You know, it occurs to me that we should put together an ultimate guide. These are just my tips and even I admit they're not the best possible way to do things. That's why I'm careful to stress it's just for newbies. Everyone here is probably as addicted to the game as I am and plays it just as much or they wouldn't be lurking on this msg board. Let's figure out the best possible way to handle the game and put it all together into a single guide that any player can use, playing at any

No. Well, yeah actually, but it means editing a game file. Back it up first. Open this file in a text editor - C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Data\English\Scenarios\_NameOfTheScenario_.gc2scenario Change the number at the end of this line to correspond to whichever race you want to play as: PlayerRace=0 Human=0 Drengin=1 Altarian=2 Arcean=3 Torian=4 Yor=5 Korx=6 Drath=7 Thalan=8 Iconian=
Why in the world would you put phasers on tiny hulls? Better escorts? You want them to kill whatever's attacking the ship they're escorting, right? I always go for the Doom Ray as my first real weapon. I don't
Even being neutral, you should go as far as habitat improvement, so you can build the Aphrodisiac thing. Doesn't take long to research.
Why do they have such massive economy's even with the same or less worlds? That's the difference between the levels. At the very high levels, they get an extra economic boost.
The Normal difficulty level is easier in 1.1 than it was in 1.0X. The devs did this because their were a lot of people who could dominate at easy, but got creamed at normal. O_o Well.... that explains a few things....
It's not supposed to be like that? I noticed that ages ago but thought it was supposed to be that way. Both of the two beam weapons between Disruptor III and Doom Ray are less powerful than the Disruptors. EDIT - Actually, now that I think of it, there's only one weapon, but two techs in between the two.
They're working on a memory leak problem right now. Your problem might go away soon. In the meantime, you might try turning it off and restarting every so often, just to clean up any memory leaks.
LOL....... I'll bet that thief's next accomplishment will be to qualify for a Darwin award.
Although, I have never noticed the Dread Lords forming fleets Oh, they'll fleet up alright. It usually takes a while, so maybe you're beating them before they start doing that. I guess you could always spam t
Thanks Stardock for whatever you fixed in 1.1 final. It just occurred to me that I've only had a single crash since installing it, and that was probably my fault anyway. It used to crash CONSTANTLY.
-- Doesn't that, pretty much, destroy the whole advantage of being the attacker - Yes, it destroys the whole advantage of being the attacker (except the decision to initiate combat or not). ROFL..... There goes my ENTIRE combat strategy. Jesus, I can't wait to try this on the Dread Lords. If I thought the battles were bloody before.......
Oh man.... check out this update Cari's working on. I'll have to rewrite this sucker AGAIN. https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=162&AID=116216 5)... Combat was changed to allow battles to end in a draw Be
Jeez.... 30 comments already? Let's not have us a flamewar please. My goal with all this is to help newbies and keep them from making mistakes, not start a flame war about whose strategy is dumber. If someone has a better way of doing something than the way I do it, say what it is. You'll notice in several areas where I mention how other people like to do things. If it's better than my way, I'll put it in. A few points to clear up. - The guide is aimed at people
Maybe it's changed since 1.0, but I've seen the Drengin grow vastly powerful before. Believe me, you won't pity them after you see what they can do with a few dozen worlds in their infrastructure. They knocked off the Altarians, then the Torians, then Drath, then the Iconians. All of them surrendered their worlds to the Drengin, rather than to someone else. Then they came for me (followed not long after by the Arceans, who wanted to grab some of my planets before the Drengin got them
They give it a very low priority, but eventually they will research it, if the game drags on long enough.
A kill is a kill. Ask any fighter pilot. Killing a great big zeppelin in WWI still counted as a kill and still let you make "Ace" if you popped 5 of them.
Is this a theory or have you actually tried this? When they start using fleets and ultimate invulnerability, I don't think those cargo hulls are going to do much. I'd rather have a larger swarm of fighters of slightly less individual firepower. Altogether it'd be more firepower than a few cargo hulls. When they shoot back and take out one or two of the fighters, there's still several more to continue the fight.
I saw all that too, but assumed it was due to me playing mostly the "Normal" difficulty. Maybe they're just buying ships when they want them? A large population without having to pay much in colony upkeep probably means a healthy treasury.
EDIT: The combat and shipbuilding tips in this guide apparently are going to be COMPLETELY invalid pretty soon. Stardock's working on altering the game again to where ships can still shoot back, even if you attack and kill them first. So...... I guess the combat tips will apply as of RIGHT NOW (May 6), but not in the future. I'll guess I'll spend several days seeing how the new combat engine works and update this guide yet again. This is an update to the older guide I w
I see what happened. I had Altaria selected in order to speak to them, so the cheat code made their worlds mine. I started a new game, didn't select any planets and surrendered to them, hit CTRL Z and pressed turn, now Earth says it belongs to the Altarian Republic and all the AIs are moving around scouting and colonizing. I can't manage the Altarian worlds this time.
Ok, my bad. It seems like I took over the Altarians? This is ....... odd.... All the planets have the Altarian's logo, but they say Terran Alliance and I can manage their planets if I press CTRL Z to stop it from autoturning. And I have absolutely no influence zones...... I'm gonna play with this a bit and see WTF is going on.

Ok, I have this running in a window right now. I surrendered to the Altarians, then hit CTRL Z and then TURN. Now Earth belongs to the Altarians and the game is playing on its own. This is pretty cool.
