I've always thought that this online card game "Star Chamber" might have stolen some elements from GalCiv, but then again anything in the TBS space genre is going to have so many similarities it's kind of ridiculous to talk about copying.

indeed i just played this game "stars" and the guy mouse on the link to the other forums i gave you he said it was almost copied exactly like stars except for the interface ect. wow this guy has no idea.

It's worth noting that the original galciv came out on OS/2 in 1995 iirc.

As something of a galactic conquering connesewer, I hafta say Stars is extremely different from GalCiv. Heck, I don't recall any of this "diplomacy" stuff in Stars atall! :p

UnderLord,
I followed that link and checked out the debate. I don't think there is any way to 'win' against that guy, he's got his head stuffed up his a$$. I've played both games and while they are of the same genre, thats about far as it goes.

I still have the game "Stars!". Great game but there is NO diplomacy in the single player game...only MP. It's a pretty intricate game but I really don't think I can compare GalCiv and Stars!...there are more differences than similarities.

Since this guys speak about Stars! Why not remind him about Master of Orion (the first one) and VGA Planets.
I know, they are old. But I think to remember that they were olders than Stars!.

With his logic, Stars! is a ripoff MOO or VGA Planets.

I agree also that it looks like flame/troll bait.

I'll chime in here -- having played Stars! extensively myself, there is absolutely no similarity between Galactic Civilizations and Stars! beyond the general space-theme.

Really. None. Zip, Zilch, Nada.

Name a feature in GalCiv, and if it's in Stars! it doesn't work the same way.

Stars! has fleet based combat.
GalCiv has Civilization style combat.. one unit at a time.

Stars! you DESIGN your own ships.
GalCiv has fixed design ships, ala Civilization (again)

Stars! you dont build stuff on your planets other than generic factories / mines / etc.
GalCiv you build many different things on the planets similar to Civilizations cities... and MOO2.

While the interfaces may LOOK similar, they are different in many ways. I mean, come on, there are only so many ways to present information in Windozes. :)

No, GalCiv is not by any means a rip off of Stars!.. Stars! IS very similar to VGA Planets though.. better but similar enough.

I have played Stars!, VGA Planets, GalCiv and many other space TBS games... its my favorite genre of game in fact so I feel somewhat qualified to make these comments at least.

Stars! is very old.. as PC games go and the original programmers were just your typical garage software studio.. it was a labor of love for sure and an amazing game in its time. But it suffers from a lot of balance problems. There are only a few ways to be competitive in the E-mail multiplayer games so you better know your stuff or you will lose badly.

Pirate Rob: Perhaps you should Join the empire of Pirates... G.R.O.S.S. I took a look at the thread underlord. That Mouse guy is pretty much trolling.

I am one that believes there are truly only about 10 different video games out there and everything is just variation on the theme.

1. TBS Civ
2. TBS space game
3. First person shoot em up
4. Diety combat (warcraft, etc
5. Maze games
6. Fight games (Tekken, Mortal Combat)
etc.

But it does not follow that one game, merely because it is in the same category, is a complete rip off of the other. Though Every friggin single Westwood diety combat game seemed a rip-off of every other Westwood game. I still remember the one that advertised it had the C and C engine in it (emporer, battle for Dune)....Right then I knew I should leave it on the shelf. But it was only 10 bux. I found out why. No wonder Westwood went belly up.

Hmmm. I played Stars! quite a bit in the past (still have it in fact). So I'll expand a bit on Rob's points above. Feed 'em to the troll if you like.

1. Planets
Stars: Each star has one planet, with habitability based on Gravity/Temperature/Radiation levels.

GalCiv: Multiple Planets per star, with habitability based on PQ level.

2. Species
Stars: All species including your own are totally customizable.

GalCiv: You are always Human, and the Aliens are always the same species (Minors will vary). You can however customize your abilities and political party (and the AI will customize its settings too).

3. Ships
Stars: Each ship is custom designed by the user. Ships can be formed into fleets and combat takes the fleets into account.

