GalCiv2 Concerns

GalCiv2 Concerns

I just wanted to say that even though I have never played Galactic Civilizations it looks like GalCiv2 has some serious potential. With that said the reason I am coming here and posting this is because I do have some concerns. I do feel strongly that multiplayer should be included in the game design from the ground up and working out of the box. If I may make another multiplayer suggestion aswell, GalCiv2 MUST have simultaneous turns and also a save function that works. As much as I enjoy learning with the single player elements the replay value for me comes with real people. With GalCiv2 looking so good and fans of the genre still waiting for a true Moo2 replacement, Stardock has a good opportunity here. I'm sure GalCiv2 will be a good game but, if it shipped with a solid stable multiplayer component it has the potential to be a great game, even a classic.

Best of wishes, Zargrim

reat experience.  If the number of pre-orders is high enough to justify the development time, you will get multiplayer.

lic. I wouldn't be surprised if the # of people who would pre-order a multiplayer version of GalCiv, even if it were extremely inexpensive were less than 1,000.

mmercially viable for the time being.

tually makes it sound better for multiplayer purposes but sounds kind of limited for single player. Hopefully you guys will release a demo and hopefully the game does well so that eventually we'll get some multiplayer support.

ould be pressuring Brad to hurry up with that project.

t necessary to point out some obvious logic flaws to your repeated assertions of the demand for singleplay over multiplay.

And for the record, I can't stand RTS games.

nswers. This group has loyalty to the developers, and I think we try to help them as we can, where else can Stardock go to get reliable feedback like that?

icitly said that Multiplayer fans will get their fair shot, and that's exactly what will happen. So no need to get upset, no?

facet of the genre at the moment, might as well pick their brains eh?

y turn based strategy games but usually only if they have multi and chances are we will all end up buying it if it's good.

customer base to sell a MP expansion. Then you'll get your MP... and the next rev of GC will probably have MP to start with.

and where ressources where devoted to ensure a good MP experience. And I think to remember that Brad wasn't sure if MP a good move for Political Machine, even if it was obvious at design time that MP should be implemented for this game

call him stating it did break even or better.

multiplayer add-on. And you can be assured that we will make it public how many pre-orders for it we're getting for that multiplayer add-on.

Wow Stellar Frontier looks harcore Surprisingly it still looks pretty good from the screenshots. Sadly I have no idea where I was when Stellar Frontier was released. Maybe I was obsessed with DOOM or Quake or at the time. It doesn't say on the website what year it was released but I would have probably liked it.

I am curious though why the costs of developing a multiplayer game is so high these days? Is it the complexity of the games themselves that create this huge overhead with multiplayer? I mean I can understand why MMOG are so expensive and shooters require very very good network code but turn based strategy games?

On another note what about hotseat play? I just had the pleasure of playing playing Dai Senryaku VII and despite the much longer turns playing with 2 players or more it was definantly alot funner playing with a friend. In Dai Senryaku I can see how simutaneous turns would definantly not work. In Galciv2 if a multiplayer expansion or patch ever becomes available would it be capable of supporting simultaneous turns or based on game mechanics would it remain classic turn based strategy?

Anyways lots of great info on GalCiv2 and Stardock. The last beta screen posted makes me drool. I would like to see some 1024x768x32 shots though not just insanely high res for those with uber video cards

And multiplayer, as a feature, is a very very expensive feature to put in. It's more effort to put in multiplayer, in terms of cost, than it has cost to put in ship design and play as any race COMBINED.
And so when we put together our budgets, the question boils down to: Would users prefer to have multiplayer or would they wish to have ship design + play as any race.
We do plan to have a multiplayer add-on. And you can be assured that we will make it public how many pre-orders for it we're getting for that multiplayer add-on.

If that doesn't underscore it I don't know what does.

I knew multiplayer was alot of work, but I didn't realise it was quite THAT much work! It's nice to know that stardock has some solid experience of building multiplayer games in the past though, and those player counts are pretty sobering. 30 players online together at most really is not much.
