Thanks for posting that link. I'm having the same fleet problem - killer! - and i'd seen 1.8f mentioned but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Can't beat GalCivII on a laptop! short chunks - yes no cd - yes strategy - yes ... and presumably... no extra investment - yes!
1) Are you sure that there is no ship on the planet? Theer will be a little shielod icon next to the planet if there is. 2) Are you sure that you are selecting your troopship (left click) before you right click on the planet? Sometimes the focus moves away (eg to a miner) without you realising it
Hello there... "The problem is all my games are looking the same," You play huge map with abundant habitable planets - try a medium map with uncommmon habitable planets. You will find it VERY different and you will have to change your strategy to do well. Cheers!
Hello there... What size galaxy do you play, and how abundant are the planets? These two things have a huge impact. Advice that is good for a huge galaxy/abundant planets is not good for small or medium galaxy and occasional planets. For example, Mumblefratz makes good points about colonisation and gives a target production rate - but this just isn't going to work with 5 races in a medium galaxy and occasional planets. In that situation, you are doing very well if you have 3 or 4 pl
If when you said 'resources mines' you meant asteroids that you mine, then yes, those are flippable.
The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner. Even more relevant today than when it was written.
also look through posts in this forum - eg useful stuff on economy, starbases, etc. The main thing is that this game is addictive - once you've got a glimmer of what to do you are hooked - so don't be afraid to try stuff out just to see what happens. So what if you do lose a few games? No problem, you'll be better next time...
I think in many ways this is the best PC game I've ever played - and that is because of the AI. It feels a bit like playing a good, complex board game against other people (that you can't see). With many (most?) games, what happens next is pre-programmed in. With this game what happens next is dependent on what you choose to do - and what they choose to do. So I agree that the planetary improvements etc aren't that whizzy - but that isn't the point. You don't buy this game to m
My all time favourite board game is Diplomacy. The game is about taking over europe, and the moves are troop and ship deployments leading to battles. But the interest ies in the off-board discussions - the diplomacy. Which country will you aly with and support? When will you turn on them? It is easy to lose a whole weekend playing this game. Best with 7 people. For something straightforward and addictive, try Mah Jongg. A bit like comlex rummy but far better!
Yep I bought it, played it about half way through, got bored. Love your synopsis "The Adventures of Sir Kicks-a-Lot on the Island of Conspicuously Placed Spike Racks." - spot on!
EnduroRacer... yes it is difficult to learn, or at least I have been finding it difficult, but pretty soon that difficulty becomes appealing. A light goes on, you understand something new, and then apply it... very satisfying. Similar to music. If you hear a record and like it straight away, you usually tire of it quite quickly. If you have to play it a few times and THEN you start getting into it, chances are that your enjoyment will be lasting...
Also, starbases are FUN. They do seem to attract enemy ships; it is hilarious to watch an enemy ship attack a well defended starbase with a little pop-pop of its guns, to be returned by a deafening and long cacophony as the starbase fires back. And obliterates the enemy. Very satisfying.
You'll regret it if you buy from ebay - not only will DA not work, but you won't get any updates. Buy direct from Stardock and support them - this is a fantastic game and they deserve the support. And of course you can play the game with your stardock account on any computer you like, for the same license fee.
The lack of anything to trade sounds like maybe you haven't cranked research up high enough. How long have you been playing? Expect it to take quite a while to really understand what is going on. That is one of the appeals of the game! (to me, anyway) It is worth spending a little time to see what happens as the result of an action you take - eg changing the focus from social to research on a planet - look at how the weeks change for your outputs. I always want to plough on to
53 this year... am I the oldest? fantastic game btw
Thanks! That prompts me to ask,can you move ships *without* pressing the turn button? I typically select a ship, then right click a location, and each time I click Turn the ships move. But it sounds like you can move ships around within a turn? Sorry for newby question!
Sometimes the 'turn' button is green, and sometimes it isn't. It seems to be green more often early in the game. Any idea why? Does it make any difference? Cheers!
Hello there... Ta for the suggestion. I did start out with the tutorials, but that was a while ago, I'll give them another spin. Cheers
Hello there... I'm completely new to this game. I'm sure I'll love it when I figure it out. I've read the manual, and the 'beginners guide', but neither of these are basic enough. I need to know the absolute basics of interacting with the game. For example, trying to get a ship to go somewhere seems very hit and miss. Clicking on a ship in the ship list and then right clicking on the map doesn't do it, for example. Exactly what does? And why is the 'turn' button sometimes g
Hello there.. I just bought galcivII & I had the same problem - skipping sound. Even when just listening to the tutorials! I turned hardware acceleration for sound down to basic & it fixed it. Anything higher than basic & I get the problem. Cheers
