At the moment I dont feel any real affiliation to my ships. It would be good if each ship had a commander or something that makes you feel a loss when a ship is destroyed. Especially if its your flag ship. MAybe if each ship has a Commander, Navigator, Weapons person, Pilot. All who have a name and gain experience. When you use fleets, each fleet could have a commander. Even be awarded medals, honour. AT the moment when a ship goes down I dont really feel a loss I just think lets build another.

Maybe Im asking to much

I think Civ 4 style promotions would be an awesome expansion to Gal Civ. Sure - its a blatant rip off of Civ 4, but like I am going to complain? A good idea is a good idea!

And Brad has said he doesn't mind copying good ideas..

I suspect this will show up eventually in the future. It's already partially there with ships gaining hitpoints over time. The biggest problem would be AI properly upgrading their designs.

Fleet commanders would introduce another interesting story element to Gal Civ 2. And without getting bogged down into a tactical game. Part of the fun in books like the Honor Harrington and The Stars at War series (both David Weber products) is that they focus on the big picture from the admiral's chair. Moo2 managed to accomplish this without slowing down the game or getting lost in a lot of micro-managing.

You could cap the number of commanders at something managable like 6. It's hard to see how this would compromise the game's strategic appeal and easy to recognize how it would add a lot of depth and gameplay.

I agree with someone's earlier post that the scale of combat we're talking about is most commonly analyzed in history through the commanders of the time (Nelson, Nimitz, Porter, Yamamoto).

Just imagine sending your fleets into action with the Drengin equivalent of James T. Kirk aboard the flagship.
