i noticed there is no menu for the science ships to auto explore or am i just missing something here?

Beta 1 has only a few of the features. Other features will come with later Beta stages. The autoexplore feature in GC1 was so popular that I can't imagine GC2 not having something very much like it (perhaps better in some way).

Select the flagship and hit the "A" key on the keyboard. This works for any ship with survey capabilities.

Thx for the auto explore tip. I was wondering why that function was not available. Using the "A" key will make game play alot more interesting.