GalCiv: Ships are all predesigned and become available with the research of certain technologies. You can make fleets, but they function the same as stacked units in Civ (Attacking units fight the strongest one in the stack, then the next strongest, etc, until it or the stack is destroyed).

4. Research
Stars: User sets percentage of total income to contribute to research, and which category to put this money into. Research then advances through generic levels of that category, with new technologies becoming available at certain levels.

GalCiv: User sets percentae of empire spending to contribute to research, and chooses a specific technology to put this money into. There are varying branches of each category and many interconnected prerequisites. User can also achieve victory by researching an ultimate technology at the very end of the tech tree.

5. Resources
Stars: User can build mines on planets to increase production of three core resources, and uninhabited planets can be remotely mined by special ships. these resources can then be moved via freighters.

GalCiv: Aside from special resources located around the glactic map (more on that later), there are no resources. Production is based upon alotted military or social spending at the empire level, which is divided among planets based on population and any production bonuses provided by planetary imporvments.

6. Starbases
Stars: One starbase may be built per planet. The starbase serves as planetary defense, shipyard (depending on starbase type and size), fast transportation (via stargate to another starbase with a gate), and mass driver (interplanetary combat or resource transport).

GalCiv: Starbases may be built anywhere on the galactic map. They can then be fitted with various modules which boost abilities such as trade income, influence, stats of nearby ships, production on nearby planets, etc. If built on a special resource, there are modules avilable to increase the empire-wide bonus provided by it. The starbase can also be upgraded into a Terror Star, which gives it mobility and the ability to actually destroy inhabited star systems. User can achieve victory by making his influence the dominant one in the entire galaxy.

7. Planetary Improvements
Stars: Only generic improvements such as factories, mines, defenses, scanners, etc. can be built. Alternatively, the planet can build any ships or starbases (new starbases will replace a preexisitng one at that planet) that you have designed.

GalCiv: Many varying improvements are available. Each provides bonuses to certain local abilities such as production, morale, planet quality, and influence, in exchange for a monthly maintenance cost. User can build ships on the planet at the same time as improvements, and no shipyard is required.

8. Diplomacy
Stars: User pretty much cannot negotiate with AI players.

GalCiv: User maintains a relationship of various closeness with each species he has encountered. He can also initiate trades with the AI (and the AI can initiate trades with him) which may involve money, influence, planets, technologies, ships, starbases, and trade goods. User can also ally with AIs after fostering a strong friendship and researching the appropriate technologies. User can also acieve victory by allying all Major species.

9. Trade
Stars: User cannot trade with AIs, except for the option to offer ships full of resources to random travelling traders who will give new ships or technology in exchange.

GalCiv: User can construct freighters to establish trade routes with AIs (both Major and Minor species). These trade routes them provide income to both involved players and increase relations between them.

There's more than that, but that's all I can think of at the moment, and I've got other things to do. Still, this should help put the troll in his place. As is, it's pretty obvious that he hasn't played EITHER game very much at all :)

LMAO. The only one I've never played is Red Alert 2. That's because it isn't down to 10 bux yet. And that's about what it's going to be worth given their track record.

Actually Red Alert 2 was much better than a lot of the crap they put out around the same time. In fact, I just reinstalled it and teh expansion and played through them just a couple months ago. :)

I don't know, I thought Red Alert 2 was one of the easiest games I have ever played. Any C&C where I can beat the entire single player campaign in one sitting is pretty pathetic.

Try changing the difficulty level :P

Although I have to admit, it's pretty sad that if you can build a few chrono legionaires in the last Allied mission, you've already won. Not exactly a big challenging grand finale for the game eh?
yeah i played RA2 online (but only against AI's so in away not really online) and it was fun but hard as the AI beat the crap outta me the first time but i won in the end! muwah muwahahaha!

My favorite of the Westwoods was Red alert 1, the Russians. That woman that poisoned Stalan was classic... HEHE. She was my favorite Character. The Allied movies were lame. The Tiberian Sun Movies were pretty lame too on both sides.
