OK - I wasn't aware of this. I bought the Gold Edition, online, which came with no manual that I could see. I then noticed I could load DL and DA separately, and that only DL had tutorial missions. So I naturally assumed it would be better to start with that. I need to investigate this further, it seems. Thanks for the info.
It's doubly frustrating for me because I've only just bought the game. I find the original release unplayable under Vista and I don't want to play the expansion pack first. To be honest I'd be thinking of trying to get a refund right now but of course I bought it online so I don't think that's even possible. I'm really quite disappointed about this.

I'm still concerned to know whether there will be a fix for the "poor framerate unless mini-map is minimized" issue for the original Dread Lords game. The beta 2 did indeed fix my problem (Vista x32, GF 7800 GS, 158.42 drivers). Everything's nice and smooth again now. Dread Lords is still choppy, though. Will the fix that's been applied to Dark Avatar be rolled back into the original release as part of the next update?
