Just ask experienced players how they go about things, and make sure to check out the Beginners Strategy guide (its posted on the forums). You can get insight on some tried and true methods to win a game. If you apply these methods you will get experienced in the game over time. Make sure to read the manual too, to learn of game functionality not shown in the beginner's strategy guide.

I find it's relatively easy to win suicidal if you have a lot of time on your hands and follow some reasonably strict methods to get yourself in a good position so you're not attacked. Is it fun? Not really. Therefore, I tend to play on an even difficulty, Tough. This way I can basically play how I want and have a nice fight with the AI.
As I said, I will change the descriptions to something nice for those who want it.
Would you like me to make a mod that makes serious tech descriptions? I have no problem doing so, as they bother me a bit as well.
Jamming engines on ships is not a great approach unless you plan to retreat each time you see a fight and always go for victories other than military. Usually 1-2 decent engines is fine depending on the ship. The heavier the ship, the fewer the engines as it can withstand attacks on the way and it doesnt need to retreat as often. It also usually has improved sensor range to see attackers coming for it sooner.
Well, you can still enter in values for ability points to whatever you want in the raceconfig.xml file. It will make your customization points go negative if you do too many, but the effects will still show.

Customization points seem to be hard coded, as the tag looks to be ignored. I can probably change this value by messing with the game itself, not the xml files; however, I don't think stardock would like this, so that won't happen. Best to wait until they notice this "bug?" and fix it. If it is broken.
This is a mod I have been making for a decent amount of time. It's not all that hard, it just requires a huge amount of time because of the sheer number of techs that let ships be upgraded in some way. This is my attempt to alleviate the annoyance of constantly creating new ship designs. They will be available for you as you research the right techs, and they will not be inferior as the GC2 starting ships were. This mod is not complete, and I will slowly complete it as I play the game
