saving ship designs

havent seen this anywhere on the forum yet but while playing around with ship designs(mainly hulls and extra's) I had the idea that it would be a cool feature if you could save your unique designs and load them into new games.
That way if you come up with something you really like you can use it again in new games instead of in some cases vainly trying to reproduce your design.

That's an interesting idea. I would clarify this one even further:

* Want ability to save a ship design to an external file (separate from the Saved Game) for import to another game
* If you are playing a new game with the same ship-style set, you can load your saved ship design directly into the ship design screen
* If you do not have all the of the techs on the original saved ship, then the stuff you DO have will be loaded. This will at least load your extras onto the model, since they are always available
* If you do not have the pre-requisite hull size available yet, the load is not allowed and the user is informed why

This would also allow people in the GalCiv 2 community to exchange ship designs with each other!

I believe, though don't quote me, that this feature is planned.

I have already looked at the files containing the description of the ships provided by StarDock, and it looks like the technical support is already there.

In GC1 they provided for extensive customization of the game. I have to believe they will do the same for GC2.

Rly? Please tell me how I can transfer saved ship designs from one game to another?

I've been bummed out because I spend a huge amount of time making these ships and I can't reuse them after one game.

It is in the game....well at least this works for me,

use the custom race
make a ship
save
exit
make a new game using the same custom race
get to the same technological period
go to build ship and it should be there....i don't know if you can export these though.....that is a feature we really need what i dont understand though is that in the metaverse there is already a ship's area....eh who knows...

Kthx. Since I just started the game I've been playing with different custom races to see what fits my play style, so that's why I haven't been able to reuse my ship designs.

I found that I'd create a base ship design with no "meaningful "components (just eye candy), but if I start up another game with a different race (same hull design though) I can't pull up the saved design for the new game. Even if the ship were a small hull size and I already had that hull tech capability. Hopefully, this upcoming change will fix this.

I can't find the directory in the game where custom ships are saved. I was thinking a manual transfer of files.

Ha....the problem still exists for me, however.

Um..... it's already in the game..... long ago as you can see from the date of the last post before. Once you save a ship design in the shipyard it automatically becomes available to the same race in a future game. If you put a lot of weapons and engines on it, you will also need to research to equal levels of Hull size, weapons/defenses, engines and miniaturisation.... this is why it is better to build and save a barebones hull with no parts except jewellery on it, then you can just upgrade it in each game to put the relevent parts on.

Amazing, nine months old and it still holds relevance.

Not really, AxelKane is talking about something completely different. At present, I dont think that different races with the same Hull design share the same pool of custom ships. Although I could swear I have seen it happen before. There are arguments both ways here as I tend to have a theme for one race - another race with the same hull would have a different theme so the ships from prior games wouldnt fit.
