I find out that if you change the begining setting of the gmes before it start you really can avoid an aggresive colonization strategy games dominated games. Pick up rare common world, a not so big galaxy (small or tiny, but I prefer small) with few solar system and few planet by system. Also, make technology easy to research. With this kind of setting, it is quite easy to survive with just one or two good to average planet. But personnaly, I like colonisation. I
