The end of the beta draws near..

What to expect

The end of the Galactic Civilizations II beta will be this month.  After that, it goes into strictly private testing.

It is during that point we take the feedback we've received and start incorporating it in as much as possible, polish things up, tweak game play, fix bugs, etc.

If it is anything like the GalCiv I beta, there will be loud posts insisting that the final game is doomed (anyone here remember the last GalCiv I public beta?)  needless to say, the transformation that occurs between the final game and release can be significant.

The area we are weakest on is in the area of compatibility testing. We could really use some feedback from users running on low-end systems or running on Windows 98, ME, or 2000.

There will be another beta -- beta 4D -- this next Thursday along with the posting of the draft user manual for the game.  At that point, it will be important for people to turn in their two cents on what they think needs to be tweaked, fixed, etc.

Stay tuned.

Well I have to say that I have had more enjoyment trying out this beta than I have had in any of the games I have purchased in the last 6 months including Civ 4 and AOE3.

I would be pretty happy with a STABILIZED version of what we are already testing, plus the stuff you already said is in development (like ship upgrades). Its looking really good right now, just buggy as hell (which is not unexpected).

As for posts that say "the final game is doomed", well you guys at Stardock better develop a thicker skin when it comes to criticism. People will bitch and moan about anything. Someone wins a million dollar lottery and they'll probably complain that they didn't get the check fast enough. I have a standard term that a work colleague and I use when we receive unconstructive feedback or unless whiny complaints from people: FUKKEM

(PS: I hope this one makes it past the censors)

Most certainly will stay tuned, it's not like I've been quiet about what I think needed to be tweaked

BTW, if we've made suggestions in the past that seem to have been ignored, should we raise them once more during the 4D beta phase, or assume that they've been ignored for a reason? I've got one serious pet peeve that none of the devs have commented on.

LOL and I just read two other threads you started ProudCanadian bitchin about Torians age 80 and using human calendars for the date.

I'll be sad to see beta end, and be happy when it's finally released. I'm sure Stardock will do alright by it's fans.

My concerns and thoughts I've already shared up to now. To my surprise, I even got some comments on the threads I started! Maybe you do realize it, whereas other companies/devs don't but this beta you do and keep in touch with your testers/fans/customers is revolutionary. It means a lot that you are listening / do read the forums *and* reply. While some people may 'lurk' forums(other companies) its a good feeling that you were heard at least.

I'll still help with the next beta. I think the game and you guys both [Stardock] have lots of potential and wish you well.

I would assume that Gal Civ 2, like its predecessor will be "moddable". Which overall increases its life span and its fun to see other's scenarios and changes (if not build your own ) . I have to say thats an important point if we're to start giving you final thoughts. Also ability to point to custom music directory or playlist and the game play those files .. major kudos

P.S. - > Who's doing the Strategy Guide? Care to spill the beans on Stardocks' next project ? Well after GC2 is released and all are rejoicing...

haha nice! I try to keep my bitching constructive and attempt to draw out other peoples' opinions on how the developers could do something better (hopefully without requiring too much effort). Way to call me out man!

Yes the game is moddable. Even now, as I have done slightly just to check.

When beta4D arrives and if there's something you think should be changed or modified, please feel free to speak up on it even if you previously brought it out.

ProudCanadian: I think we have pretty thick skins. I was just making people aware that we fully expect people to rail against the game because they will assume that the released game is going to essentially be just like the last beta but with bugs fixed or something.

A lot of the graphics and effects, and polish don't go in until the end.  For instance, the ship battle stuff is still stand-in stuff that will likely be heavily altered a lot (the weapons fire and shield effects and that kind of thing).  There's a LOT of music and multimedia still to go in and a lot of screens to polish and UI to do and hotkeys to implement and tooltips and fixing of planetary improvements so they upgrade right and so forth.

I hear ya. I made the comment that I did because I can tell from your posts that you're passionate about your work. It's not fair to criticize an artist before his artwork is complete.

Well, since noone else has said it.....

GalCiv2 is doomed! Doomed I say!

(You'll have to imagine me saying it with a thick Scottish brogue in the style of Private Fraser!)

Doomed is right. they cant even mess things up like Civ 4 did.

What do you mean by this? The technical aspects of the game and simply the game itself?

wow and i was impressed with that already

Me too.

Not that you are aimed at this OS, but I have had a lot of problems trying to run GalCiv2 on a Win2003 Server machine, though I suspect it to be video drivers as almost zero DirectX games work well on Server 2003...

I like the fleet battles. Can't wait to see the improvements though!

Although I do have a complaint about what happens when the AI attacks your star bases. Why can't I watch it blow up their fleets?

Yeah I called you out Proud Canadian, probably wouldn't though if I hadn't just read those other threads before this one.

It;s hard to tell 'tone' on reading posts, so based on other comments you've made. I can see your not ruthlessly trying to nitpick the game apart.

So I guess an apology is order. Sorry Proud Canadian.

Iam looking forward to play and mod GC2. keep up the good work Stardock!

Oh boy oh boy! GalCiv2 is nearing completion, Sword of the Stars should be coming out soon! There has never been a better time to be a space-based 4X TBS fan. Woo hoo!
Don't forget Space Empires V is coming out soon too.

Ooh yea. THough I must admit that SEIV gave me a headache. Could never quite get into it. However, part of that was the painfully slow combat of SEIV and SEV supposedly has real-time combat, hopefully allievating that little problem. But yea, we space-based TBS gamers have it good right now! (I guess God is making up for MOO3, eh?)

I think all of these games should be released via Stardock Central. Screw the big publishers. The space-based TBS makers ought to stick together, I say. After all, any REAL fan is going to snatch up all 3 games! (I know I will...though SEV is going to have make me believe before I buy...)

Will beta 4 D be the last public beta release???
There may be a 4E since there are a few features we still want to get in there.

haha! No worries. I actually thought you were joking before, so I wasn't offended.
