low framerates with 1.59 and 1.6 betas

With the latest Dark Avatar 1.5 (release version) I get the same framerates that I get with Dreadlords. However, if I use a beta version my framerates drop by roughly 75%.

It doesn't matter if I use the 1.59.096 beta or the 1.6 b5 test 2 beta available from this forum. I guess I am one of the people who doesn't get increases with the new graphics engine. I am confused by the drop in framerates with the 1.59.096 beta though. Is there any differences graphics wise with the 1.59 beta that should cause the framerate drop?

Also, the framerate drops only occur when there are ships on my screen. If I scroll around for example in areas where are there are only planets and not ships I do not get the framerate drops.

The drops remain even after I turn off every graphics setting available, including all of the texture settings.

I'm playing on a really low end laptop that I am afraid to mention the settings of because someone will come in here laughing at me. All I will say is that the laptop does well enough that plays a game on a medium map with performance that I consider acceptable (as long as I am not using one of the betas). The laptop has an integrated Intel 82855 graphics card with the latest drivers. I play with 1024x768 resolution.

Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. If this is a DA report, you'll find the debug in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar instead. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Note: If running on Vista with DA 1.6b2 or later, the debug.err is now located in My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar.

Ok, here is my debug.err with me trying to use the 1.6 beta. Anyway, once again yes my system specs are low, as the debug.err file indicates but the game is completely playable when I am not using any of the betas.

My graphics drivers are from 2006 but if you go to the Intel website that is the latest driver that is available.

I wasn't getting very good performance before the 1.59 patch, but now my framerates are even worse.

Well, neither of you have much RAM, so the slowdown could be due to windows swapping stuff from the hard drive and the new graphics optimiztions were using more memory.  The build that just went up reduces it but we're still looking to try to reduce the amount of memory that DA uses.

kholdstayr, if you disable point sprites from the video tab of the options menu you may get better performance, because then your video card won't have to try to emulate them.

To increase the amount of Virtual Memory available to Windows:
 
1) Right click on the My Computer icon and chose properties
2) Click on the advanced tab
3) Under performance, click on the Settings button.
4) Click on the advanced tab
5) Click on the change button
6) Change the initial size to the recommended size and then increase the maximum size.
 
As a note, you should make sure that you have enough hard drive space left for the maximum virtual memory size or you'll start having problems whenever Windows has to allocate more virtual memory. You can get the size of the virtual memory in gigs by dividing the number by 1024.

To cut down on GalCiv2/DA's memory usage:

+ turn off the background stars and nebulas
+ play on Medium galaxies or smaller with fewer opponents
+ reduce the availability of habitable planets, number of stars, etc
+ turn off mods

Also, check to see if you get better framerates in a window, because we've gotten a few reports lately that the game runs faster in a window.

Hi Cari, thanks for the reply. As I stated earlier, I actually did turn off every graphics feature to test to see if I would get improved framerates but this did not work. I disabled every texture feature, cranked the starfield and galaxy effects sliders down to 0, disabled bump mapping, and also disabled point sprites as you mentioned. Doing all of the above doesn't gain a single frame per second. Like I said there seems to be something going on with ships. Say I start a new game and all the ships I have are a colony ship, miner and the flagship. Having it so just one of those ships appears on my screen at the beginning of a new game kills the frame rates. If I scroll away the frame rates go back up. Asteroids don't seem to affect the framerates, nor do planets.

Ok, I increased my virtual memory and added 1 gig to it and there was no framerate increase with the betas.

I am having the same problem. Whenever i go anywhere near ships my framerate drops to about 3.

Ok, one more development on the frame rate front. If I go into the ship designer my framerates jump back up to normal. I find this a bit odd since the ship designer doesn't effect the frame rates but rendering ships on the main game screen seems to give me the slow downs.

Braddock, do you get a more normal framerate when you go into the ship designer screen?

Unfortunately, no. The framerate is consistent with the one I get in the main game. I tried battles too, but predictably that's even slower.

None of these things help much because it seems to be only the ship models that are causing the severe slowdown. With just planets and stars and other objects onscreen, I get a nice 50-70 fps. With one ship, it will go down to about 15 fps, two or more we're in single digit territory. Even turning off the ship textures only resulted in an increase of 4 fps (from about 7) with two ships on-screen.

