I'm always up for an expansion for a great game... Other players have requested things like multiplayer, tactical battles, fast carriers, invasion improvements, and so forth. ...but there's probably a point where you're starting to invest a lot of dev effort in stuff that only a minority (have said they) want, and at that point you might see decreased sales from "core" GC fans like me that have little or no interest in these kinds of features.<b

If I'm running out of any kind of memory on a medium sized galaxy with 3G of RAM and 640G of VRAM, that'd be something, even if I do run 1920x1200. I reinstalled (and deleted all my docs stuff to clean it out) but I'm only in the middle of my first game since, another medium. No invisible ships so far. The game did lockup twice last night, requiring kills from task manager. I don't recall that happening before. I rebooted and it stopped happening. I guess I'll run s
I don't like the idea of earlier planetary invasion either. I also don't think it's very feasible anyways since your populations are usually so small, except for maybe at your capital. It's also kind of silly to think you'd be doing invasions with no tech to even build armed ships. I don't really think you need to limit the colony race - the AIs do a good job of it so it's not like the player has getting an advantage. (except for maybe using multiple super early survey ships to augme
The enabling feature that allows you to do this is income...All it takes is an "extra" 100K in income per turn and you can convert anything to anything else very quickly, at least in game time. Question - if you're capable of that, surely the game is essentially over? (and what's the point) Couldn't you dominate the galaxy at any time if you're empire and economy is that strong? Couldn't you be wreaking havoc with spies and/or building warships and tr
Good to see some new players having fun and it's always interesting to me (someone who is constantly on the lookout for games worth trying) to see people discover gems like GC2 so long after release. For the love of God, will someone please do something about ground combat animation? Atari soldiers that look the same across all races firing the exact same lasers against the crane tanks and Happy Meal super tanks gets really, really old. Not sur
You can always play the older campaigns if you want to. I see no reason for concern - everybody can do what they want so it's all good. Personally I only play "sandbox" games and want the latest and greatest.
FarCry has been around for ages (and still looks great and has better gameplay than a lot of FPS stories), so you can get it for cheap. Why put up with ads when you can just buy it, for ex amazon and you can probably do better. $12 bucks is a small price to pay to enjoy one of the best shooters ever. :-/
To each his own. I like "large" maps but I find that for me the larger the map, the easier it is to win, and more likely it is that I'll follow the same "script" to success. I've been trying medium maps lately and they seem more suited to the AI style and ability.
It would be nice if the AI's could better understand what was going on in border skirmishes like this one. I don't generally like to go into all-out war with another civ, but I don't mind small military skirmishes over dearly wanted resources. You can't really expect the AI to be understanding about your desire to just prune a little bit of their empire for your gain. Sorry Mr. AI, I just want a planet or two of yours, but I don't really want to FIGHT
I finally had the Dread Lord event for the first time and it wasn't a big deal compared to some other events, like in that same game the spy infestation hit the galaxy putting 41 agents on my planets (gigantic map), which took forever to clean up, and I also got the one where an AI discovered an artifict that'd supposedly make them impossible to defeat over time (I seem to get this one every game), resulting in the genocide of one of my trade partners and allies. In a previous game (lar
I wouldn't ctrl+n because it's too buggy But I wouldn't like that map to start regardless of which empire I was playing because the starting positions are highly unbalanced. I'd also usually have more (4-5) AIs on that size map.
Should I reinstall?
