Expansion suggestion

Hi there,

I started playing this wonderful game a week ago. My friend, who had bought it, told me to try this game. I do not have a copy yet, but plan on buying one as soon as I go near the game retail store.

Alright. I am an hardcore player of Star Wars Rebellion. This old, basic game was so fine in my mind that no game since had come even close to "replace" it. Now, there is GalCiv 2. Thank you, devs !

Ok, to the main topic. There is only two things I miss from Star Wars Rebellion in GalCiv2.

First : heroes. You know, special characters that can spy, sabotage installations (and ships orbiting a planet), make diplomacy (add influcence), boost reseach progression, abduct other heroes, modify the characteristics of space fleet and ground troops... I know that adding this to the game could be really hard, depending on the design (AI, balance, code) but hey, it is just an idea ! Just imagine the strategy bonus this game could get ! (I know, the strategy factor is already HUGE in GalCiv2 )

Second : multiplayer. Again refering to Rebellion, I think that this old game has a wonderful multiplayer concept. Maybe that could be investigated. Just one human opponent, all others are AI. Disable turn-base, make it speed-configurable. Example : the speed is set to "1 day". So, you decide to move a "Constructor". He could become dark gray indicating it is unusable and take 7 days to complete its move (make 1 day = 1 real life minute), then return usable. Oh, you got a lot to do, reduce the speed in order to have time to do it all (1 day becomes 2, 3, 4 minutes). Constructing, searching, etc... are already in weeks so... It is hard to describe, but Rebellion players will understand what I mean (I hope hehhe). Just thought I could mention it.

Like I said, I am just throwing ideas for an expansion. This game is incredible and has soooo much potential. Good work devs !

I think the character thing would be good. If I'm not mistaken, some of the older civ games had actualy spy characters and units. So why not space civ ?

Well, some would call your leader a hero... I call mine Lazy Slob. Of course, Lazy Slob does tend to conquer a lot of worlds...

And, really, I wouldn't pay for multiplayer. I bought this game so I wouldn't have to.

Not to offend the OP, but I'm getting a bit tired of feature requests based on other games. New features should have their own merits to be judged against the kind of game StarDock wants GalCiv2 to be, not have a "like in XXX" to promote it.
Every game has it's own approach to it's genre so their individual features are not automatically suitable for each other. Focus on the feature, not the source of the feature.

Note that v1m's advice requires you to zoom out into tactical view first.

Urgh, too many MP posts! It got defeated. Leave it alone!

Especially, like Mirvnillith said, based on other games. This isn't star trek, star wars, or MoO. This is galciv.

Heroes are probably more likely than MP, they ranked higher in the poll, and wouldn't require quite as much work, and aren't so opposed.

It was just a way to express my thinking. I don't care if it is like this game or that game or if it is the GalCiv way. Sorry, but the way I found to illustrate it was to give an example.

Whats wrong if you like features from other games and point out that you would like something similar in GC?
For example I prefer the system you design units in alpha centauri over the "you have this tech you can build this unit" system in Civ.
So if someone would ask what i would like for Civ I would say "I want do design my units like I can in alpha centauri".
Of course GC is GC and not alpha centauri or Civ or "insert any game name here".
BUt I think its good if you take good ideas from other games, have a look if they would suit your game and if they do insert them.

Adding "Hero's" would entail giving them "History". If the same guy who wrote the descriptions of Techs and Diplomatic Dialogue wrote the Histories, I think I would rather drink lit Diesel Fuel, than read them.

Star Wars had the movies to back up the Histories of the Heros. It's highly unlikely that Heros for GalCiv2 could remotely have the same depth unfortunately. Otherwise it's a welcome idea IMHO.

When you talked about heroes you made them sound like spys and agents, I think that they are going to have that in the Dark Avatar expansion pack.

They already have history. Frogboy has been writing the story of galciv from the perspective of it's main characters for a very long time.

Well I just hope to Gawd that Brad wasn't the one who wrote the Tech Descriptions and DipDialogues. I'll try to track down those stories. Thanks Marc

It was, and they never got released. And they aren't that bad.

I was indeed, but now with DA, I do see heroes like these :
- Admiral : boosting fleets statistics;
- Pilot : boosting single tiny-small hull ships;
- General : boosting planetary defense on which they are assigned;
- Spy : do what DA spies do, but better;
- Assassin : elimitate opponents heroes;
- Researcher : boosting research of the planet where he's assigned;
- Smuggler : uses a trade route to manage "illegal" trade from planet to planet;
- Diplomate : boosting Influence on any planet he's assigned (own or opponent's to provoke a local rebellion)

and so on.

Holy crap, I'm not alone anymore! You're the first person I've ever seen who actually also likes Star Wars: Rebellion!

To reply to the actual post...

1- Heroes would be interesting. I'm not sure how they'd implement them inot GC2, but it sounds like it at least has potential as a mod, if nothing else.

2- For better or for worse, multiplayer isn't happening anytime soon. Your idea for the time is neat, but I never played Rebellion multiplayer so I'm not sure how well it would work out.
