I figured it needed to be reposted since the #4 empire should have a current discussion thread active.

Yes I know. :)

Fun is where you find it.

Absolutely. :)

Why psych yourselves up to say Maso is no fun

Which is why I'm watching the succession game and I've previously read both the links you supplied. Good stuff by the way. :)

I don't think so. I'm sure the good Captain has had a slug or two or three of rum, as he is obviously a little tipsy. After all who would mistake our glorious Emperor Paguma for Queen Paguma? Only someone with imparied eyesight I'm sure :D

I'd be one heck of an ugly Queen! I'm just surprised to be #1 in in my own empire again. Several of you other guys had surpassed me by quite a bit. That was before I realized how you can easily beat masochistic AIs with cultural attacks. They simply can not detect them unless they are in one of their sectors. You may not realize it, but if you can find an empty sector that is surrounded by say 20 planets in adjacent sectors, you can turn all 20 of those planets with 6-7 party palaces, which they will not oppose you when you build. You just need to keep relations reasonable while you wait. I recommend trading with the races that like you the least and giving plenty of gifts to those that still don't like you. So working your economy will be very important. Just forgot about building or researching a military. It's unecessary in that strategy (in the early game).

If you don't believe me, try it in a small universe. It won't take long. Takes me about 1.5 hours for a small Masochistic win, and they're worth over 25,000 points.

Yeah... That's may next move I think. I've been reading up in the strats on Maso.

How do you do a cultural attack ?

I tried to dump a couple Starbases in Alien sectors and they did not like them and were quick enough to tell me.

Remove the Starbase or DIE !!

Which I can tell the Aliens to remove their Starbase from my space ?

You can demand it, they're unlikely to accept it. I have succesfully bought them before. Starbases are listed with the ships in the diplomatic screen.

Somewhere in an early patch, they added the ability for the AIs to detect a cultural attack if they have planets in the sector. However, you are probably aware, that your culture rating in a sector is based on what you have in that sector, and the adjacent sectors. So, since they can detect you in the sector, go to an adjacent, unoccupied sector. It will take more constructors because it takes longer to raise the culture of a sector from an adjacent one, but I find with 6 or 7 party palaces, I can turn adjacent sectors even when my planets are half a galaxy away and they have several heavy populated planets. Best (or worst) of all, is they seem completely oblivious to this attack since it occurs from an unoccupied sector.

Like I mentioned a couple days ago, in a recent game, I had control of only 1 sector in a medium game, and I managed to win that game more or less by choosing to culturally attack two unoccupied sectors that were adjacent to about 70% of the planets. This was a medium map so that's pretty easy. Once you control that many of the planets, you can pretty much win the game however you want. An easy way to do it, since you likely have constructors rolling off the assembly lines, is to simply eliminate most of the enemies the same way. I like to save the last sector to destroy with a military for the extra points. However, keep in mind, this is harder than it sounds. Often the AIs has a huge fleet by this time and you have nothing. Don't declare war until you've managed to build up a decent military. The good news is, the computer will now think you are much more powerful than him and your relations will likely be extremely good even though you just culturally attacked most of his planets. In fact, by this time you could probably choose and alliance victory, or get to it very quickly if you don't have the desire to finish him off with a military. Even the alliance victory is worth more points than a cultural victory I think.

I think this is a cheesy way to win, but it's worth quite a bit of points, and it's been known for a long time. I think it's a huge flaw in the AI and should be fixed. Even when I play not planning to use this flaw, it's hard not to fall back on it when things aren't going your way. :-)

Drop the starbases next to the Alien sectors .

I wonder what happened to the evil dudes.

I always get a kick when they drop by and make fun of Canada :D

Do you know what it is? Is it an average difficulty rating or something?
I think it is just a weight average on the type of game you have been playing.

Cool,

A few more Maso wins you may just a Maso Shield.

I think I am almost ready to give Maso a try. The last game I played was painfull, in more ways than one.

I spent most of the game groveling to the other races. :sniff!:

I do that every game... for awhile... Then later in the game, they grovel to me.

I agree. :) You'd be right at home in RB land, friend. Not a sales pitch, just an observation.

