Tir - Quan = Ur - Quan?

Just wondering

Hi, was playing The Ur-Quan Masters (Freeware remake of Star Control II) and was wondering, Tir-Quan training in Galciv increces soldiering by 25%, And in SCII/UQM the Ur-Quan were the evil dominators in the galaxy.

So, Is the Tir-Quan training building based of Ur-Quan or have I gotten it completely wrong?

Prolly not, evil(or just misguided) space-caterpillars probably aren't very good at martial arts. I think it's probable that Tir-Quan just sounded suitably alien and exotic.

Yeah, But remember they did rebel against psychic domination by causing themselves excruciating pain to free themselves whilst smashing the living daylights out of mutant space toads.

I'm not sure of the original derivation, but if you look at USENET from a decade+ back, you'll find reference to the Tir-An/ Tir-Quan Training (or something like that) for GalCiv on OS/2. I think it might have originally given you a ship bonus or a couple of advanced fighter ships. It's been awhile.

Wow...

That certainly predates Star Control I (Circa 1990)

Thanks for clearing that little thing up, I guess that now there is the possibility of the Ur-Quan being based of Galciv (OS/2)!

And plus, Where do

Too complicated to explain. Better if you simply download The Ur-Quan Masters and help yourself to the yummiest chunk of gaming goodness ever made. That goes for the rest of you!

Hmm, now that I think of it, playing as the Ur-Quan in GC2 would be pretty awesome. If only there was a way to make it so that your text reads "Submit or die!" whenever you offer a peace treaty under favorable circumstances.

Slave shielding *could* be done by having 8 fleets focusing on defence, and position them around a planet.

1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 = fleets

5 = planet

Umm, yeah. But then it wouldn't really be a slave shield. It'd be a fleet shield, rather.

And further StarControl goodness:

Dregin and Korath both the same species. Drengin trying to enslave the universe, where Korath is trying to exterminate the universe. Now where have we heard that before?

I've only played star control i on my Sega Genesis. Remember thinking it was the greatest game that could ever be made. But the computer opponent was WAY to easy.

I love the references to the old games found in these forums.

Oh yeaaaaa. Wasn't it great making the computer controled Mycon ship shoot itself by using that little UFO looking ship(Ariou??)?
