Thank you very much for that AAR Wyndstar. Absolutely fascinating how rapidly you can pull that off.

Ah, I apologize. I think we've been in one of those situations where 3 blind men feel the same thing. One says "it's a tree", the other "it's a rope" and the last "it's a snake". It's actually an elephant. I should not have jumped to asssumptions that you were making mistakes or lacked experience. That was projecting on to you mistakes I made when I was inexperienced. I think the fact that you are playing with very slow research and I with very fast explains absolutely everything
If you are heavily relient on trade (and are not playing as the Korx), that may explain your problems. While I appreciate your efforts, you missed the whole point. The only reliable way for the Arceans to overcome the debt spiral (in my experience) at the beginning of the game is to get to the Trade tech. The reliance is by necessity not by strategic choice. Moreover, given the heightened maintenance costs and the Arceans lack of any native economic bonus (something not unique

Mumble, you may want to take a look at page two of the topic "Secrets of a High Scoring Game" in the Diplomats forum at the core. I wrote up the basic mechanic I used in that thread, though I executed it very sloppily this time around. Basically, it was a blatant copy of Wyndstar's approach in his Altarian AAR last spring (which I'd just read) only using the Korath(for the spore ships)instead, with one other slight twist.

The Thalan are so weak, would it imbalance them to let them build one of the current Hyperion Matrix on each planet? Given how research intensive their tree is and that they can not ever build the MCC, I don't think this would make them too strong in human hands personally. They still have crippling Diplomacy and Pop growth issues and a weak economy. They need a powerful advantage somewhere other than the end of the tech tree to offset it. You could also add a significant upkeep to them as y

I think the problem is simply that a description of the play style of an experienced player would be meaningless unless it was detailed enough to roughly imitate. Such descriptions usually take the form of After Action Reports, or AARs. There is a forum for such. I would recommend starting by searching for any posts made by Purge and Wyndstar. Those are two terribly strong players who have been very generous with their time and ideas. You could also go to the core, www.galacticcore.com, and
I love tech-trading as is. It's probably my second favorite part of Twilight of the Arnor right now (behind the unique tech trees). One thing the argument that "everyone ends up with the same tech in the end" misses is that their is a difference between having a tech early game and having the same tech late, as well as value to being able to count on having a specific tech rather than hoping to trade for it. I think the current system works well.Trading unique techs often happens immediate

I just posted in the sign up thread. I figured it would be too late to be entered on a team for this one, but I played a quick game this evening anyway and this is my game submission to show I'm actually intending to be in the league :)(required if I understood the sticky MVL thread). If this game would be useful for one of the teams, please feel free to retroactively assign me to a team. I apologize for not knowing how to post screen shots; the game is the only I've submitted under

If you are heavily relient on trade (and are not playing as the Korx), that may explain your problems. Trade takes a long time to break even, and the traders themselves are terribly fragile in wartime now that the galactic privateer appears to be gone (replaced with a Korx unique wonder). The Mind Control Center will dwarf trade as an economic solution worth researching towards. Additionally, I believe invading minor races imposes a rather large diplomatic penalty, which would explain why you

I think more than most other races the Arceans benefit from cntrl-N until you get a precursor mine, due to their dependence on the stellar forge for early military parity. The -10 speed hurts badly, for sure. I'm currently playing as the Arceans in a medium abundant all Suicidal with the latest beta, and I'm doing all right (16 planets, third out of 9 major races), having conquered 10 Thalan planets, but realistically to achieve this I've relied heavily on the Thalans' early lack of military o

I would like to see the technology Mini-Soldiers brought back. It was always my preferred invasion technique, and I do not think it was really imbalanced.

I love the concept of the Iconians. They still seem a tad underpowered however, especially when you compare them with the Korath. The Korath have a morale bonus, same as the Iconians. They start with a hit point bonus, which the Iconians have to research. They start with a Weapons bonus, which the Iconians advanced techs don't quite duplicate (+5 weapons each for total of 15). The Iconians only have 7 racial pick points. And spore ships are much more useful than being able to colonize aqua

The Krynn simply have a massive list of racial bonuses that cumulatively make them very strong. No one has mentioned the +25 diplomacy or +10 economy so far, but combine that with +50 to morale and defense and you've got a race than can play any style - diplomat, war monger, economic powerhouse, all of the above - efficiently. They really have no weak point.

This looks outstanding. I pre-ordered as soon as I got the e-mail. I do have one request: Would it be possible to balance the races better? Specifically, the Iconians are really weak. The unique technologies could be one way to bring them back into the pack. Can't wait to play it

Ok, I had to try to duplicate Wyndstar's rapid technology victory (especially since I'd not won a research victory yet). I couldn't match that speed, but here's how I ended up: Race: Altarians Difficulty: Suicidal Victory: Beyond Mortality Years: 2 Size: Tiny Alignment: Neutral v.1.50x3 Dark Avatar Score: 13,920 6/12/2007

I can testify that the Galactic Diplomats are very welcoming to newcomers. I bought the game 3 weeks ago and joined the Diplomats a week ago today. It was the best call I could have made for improving my skill at GalCiv2. Seven of the top eleven metaverse slots are currently held by Galactic Diplomats. These players are masters. They are also very nice guys and are patient and generous with their advice. I'm currently mopping up a suicidal, large map DA game with relative ease. T

One more of these, trying to optimize the tactic. This one finished on June 1 2226, but had a lower score for some reason. Character: JustinSane4 Race: Korath Years: 0 Difficulty: Suicidal Size: Tiny Alignment: Very Evil Score: 16,450 5/8/2007 v.1.50x3 DA

Another one (and my second ever suicidal win, though this one is a bit cheap): Character: JustinSane4 Race: Korath Years: 0 Difficulty: Suicidal Size: Tiny Alignment: Very Evil Score: 17,500 5/7/2007 v.1.50x3 DA I don't know that I could win above Masochistic with any other race. I love Spore Ships.