Regardless, I do plan on picking up more RAM once I can afford it. If that's the only problem, great. I was just wondering why an update that increases performance on most systems decreases performance for a small handful of us.

Out of curiosity, is there anyone out there with 512 RAM that didn't experience a decline in performance with the new beta patches?

Oddly enough I can't seem to get windowed mode to work. I untick "Fullscreen" in video options, but the game remains fullscreen even when I restart it. Alt+Enter doesn't work either.

If you run windowed but leave it set to your desktop resolution, it'll look pretty much identical to fullscreen.

Alt-Enter doesn't do anything--this isn't a DOS program! Try Alt-Tab instead

Hmm....ok, so it sounds like it's not just more memory usage.  But probably all of you are in sw vp mode. 

Ok, try this to force it to use hw vp mode:

1) Create a shortcut that points directly to GC2DarkAvatar.exe. (Right click on the exe and choose send to desktop as shortcut)

2) Right click on the shortcut and choose properties.

3) Left click in the Target field and hit the END key on your keyboard so that the cursor is at the end of the field.  Hit space.  Type the word HARDWAREVP then hit OK.

Start the game and then see if it says something like this in your debug.err (with your own video card there):

Debug Message: HAL (hw vp): NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

If it worked, continue in the game and see if you get better framerates.  It might look weird because if your video card is normally starting in sw vp mode, that means that it's having to emulate something.  So there may be graphics missing entirely or other weirdness if you're able to force it to run in hw vp mode.

But if that's the cause, I can have our 3D engine guru figure out something for the sw vp cards.

Updated to the newest beta last night... finally... and everything seems sorted out. I like the ability to look at the framerate, thanks Cari , and on a medium map with all abundant, all majors/minors I took a little 'test drive'. Even though I've turned down some of the graphics settings as per advice here, the frame rate seems pretty good, holding around 75 and never really dipping below 68. Now I'm not sure what's 'optimal', but I am assuming this is good, eh?
So far so good. Like I said, merely a few turns worth of a test drive. This weekend will be the 'real' test. RAM usage didn't seem too bad (used up about 600 or so during this trial run) but again, I only played for a handful of turns. Thanks guys, and gals at Stardock. When I am wrong, I'm wrong and I admit it when I am... I was wrong and most humbly apologize. Frustration rules my logic processes at times, or to put it another way, I should remember to put my mouth in gear before dropping the clutch.

I tried out the HARDWAREVP trick and the game won't even get to the main menu screen. It just goes black right when you start it and it won't do anything.

The debug.err file says something like this towards the end:

Using multilsample setting: D3DMULTISAMPLE_NONE
Could not create the render device.
Initialize Direct3d Failed.

Rats, I was afraid of that.  I still think it probably has something to do with the sw vp mode.  I'll e-mail our 3D guru about it, but he's off today and we'll all be gone until Tuesday.

Ok, I'll continue to monitor this thread next week to see if anything comes up.

I wonder if the slowdown has something to do with lighting and reflective effects on the ships? All the planets and asteroids and stuff just kind of have a brightness but not really a shadow casting lighting effect on them, but the ships are all bright from the star light and have shadows and look reflective.

I've turned off the ambient and specular light settings and they don't improve anything. The ships are still reflective though even with the specular light setting turned off. I know that the ships are obviously designed to look metallic so they have a reflective look to them and all that, so you probably can't turn that effect off.

Anyway, what are the differences in the 3d graphics between a group of asteroids or planets and the ships? It isn't textures because you can turn the textures off on the ships and you might get a 2 FPS improvement. So thats why I was wondering if it was lighting effects.

CariElf, hw vp worked for me! 50fps when the three starting ships are onscreen; ten times what I was getting before. I didn't notice any graphic weirdness, but I didn't have the game running very long.

Addendum: I played a little more and the only graphics I noticed missing were the background stars and nebulas (nebulae?).

You might notice missing damage effects as well.

VP means vertex processing.  The ships models are made up from several triangles and each point of the triangle is called a vertex.  When it says sw vp, it's having to emulate stuff that is normally handled by the driver.  HW VP means that it's doing the processing in the video card.
