Ship hardpoints, extra components.

Backwards tags, not symmetrical.

I've run into - often - small inconsistancies with the attachment points on ships. Often, one side seems perfect, and on the other side of the ship, a couple points are buried just beneath the hull - still visible - but it throws the whole design slightly off-kilter. Last night I ran into a ship with one backwards hardpoint, where it was facing forward on the other side.

I know it's purely asthetic, but I've actually scrapped designs and refused to use certain hulls because they just don't look right to me when I'm building on them. Often, I also find myself wishing for just one more hardpoint somewhere in the middle ... again, asthetic, but something I wanted... and on larger hulls, I'd certainly love to see more points for attachments. Smaller hulls I can understand as less versatile, but Large class ships seem to have as many points on them as Small ships, but are triple the size.

Sadly, I can't recall exactly which ones put me off the most, but I could try and find them if you wanted, and attempt to describe in detail what's off. I'm sure some sort of 'smoothing' is in the works before the final version, I just wanted to give an opinion.

Also I still have two extra components without icons in the selection window - the 5th and 6th from the bottom.

On the whole, though, I love the system for designing ships, and I love the new components you included in the latest Beta ... This game just keeps looking better the more I play it and get used to it!

It would be helpful perhaps if the red 'knobbles' to which you attached were more promenent perhaps.

Well, looking at this thread https://www.galciv2.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=162&AID=95560, it is possible that hard points size may be tweaked in a future release

ithe computer put my engines on backwards last beta version.

the computer put my engines on backwards last beta version.

Well, if it is backward, you can use an extra that switch direction

it waasn't available in that beta version.

Not sure to understand you: the components that swicth direction are available in the latest beta (beta 5).

Those hard point flippers are a great Idea. Three cheers to whoever came up with it!

Where is this switch? I can't find it and some engines are going on backwards on my ships too. I am on Beta 5 (0.80a).

Look at extra from 17 to 19. There are labelled as attachement modifier with a green and a red arrow

The only drawback to using the flippers seems to be that they actually add height to a hardpoint. Even the smallest one can add (barely noticable) height to the parts you then add. I'd almost prefer them to be 'invisible', just used to turn the hardpoint around. If you're as attentive to detail as I am, it can throw the look of a ship off kilter.

There also seems to be quite a few engines with 'glow' that faces forward by default, making these flippers essential for 'proper' engine mounting. I ended up just getting over it, seems like all the advanced engine designs call for backwards engineering.

I'm a litte ashamed to ask such a silly question, but .. what do I have to do to make the extras "stick" to the hull?

Line up the item on the little red hard points and left click. It can be a bit of a pain sometimes as the item can cover and blind you to the exact point but making your ships look like combined atmospheric / space attack craft is pretty neat imho.

A suggestion for adding componants that would make it much easier to do: How about making the item that you are sticking to the hull transparent? Then it would be a ghost that you attach, and so it would be a lot easier to see where the hard point is.

Ok, I admit to not having played the game so I am just going off what's said above..... but it sounds like a "snap to" function might be better to get the components to attach rather than having them go transparent. Then, dragging the component across to the Hull, the item tries to snap to hardpoints, leaving you to just move the mouse about then click when satisfied.

Am I missing something here?

Just to add fuel to the fire... I noted that some of the mass drivers mount backwards last night also.

Imagine:

#1: "Captain, fleet is in standard V awaiting orders to shoot all main rail guns."

CO: "Very well number one, commence shooting, salvo mode only, on main rail guns."

#1: "Commence shooting, salvo mode only, on main rail guns, aye."

#1: "Fire Control, commence shooting, salvo mode only, batteries one and two."

FCT: "Commence shooting, salvo mode only, batteries one and two, aye."
