Suggestion for Players Like Me

If you're like me, you are competitive. You've got a background in a lot of RTS games, straight up from C&C, Red Alert, Warcraft, Starcraft, TA, then into a couple Civs and Alpha Centauri. You know the way to play the game is to conquer your opponent. Build up, crush them, rejoice at your greatness.

But what if we break from the norm?

I just started a game where I decided to try something different. What if I put military as a bottom priority? What if I concentrated on self-improvement, actually using diplomacy?! Until now, diplomacy consisted of the AI requesting something, and me rejecting it. After all, anything I give them only makes them stronger, which only postpones their inevitable destruction (this is the mindset I've had, which I guess I picked up from Alpha Centauri).

How did all those old games go? Well, after the initial colony rush, the build up, I'd end up with everyone hating me and at war with me. Normally I could win, unless something 'unusual' happened (which has taught me to always turn off mega events). But to be honest, these games were fairly boring.

This time, I went high on diplomacy, and economics. I still put some priority on research, which is always necessary in these types of games.

What has happened:
1) Population/Size speaking, I am at par with every other race.
2) My military is non-existant
3) On each planet, I concentrated on economics and lightly on moral and research. Nothing on manufacturing or food (food = population = moral drop, a serious problem in all my other games).
4) My economy is through the roof, with moral nice & high, I can tax the heck out of everything, and everyone pays up with a smile.
5) My research was strong, but not the best - until I utilized my high diplomacy (my first research priority) and started trading with other races, sometimes even 'unfavorable' trades. After that, I was top for research. I even picked up some nice military techs, and managed to train medium hulls for when I might need to defend myself.
6) By doing all my research trading, the other races started to really like me. I managed some treaties, and decided to keep relations strong, which would come in handy later!
7) I stayed on bad terms with the top race (Terrans), so as to provide a possible significant opponent later, or at least someone to throw the other races at to wear each other down.
8) At this point I've got great relations with everyone (except Terrans), my economy and research is #1, and its time to have some fun.
9) I tell the #2 military race (Drath) to attack the terrans (a tiny portion of my huge fortune was needed for this). A couple other races notice... one decides to join the fun on their own and attacks the terrans, the other just drops relations with terrans.
10) The terrans, though weakened, kick their butts, and peace treaties are signed. Perhaps if I had kept diplomacy going with Drath, they'd have stayed in the fight longer... I shall try that later.
11) I trade a bit with the Drath, wait a bit for them to rebuild, and bribe them to attack again. This time, I keep re-inforcing them with tech, and a small amount of donations. This war seems to be fairly steady. Hmmm, some starbases built on 'bonus resource tiles' seem to have been destroyed (on both sides) - YOINK - I'll take those bonuses.

Well, thats where I have to halt the story - because that's where I am now. The AI is still mostly using small fighters, with a few mediums thrown in. I'm in the process of building some very powerful custom mediums (cruisers), and I'm thinking I'll steamroll across the terrans, then the drath. Unfortunately, this goes back a bit to my traditional militaristic mind-set, but I'm getting a bit bored now. Any ideas what I might want to do for fun?

Hmm, after reading another thread, I think some people might be interested in how I'm maintaining my peaceful existance:

1) I am aldarian.
2) I never (or very rarely) reject another race's request.
3) I do diplomacy trading basically EVERY TURN. It's probably going to start getting a bit tedious soon.
4) The map is large, but the splanets are 'occasional' (or 1 step down). The result is that each race gets their starting 'cluster' (2 planets), and about half were able to colonize 1 additional planet. I think this has helped to keep every race 'close' to each other in size and power, so none are getting too confident.
5) My relations are almost maximum 'green' with everyone (except terrans).
6) I think I've got the same ethical stance as almost everyone (good).

I'm considering stopping the building of my cruisers, and seeing if I can, indeed, complete a non-conquer victory, without a military.

I've always played the diplomatic type of game. Even with Civ2 i was all about building up my empire and keeping just enough military to protect. One of the reasons i moved onto this generation of TBS 4X games was so that i could win without eventually destroying everyone.

My games are completely balanced. but i usually dont even get started with a military for a while. maybe after a few techs ill build a medimum hulled ship to keep in orbit. my last game was like that until the drengin declared war on me. but i had the tech advantage, created the Drengin Blackeye and wound up not just giving them a black eye but leaving them with a single planet (got many techs outta that peace deal... a good portion of the missle offence tree that i was not planning on using). then they surrenderded to me a short while later.

Money and knowledge are power. If you can out produce, out adapt and out spend, you cant lose.

If you want a funny game, try to be at war using an inferior navy. This will make you drop blood tears, but it´s very challenging. Be weak, and the game will be very funny.

I like to play with small empires and a medium-low quality navy. This makes me stay at defense, but with some military bases, i can stay in one piece. The diplomacy can do the "research" for me.

I'd like the ability to do a bit more with diplomacy - not just yell and threaten, but talk and be a backroom dealer. It'd be nice to be able to go
"Hey, drath. I heard the terrans were eyeing your home planet. Also they are crackin wise about your mommas" and drop relations, without having to do it by outright paying them to go to war.

More subtle diplomacy would be very much welcomed.

my latest game I destroyed one race, and the other two that joined got their butt kicked and gave me a bunch of planets to not wipe them off the map either (drath and torrien). I'm at war with the Yor and Korx, and really have the game in the bag, total ownage on influence, overall power, production, tech, and BC. This one race I was in an alliance with and they went to war with the korx, and now just went to war with the Yor, and are trying to hog up all the planets I was going to scarf up, kind of pissed me off. So I got the dregin to declare war on my ally, and then my ally asked if I would help, I was like no, so we dropped allies and then they declared war on me the next turn. ;/ I wasn't quite ready to declare war on them, but whatever. I look forward to kicking their butt, supposedly their considered #1 military but in reality Dregin and korx and even Yor are tougher than them imho, even if they have more ships (based on tech of weapons in the ships, not number).....

In this game I have like 25+ spies, and 300 K BC, I am totally owning.....its july 2233.......metaverse game.....

Next game I'm going to raise up the difficulty.....
