I don't think that it would be very difficult to program - perhaps the majority of games are now done in some kind of 3d (shooters etc) and graphics cards are geared fully towards 3d (and the latest integrated intel cards are all excellent at this). The real challenge would just be making sure that it doesn't demand too much processing power (but modern graphics cards and the latest intel integrated cards can handle a lot) - and for the developers to create a good interface.

I'd imagine though most people are like me - not really sure how to go about adding in mods etc. And personally I think that it would add a lot to the gameplay - its much more fun to use cool looking ships!

That last bit should read: "(as in missiles, engines, hull size) BUT that look different." Is it not possible to edit the first post thats done? It should be made clear that everything I've mentioned above would be done WITHOUT leaving the game - i.e. downloading ships/designs would be an integrated part of the game.

I have to admit that I'm awestruck by some of the ships I see on https://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=162&aid=104951&p=2 that people have created. For my part I'm too busy playing the game - so while I enjoy adding new technologies to my ships, they don't resemble works of art by a long shot. Yet I would love to include other peoples designs in my game. Would it be possible for this site to have a large repository of ships that we could scroll through and download?

My tablet pc (12" screen, Pentium M 2GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel 915 chipset) has a screen resolution of 1400x1050. Given the small screen however, it is difficult to make out whats on the small bottom right galaxy window (when its on the the giantic play area - which I always do). Is there a way to increase this part so that it takes up more of the screen, without having to drop down the resolution?

Reply to My game idea in Game Ideas

It sounds like we need a new WW2 game written by the developers of Gal Civ 2 - that resembles a lot of Gal Civ 2s dynamics. Countries/areas instead of planets though. Nations instead of players. Invade another country - or move you troops in to an alied/friendly nation. Economy and research would work just like Gal Civ 2. Research Radar - or anti-submarine devices? Or gas devices, better troop weapons - bombers, or better fighters (hurrican vs spitfire)? Spend time dev

Are we all in favour of the idea then I did say that it was "unlikely to ever take place". Personally I'd love it if offical packs where released for Star Trek (different series), Star Wars, Babylon 5 and Battle Star Gallatica for GalCiv2 and other games. I'd buy them all and have loads of fun. So to recap - a company would do/hold the ships/stations/models for th

I'd also like to know why Starbases wouldn't be able to travel in space. Theres no gravity - so size and weight should not matter. Starbases should be able to move - even if its at a slower pace than normal (they can't fight when moving but can defend themselve - how does that sound?)

9 Replies 6,882 Views

Yeah - I've never actually used a military starbase - they take ages to build and can't be moved. My understanding is that they can't actually attack a planet - they just give "bonuses" to attacking ships (er.... why not just spend money/time on MORE ships instead?!). Now IF a military starbase could actually attack a planet (and protect troop modules - or better yet have a "troop module" component that can be added to it) it would be a different story. I would be buil

What - the actual story (or does Halo auto-generate levels)? I've only briefly seen Halo on the X-box (a friend had it and was playing it). Such a game would involve having a new planet (level) auto-generated for each new game/new mission - and so the story couldn't really be a normal one centered around pre-set levels - so the story really had to be something simple like the "no memory" thing. The nasty ending was copied from a series in the "2000AD" magazines I read as a kid

This is a simple idea that could generate more money for franchises and developers, but is unlikely to ever take place. Franchises like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galatica, Star Wars etc could build a central repository of star ships / star bases etc - the models all done to an extremely high (future proof) standard. Then, when games like Galatic Civilisations 2 is realised - and proves a success - they can authorise the games developers to create an add on pack for their

The BBC had an amazing programe where three members of the public sat around a table in a dark room - their role was to be the government ministers in charge of a particular crisis. An advisor was there to give the three 'ministers' choices to make - and it was up to them to make time-critical decisions that could have positive or negative effects on the emerging crisis. The show was backed up with a big plasma screen that connected the three to various live experts that prese

