Military/Diplomacy questions

Sorry for posting this in the general area, but I don't know if this is more of a military or diplomatic issue. I have some questions about when you and an ally are at war with a mutual enemy.

1.) Is there any way to coordinate your forces in a joint military operation? Example: I want to tell the Altarians: "The Terran 3rd fleet will rendevous with the Altarian 2nd Fleet in the Omicron Theta system in 4 turns, and from there we shall proceed together to the Drengin homeworld and attack it."

2.) Can I send a fleet to protect one of my ally's planets if it's under threat of invasion? Example: I detect a sizable Drengin task force heading for an Altarian frontier world, which it will reach in 4 turns. The nearest Altarian fleet is 6 turns away, but I have a fleet that's only 3 turns away. Can I dispatch my fleet to defend their colony from the Drengin, even if it means technically violating the Altarians' borders in order to do so? And finally, could that type of action improve relations with my ally?

3.) Can I liberate another civ's planet from an enemy and then return it to the original civ's control (whether they're allied with me or not)? And would doing so improve relations with that civ?

1) I don't think it is possible.

2) I don't know. What kind of defense are you thinking to? Attacking icoming fleet? patrolling in the sky of the planet?

3) Do you know that you can give planets?

Well, the ability to do both would be ideal. I imagine, however, that my ally probably wouldn't be very comfortable with me patrolling their space for them (I know I wouldn't). So I'd be happy if I could just send my fleet to their rescue if I see an enemy invasion fleet headed towards one of their planets.

Do you know that you can give planets?

Doh. [slaps self] Yes, I actually did know that, although I'd forgotten until you just reminded me.

A pity we can't coordinate military maneuvers with the AI players (although I had a feeling we couldn't even before I asked the question). It'd be a neat feature, but I admit I see at least two potential problems with implementing it: 1) it might be asking too much of the AI; and 2) it could potentially add a certain amount of micromanagement, and/or hardly be used at all.

There are no borders. You can simply attack the Drengin. I do not believe this will improve relations with your ally.

On your question #3, Peace Phoenix is correct, you can simply give the planet back via the diplomacy screen. This will definitely improve relations with that race unless you're at war with them. And if you are at war with them, you can ask for a peace treaty and throw in the planet to sweeten the deal.

Huh? From the screenshots I've seen, it looks like there are--I wouldn't have asked the question otherwise.

Read the manual - there's a PDF of an early version available through these forums (look for "User Manual Draft 3"). What you're seeing as borders are "influence zones", within which alien planets have a chance of being overcome by your cultural dominance (this is known as culture flipping).

Ah, gotcha. Thanks jmgarth; I think I'm going to go see if I can find that user manual now!
