The New forums have arrived!

Hope you like them..

https://forums.galciv2.com/

I hang out on a lot of different websites and one of the things I have seen repeatedly come up is how people loathe the GalCiv2.com forums. They were very different in design from other forum systems.

In an attempt to try to improve that experience, we have re-written the underlying forum technology and re-designed the look to take some of the good points from other forums and our own technology and put them together.

Hope you like what you see.

Is this what I'm supposed to see?

What problems are you having? What browser/version number are you using?

Please note that users are REQUIRED to have JavaScript enabled. If they do not allow JavaScript to function for GalCiv2.com, the forums will not load properly and visually will not properly display. If you encounter this, please check your browsers settings for JavaScript.

In FireFox go to: Tools -> Options -> Content -> make sure 'Enable JavaScript' option is checked.
In Internet Explorer go to: Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Enable any Java related scripting options -- Recommended setting security settings to 'Medium' for best results.

If you are using FireFox, some have suggestion doing a Ctrl+F5 or a "shift-reload" to force FireFox to re-download the site instead of using cached data.
Similarly, IE users may try pressing Ctrl-F5 for a full reload of the page similar to FireFox, thus clearing local cached data.

Note, the forums are designed with the latest version of Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, or Netscape in mind. If you do not have the latest version of your browser installed, please update your version and try again.

Hmm, I use Netscape 8.1 and had to tell it to display like IE for this thread to look decent. I'll know about the forums in a min. Prior to doing that however the forums were basicly jumble for me. (Kind of like reading something with no puncation.)

By far the best improvement to the website in ages!!

Thanks for allowing the time and resources to do this

Woot, great news!

Now if only it would use Javascript compatible with Opera...

(But hey, the avatar upload bug is gone. Might have been fixed a while ago, but regardless, it IS gone NOW. Yay.)

Dark-Star,

Thank you for the CTRL+F5 tip for Firefox, it was all looking distorted before that. Now it looks really, really excellent. Now I just miss RSS integration.

Great work!

though would prefer posts being tagged by empire logo rather than individual logo. gives the empires more oomph.

Amazing, kudos on a job well done. How about new Metaverse forum icons however? And a wider, prettier selection?

Looks good; however, why are you writing your own forum software when there is excellent open source available?

1) Stardock only uses ASP.NET. There's a considerably smaller selection of good free software in ASP.NET as opposed to PHP.

2) Stardock does not want to have to deal with integrating third party updates, fixes, and security patches with their own modifications to whatever software is used.

3) The current system is already deeply integrated with Stardock's customer database, software registration system, etc. Plus the fact that it'd be a nightmare trying to port all the current forum data into some other format, since it's a completely custom-designed system.

I like the changes too.

Before I deleted the cache, the display was garbage but now it's ok (using IE 6.0... sorry, I am work and they do not want to switch to Firefox  )

One thing I miss: the info box on metaverse medals/awards does not pop up anymore, at least not on my computer.