Game Scenario: You are the "go to" guy - a specialist in dealing with hostile, unfamiliar environments - on other planets. You have no memory of your life before - were you a criminal? Did you volunteer for this? Is your memory simply gone in case you fall into the "wrong hands"? Whatever it is you do the same job, over and over again. And you enjoy it. Each time that you're awoken and are preped for the jump (droid ship drops you on planet surface) you are truly up for it - it's a

Another thing that could happen in the later stages would be two or more lesser empires deciding that they aren't going to win, and therefore merge their empires together out of the blue, creating an aditional threat. Such an empire would have a good number of ships, money and technology - combining what both empires had. This could radically shift the balance of power to make things a little more interesting in the later parts of the game. Anyone else got further possibilities

I'd like to see a planet killer ship - now that would be interesting! We could also have a planet creator (I think you could create planets in one of the early Space Empires games). I'm also fed up half way through each game - by the half way point I know if my strategy has won the game or not - so unless I start destoying all my own ships and insulting all my neighbours - its a given that I've one. Boooorrrrriiiinnnngggg. I've even just abandoned games half way throug

Is it possible to automate freighters so that they make there own way to planets? It occurred to my that I hadn't been bothering with them for a while. If I have ten freighters and war is constantly braking out between races I end up spending most of time trying to find where the freighters are that have been cancelled due to dangerous environments or whatever. Then I need to try to figure out a safe place to send them. Why can't the computer have an option al

Don't buy facilities on new planets - just leave them empty. I always win my games despite only having my top 10 or so (out of 150) planets with things on them. Building anything on planets takes money - money which would be better spent allowing you to colonize as many planets as possible (each colony takes up a certain amount of revenue). Colonize the best planets first, always striving to expand your reach to most parts of the galaxy - they'll be time to come

I would like to see finer control over your plannets. E.g. When I have 100 odd plannets its a REAL pain going throught them all to add a factory facility, entertainment facility, ecomonic facility and farming facility. I'm talking close to twenty minutes doing the same repetitive thing. I'd also like to see a true 3d world where planets/systems aren't on a flat grid but rather some are above/below/to either side of each other.

I would like to see a Might and Magic RPG. While seen in the first perspective, you actually control a "party of people". Eight is usually more fun. There are two really fun things about this type of game. First is character creation and development. Choose from human, dwarf, gnome, half-orc, elf etc. Choose their role - thief, barbarian, knight, archer, sorcerer, cleric etc. Choose male or female. The enjoyable bit is when you DON'T see the characters so that you can imagi

I start the game with the 8 points to planet quality, and the other 2 into population growth. I have developed a simple strategy that allows me to win just about every time. I fast buy one factory - and build mainly factories on all other tiles on the home plannet. I then continue to churn out colony ships as fast as I can - but limit the number of people on each colony ship to 100 or less (otherwise its hurts my income from tax). I don't just colonise any p

The other interesting thing with 3d worlds is that you wouldn't need to switch to a close up combat viewer: the view would just appear to "zoom way in" to the point where you can the fine detail of fleet battles. It would make the thing much cooler and seamless.

24 Replies 16,866 Views

I don't think it would be too problematic so long as you can rotate/spin/zoom etc. You could even "walk" into it, placing the camera angle in the main content. I'd think that it would open up new levels of gameplay and make it more interesting as Jinksy. Heck - lets see the planets slowly spinning around thier suns You could also switch to an alternative 2d representation (lines indicating nearest

At the moment GC2 is played on a flat playing area showing plannets all in a 2D grid. Granted, you can swivel the grid, zoom in and out etc but I think it would be great to have the option of a true 3D playing area. This would in effect change the playing area from a flat grid into something more like a cube or sphere. You'd have solar systems and planets to the left/right of you - and above/below you. Obviously being able to zoom in/out and rotate the playing area would become more i

The last Space Empires game had a clean, crisp and good looking main view screen/window - it was very polished. It was still 2D and very, very good. The reason why many people prefered it to all the other similiar games was due to its outstanding gameplay - making it far better than any big 3d game (or similiar 2d game with better graphics). I don't have it anymore - I actually threw the disk out and uninstalled it because I was spending too much time playing it! I still think it was more
