Weapons Research - idea for cost of different tracks

I would like to see different costs associated with the 3 weapon (and defense) tracks: MISSILE, BEAM, PROJECTILE. What I'm suggesting is that one track is cheaper to advance in for early levels, but very expensive in the upper levels. Another is much more expensive early on, but comparitively cheaper in the upper levels. The third is "in the middle" for the whole tech tree. Maybe this:

EARLY TECH LEVELS:
----------------------------------
MISSILE: cheap advancement costs
PROJECTILE: medium advancement costs
BEAM: expensive advancement costs

MID TECH LEVELS:
-----------------------------
all 3 with medium advancement costs

HIGH TECH LEVELS:
--------------------------------
MISSILE: very expensive advancement costs
PROJECTILE: medium advancement costs
BEAM: medium/expensive advancement costs

This would force you to decide how to plan you long-term weapons development when spending money on your research. Do you want to do an early "Missile-rush", or plan for late-game "Beam Dominance".

This is a nice proposititon, further defining the 3 weapon genres, making them more unique all their own but Beam at higher levels should be very expensive and remove medium because when your laser technology is very advanced shouldn't you have Tachyon cannons, plasma dischargers, quantum/ion turrets stuff,
Projectile is fine&dandy with me Canadian.

I would think that Mass Drivers are the simplest weapons to design and produce, and would therefore cost less to enhance of all the three weapon categories.

Hhhhmmm. Mass drivers. They have to be able to move hugh objects (collected from asteroid fields, perhaps?) to hugh velocities in very short time periods. That shoulds like a very huge and expensive piece of hardware to me. And enhancements? What about collection methods, and storage methods? What about power supplies for the drivers themselves? Etc..

After reading that twice it clicked in my stone-age brain. Nice idea, I'm liking it. I suspect it will take a fair bit of play testing to balance it out though.

Lucky Jack, I think the "Mass Drivers" are actually more akin to railguns or coilguns. I believe I saw a screen of GC2 with the projectile attack power labelled "Gun".

On topic, I do like the idea though I also agree with Ugleb about the testing necessary to balance it...^_^

Well consistent prices in the beginning may lead to very similiar games with most cultures starting with the cheaper versions early game. What would be cool is additional abilities; e.g. collateral damage for missiles, damaging systems with lasers, extra planets damage with mass drivers.

What about the cost being race dependant? Bullets being cheaper for humans, for example?
