Sometime between now and midnight EST the beta of Galactic Civilizations II will be available via Stardock Central. 

Those of you who have pre-ordered the game will receive an email with the appropriate download links and serial number to install it.

only if they pay like the rest of us who pre-ordered.

There arent any free beta's, if you pay, you get to test the game, put in your 2 cents as well as get the finished game at the end of the testing phase.

I don't see it listed... I have "show pre-release versions" checked in SD Central, and I tried refreshing. Is it somewhere besides the games menu?

Anyone who's gotten the email with your info and still can't see the game, please email [email protected] the login.txt file from your SDCentral directory (DO NOT post it here). The 2 people who've already done so had their info under 2 slightly different accounts, so SDC didn't see the GC2 order quite right. I can kick that, if that's your issue.

Indeed!! but is it not logical, in a sense that by giving the beta out to the public, you will not only drive people mad into buying your product but you also get alot more feedback.

Well, they are getting currently feedback. I am not sure if they need more . And economically, it makes sense to open beta to whose who are supporting Stardock, either by having preordered or by having an active Totalgaming.net account. Don't forget that it is an open beta, without any Non-Disclosure Agreement. If we don't like the game, we can tell it.

Easy: it could be summarize as treasury management. Since you don't know how long the development will take, what what will be the overall cost, you need to ensure that:
- preorder won't be cancelled (I assume that preorder will be charged when the game will be ready)
- have a way to have income going into your treasury. Opening beta to Totalgaming.net users allow this, since the open beta + all available games in Totalgamin.net may be a good incentive to get an active totalgaming/net account

I recall Brad saying somewhere that money from pre-orders takes the place of advances paid by publishers for Stardock, which allows them to develope games independently.

Pre-orders are charged when they are sent their serial numbers for the product. I was charged the day the first Beta was released. So Star Dock has my money already for GC2.

I recall Brad saying that his company funds new work on the existing revenue streams. Any advanced money, such as pre-orders, is just a bonus to the company, and is not something that he ever plans on, as it is too unpredictable to include in any project budgetary planning.
