Should the mini-map follow the focus of the main map?

The more playable this game gets the more important I find the information in the mini-map. One of the problems I have is that if I have the mini-map zoomed in (something I MUST do to see the stars for a gigantic galaxy -- stars don't really show at 100% zoom) when I switch from ship to ship and want to see what is behind the unexplored space around the ship, I have to dlddle with the mini-map to get it centered on the ship.

Even so, there are times when I need separate scrolling capability on the mini-map alone.

I can see where it would would require some changes in the UI to provide support for both, but right now, we don't have either without extensive diddling.

Reckon they should be linked.

Not sure they should be linked, there are times that I take advantage of the fact that they aren't, but at the very least, a key to center the minimap on the currently selected ship/planet, or even center it on the center of the main map would be really nice. Someone mentioned 'c' and yes that's nice, but that centers the main map, not the minimap.

I hate diddling. Please noodle with the code until is it properly tweaked. I'd like to see Jack's suggestion implemented.

Using a scroll mouse, zoom-in / zoom-out with the cursor over the minimap will center it nicely. That's 2 tiny movements with a finger of your hand on the mouse... Is that too much diddling/noodling ?
A shortcut key would need interaction via the keyboard... probably more work for the player than using the scroll mouse. From a usability viewpoint, I'd say no to having a key.

What Lucky Jack seems to want is more of a toggle option that will either make the minimap be slaved to the main map or remain static until the minimap itself is moved. That might be useful...

I would also like to see the ownership displays fixed on the mini-maps maximum zoom level.

That is exactly the diddling I am talking about. It is getting to be a very annoying task. A key stroke could easily replace it.

Part of the problem is that the mini-map can't be scrolled, at least, not in windowed mode. Perhaps if it could be scrolled with the direction keys if you first put have cursor over the mini-map then it would be more usable.

Accually, I find mouse actions to be more work and take longer than hot keys.

I also would like the ability to scroll the minimap around. This diddling is driving me nuts, too, especially since I use a touchpad on a laptop, not a scroll-wheel mouse.

Would be nice to have the ability to have a hot key as well as using the mouse wheel. But not at all required.
