't see the galaxy map. This has been around since Beta, just a minor annoyance rather than anything critical.

2) I have not been able to consistantly recreate this bug. I have a waypoint where I was sending a bunch of constructors which had 42 movement (lots of drives ). I would group them into fleets at a waypoint and send them to upgrade various starbases. I noticed at one point that when I sent a fleet of constructors to a shipayrd 41 distance from the waypoint, when the fleet hit the starbase they would ungroup and reset to 42 movement. If I then selected "No" to not upgrade that starbase I could then regroup them and send them on as if they had full movement again. If I didn't send them all in 1 move they would not get bugged like this and I haven't had a chance to fully explore exactly what was triggering the bug.

3) When I recently attempted to "Upgrade All" of one of my ships it charged me an appropriate ammount but only upgraded a single ship. This was the first time I attempted to use Upgrade All and was with 1.0D.008. I have not attempted to reproduce this as I haven't had enough cash to try again in that particular game

What are your starting techs?
Ok, that was it. I was using the default starting techs for Terran. I didn't realize a couple of them had bonuses. Good catch.

1. That you tried to fix it, but couldn't get it to work for reasons you don't yet understand?
2. Or that the game is working as intended, but that the players aren't SUPPOSED to see exactly how the bonuses impact production?

Just means we haven't tried to fix it yet.  I.e. If it's not in our "this was fixed" list, it probably wasn't fixed.

BTW, I want to take this moment to thank you guys for taking the time to help us out on this stuff.
