You already can name the planets in GC2. When you colonize it, set its name to what you want.

What seems to be missing, is setting the name on planets you do not own. Although I don't recall trying to rename a planet in GC2 after I've colonized it. Humm. I'll have to try that in my next game.

I just checked with CariElf on Stardock's chat facility for GalCiv. She says that we will see pre-assigned default names for the first solar system of each and every race re-introduced in a later beta.

So long as we can rename the planets at a later point, even if we previously accepted the default name, then that's all that matters. For instance, if I have a planet that has become developed to the point of being very critical to me, then I might rename it to something special to reflect its important, while I leave all the rest of the run-of-the-mill planets with their default names.

We're planning on letting you rename the planets, probably we'll have it work like ship renaming did in GC1: you'll double click on the planet name in the context area and it'll pop up the name planet dialog.

Some people would use them for notes to themselves. For both Unowned and Alien worlds. Imagine looking over an alien empire, and naming the planets "Target 1" "Last Attack" "Culture Bait". Or "Tor HQ", if you prefer. And it would be helpful to find the planet if you were going to give it away, or demand it as tribute. It's a lot easier to give the Tor your little class 15 world "Neo Tor" rather then "Wolf III" and not pick "Wolf II" by accident.

Renaming unowned would permit "Colonize me first!" and "Can wait til later" and "Good Foothold in Tor" and "Future Farmers of Terra" and "Future First Bank of Terra".

Perhaps have it enabled as a subtitle? Then, search that subtitle, (or if we'ere lucky, and the design team is up to it [adding on to all the other work they have], have buttons that you can set yourself. like pressing CTRL 1, would bring you to the Dreigen empire's homeworld) and...Presto! and i agree on the trading of planets, but perhaps have that planet "Primed" for trade, like having (on the trade planets screen) only the planets that you have primed.

Relic Robot, remember, you can call the aliens Pot, Spoon, and Fork. You are using a super-computer translator, so if you want to call the Yor's home world "Target 1", it doesn't matter. The aliens don't hear your words, just what their translator says your translator sent them. And names are wacko anyways. If you run one of my ex's girlfriend's name through a universal translator, it would come out as "Holy house belonging small god". There is no telling how that would turn out on the other side, translated into their local alien language. Think about it. "Grand Canyon" might be "Large Gulley" before translated back into an alien dialect. As long as the software knows that a particular sound set = Place A, it doesn't matter what label you stick on it.

And resteraunts often rename famous dishes.
