Diffuculty WAY up in AP????

Stardock Forums
Ok,
now I dont claim to be the best GalCiv player ever. However, I did used to be able to at least play it and stay competitive... That was before I downloaded the latest and greatest AP.
Since then, I have been summarily and soundly ganged up on and beaten to the point where this game is no longer fun. I am trying with all races turned on and half of them at Bright for an overall level of Challenging. I USED to play challenging and would have a chance. Now, it doesnt seem to matter how good my starting position is, EVERY SINGLE game ends up with me being attacked by one or more vastly superior enemies probably an hour into the game.
Short of sending me over to the strategies forum (no help there) or turn down the AI difficulty, any ideas? Has the difficulty been raised? It seems as though the aliens are really doing a grand job of cheating in this latest build to get so far ahead (sorry, I know they dont cheat, but giving them "bonuses" amounts to the same thing, right????)
any insight would be appreciated.