I've added a debug.err because there seems to be messages about missing files and/or textures which seems odd given that I'm fully updated via SDC, don't use mods (hmm, maybe did a graphics upgrade mod at one point but stopped using it ages ago, maybe even before DA), and haven't altered any files myself. I specifically checked on this one sincce it involves ships: No files found matching mask C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar\ShipStyles\*.xml
So I'm playing my first gigantic map. For DAYs. It crashes here and there to the point that I put autosave up to every turn and quicksave constantly. Ultimately the game completely corrupts and I couldn't finish it. I was crushing the AIs, and it would've taken forever to finish - but I still wanted to finish it. Today I start a medium map (after reading a thread indicating that the AI is best on small/medium), and I'm having a great game, barely squeaking by, and after HOURS finall
I don't go the 100% approval rate (quite the opposite, I hover around 50% early on) and don't have problems with econ. For many, it probably doesn't matter because you're going with deficit spending anyways. As long as you have people and infrastructure to generate taxes by the time you can no longer deficit spend, it's all good. I also use the semi-questionable/exploitive (since the AIs never do it) sensor/anomolie econ booster trick (research sensors first, build multiple fast as po
You don't have to read the off topic drivel or respond. I just wish the stuff didn't show up in recent posts since it has nothing to do with GalCiv. People that post these off topic "debates" and whatnot have even more time on their hands than people that surf gaming forums for gaming info, and that's kinda remarkable!
One thing that makes no sense to me is that without some level of espionage you can't examine/view an enemy planet. But if you want to place an agent - you somehow magically instantly know all of their improvements. How exactly does that make sense?! Knowing what's on a planet is pretty critical info, especially if one wants to invade and is considering which types of invasions to use (like whether to use some that damage structures). It's also pretty amazing how the spies get from y
There are some pretty amazing players with in-depth knowledge of the game that frequent these forums, and I'm not one of them, but my two cents anyways: I build the power plants on production intensive worlds (for warship production) and rarely anywhere else. I'm not much of a number cruncher but I'm sure there's a breakpoint (number of factories) where a power plant is more efficient than another factory (industrial sector), and I think they're cheaper to maintain too. The first powe
I've never installed it mainly because of not caring for SDC. Masochism. You're missing out on a great expansion. Anyways. I'm revisiting GalCiv2 lately and have played DA since it released, including now. I enjoy digitally downloading games and think that SDC is a fine product - easy to use, only runs when you need it, way less intrusive and annoying than some (like Steam), and vastly superior to weaksauce like Sprocket. It's intere
Sounds like the CTRL-N bug. If you use that a lot, there is a chance the AI will be reset to "fool", and will act accordingly....doing almost nothing. Oh man, the CTRL-Ners!!! In real life, you can't just hit CTRL-N if you end up paralyzed a drug addict etc. Take some pride and play to the end without CTRL-N!! Play with the hand you have been dealt! Or you could just not worry about how other people play a game, s
I've been having a different problem that's sorta similar. If I play a game as one race, create a custom ship with name X, then play another game with another race and make them a ship with the same name, I get prompted to override and do, then the ship turns invisible (icon in ship design and ship on the game map). If I restart the game the ship "returns," but that's a pain. I've taken to naming all my ships with a prefix for the race to avoid ship carnage between races, since I usua
I think cloaking is an unnecessary complication. It's something neato for players but pretty much useless for the AIs since it'd be hard for them to both use and deal with. Fast ships pretty much duplicate "cloaking" effectiveness anyways, by allowing you to attack from great distances (likely outside of AI threat consideration), hit and run, and/or escape. In addition fast ships have the advantages of being able to attack more times per turn, generally get around the galaxy quicker,
Hopefully never - he said selfishly. I don't and would never play this type of game MP, and any time spent designing, developing, or supporting MP would take away from the SP game, something I'd never want to see happen. I believe in a recent preview for the upcoming expansion Brad said that *maybe* they'd do MP in GalCiv III, which would likely be several years from now. GalCiv is amongst some of the best quality to be found in single player gaming, due to the tight focus on
I have no problems using SDC - in a lot of ways it's better than many built-in patchers because it provides more info on what's available, better download management, clear history, it's easy to use, it's not annoying (like Steam), it only runs when you want it to, and it's harmless. Some things to consider (or remember): For one, Stardock doesn't put copy protection on their CDs (or built-in to the game code) and you don't have to have a CD in the drive to play it legally. I
Kind of a pain but good to know, thanks for the tip. This bug has been around for several patches now - it'd be nice if they'd fix it!