Personally, I have been observing a few voluntary rules to keep the game interesting. One of these is not stacking starbases. I don't stack trade bases, cultural bases or production bases. One per sector.

This means only one significant change vs unlimited bases, on the cultural front: possession of the influence mines makes ALL the difference. Unfortunately, there's a fat loophole in the rules, there, too -- big enough to fly a battleship through. The fact that you can buy starbases that are parked on resources means you can always acquire the influence resources through trade, even if you cannot do it through war or through poaching them between AI wars after someone else takes out the current owner or his base.

In the final analysis, if you can stay at peace, you can win by culture, even restricting yourself to one base per sector. Without that, what you said, just plop down a ton of them in one place and flip everything in sight, does indeed work.

Something else I don't do is turn off cultural victory. That allows for more points, too, turning a cultural win into a conquest win, worth more points.

My voluntary limits do not translate into propping up the game in this weak area, but they help some. At least the alliance win is a more meaningful, well balanced option (assuming you don't cheese the game by setting AI's to all the same alignment).

While there are currently a number of tricks and exploits and loopholes that can render Maso a lot easier, Stardock has previously taken some of these off the table, most notably majors paying cash. That at least renders Maso playable, for those of who could take the shirt right off the aliens' backs if they would allow it. Some other moves have gotten attention, like parking transports next to alien planets. The solutions don't always fix the problem, but they are trying. The 1 IP trick seems to be gone.

What Stardock cannot or does not fix in the exploit department, RB will eventually try to address through our house rules, at least for our players. We value bona fide challenges, not finding ways to win that take no effort and no risks. That kind of "fun" cannot entertain our players for long. As one of them put it, we're not interested in laboring for hours on end at some tedious task just to increase integers on a remote server (pad our score). :D If you can't lose and have nothing at stake, it's boring.

If Stardock ever does shut down the shortcuts, those reliant on them will have to adapt, and may struggle, while those of us who never came to rely on them will plug along without skipping a beat. I didn't use the 1 IP trick -- never even tried it. After it vanished, I started to rise through the ranks. Only players who can play without that are still standing.

CariElf says that several of these type of issues are on the to-do list. As players, we have to keep our expectations in line with what is doable on their end. They do have a passion for the game and its quality, and are paying attention to feedback, so I am content to wait and see what improvements they can make and I have pre-ordered my copy of the expansion.

Even when I play not planning to use this flaw, it's hard not to fall back on it when things aren't going your way.

Yeah. What they really need to do is to teach the AI how to use starbases -- party palaces, terror stars -- because right now the ONLY legitimate threats posed by the AI's are military, and even then they are not very sharp at invading in the late game.

As long as the AI poses ONLY a military threat, then if player can stay at peace (which does become difficult in the late game with soaring AI militaries, but is achievable) then winning becomes only a matter of time and tedium. Stardock has got to strengthen its AI a bit more, shore up the parts of the game where it performs poorly, if the gameplay is going to keep players engaged for years, rather than months.

On the sixth day God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said:

"Today I am going to create a land called Canada, it
will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall
have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and
eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass
and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs
over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life,
and rivers stocked with salmon."

God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so
as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these
inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the
most friendly people on the earth."

"But Lord," asked Gabriel "don't you think you are
being too generous to these Canadians?"

"Not really," replied God "just wait and see the
neighbors I am going to give them."

I think I have alittle more research before I can play MASO.

Here is how is went.

Some games I built trust with the Aliens but for some reason my planets would not stop flipping to the Aliens. The Aliens are not in the next sector no planets or Starbases so how they get a massive influence bonus on systems over a sector away ?

Other games one of the major races all of which like me should have good Alignment decides that Humanity makes better slaves than neighbours. Of course they are making overlords while I am lucky if I have a battleship.

The strategy of building starbases to win does not work for me. I had 10 starbases in one sector and around a sector and my systems flipped. :sniff!:

Oh well back to cakewalk...

One of the things I am thinking about trying is making habitable systems rare. May give me time to grow.

Pet peeve the higher the level the more minors seem to expand.
