is it normaly for the larger maps to be really slow?

If you mean the game itself slows down, then yes on older computers it's fairly common, on newer computers though it shouldn't.

the time to save a game goes up quite a bit, so if you have autosave on for every turn... well, that's the biggest time eater right there
