Bug - I think I've killed my installation

I'm double clicking my desktop icon, my screen goes black for a moment (as it usually did) but then it CTD's. It's done this on every attempt today. The only difference I can think of is that last night I installed and played, but since I shut down and booted up today it has stopped working. I get the same problem when running through SDC. Think I need to reinstall!

SmartException report has been emailed.

That sucks. Maybe you should try running the GalCiv II Config thing. You may get lucky and find that it is just a corrupt configuration file that is used on startup.

I have reinstalled and updated my graphics drivers, but I am still getting a CTD on startup. Emailed another exception report.

unbelievable. Mine is now doing the same thing. It worked fine last night, but I didn't reboot even once. Today GC2 crashes immediately - doesn't even make it to the main menu. NOT COOL!

UGH! I had to uninstall the game and multimedia, redownload it and reinstall. I have NO IDEA why the first install crapped out like that. Well, at least its working again.

After doing the uninstall/download/reinstall last night I was able to play for hours with no crashes at all. I wonder what got corrupted in my installation?

Cari_Elf has been working on the problem for me today and managed to fix it. Here's the workaround until it gets patched.

Try clearing out My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\temp, as well as any .shipclass files and the files in Data\ShipConfig with _UD_ in the name.

PC, did you by any chance upgrade a template ship design like the constructor? It might be unrelated but I found a bug (reported elsewhere) where I upgraded my constructor and it apparently overwrote the template design. When I started a new game the basic design was gone and my upgraded version was there instead. I shut down for the night and the next day I hit this CTD on startup problem.

Anything sound familiar?

Ouch. Yeah, that could corrupt things.  For now, try not to upgrade template designs, just build your own.  I think that I've upgraded user defined ships, but I'm not sure.  It's supposed to rename the upgraded template files so that it doesn't overwrite the file, but obviously something is going wrong.

Well I did two things:

1) Upgraded a couple of my OWN designs
2) Obsoleted a number of "build-in" ship templates so they would not show up in the list anymore

Maybe one of those did it.

WTF? There are still .shipcfg files from Beta 2 lingering around in this folder:

C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Installed\GalCiv2\Data\ShipCfg

I recognized the names while looking for the files with _UD_ in them. I can't believe those are still there even after I did an uninstall/reinstall. I guess the uninstaller doesn't clean out those folders. That cleanup issue should be addressed by the dev team. During the Beta phase, an uninstall should be VERY complete.

ProudCanadian, when you uninstalled did it ask you if you wanted to uninstall everything, including skins, etc?  I think that it leaves files that it doesn't recognize if you say yes to that dialog, but if you said no, I can have the guy who makes the installer/uninstaller to add those file types.

Astax, can you please e-mail me your debug.err file? [email protected]
