Ship Design / Refit

Requested Features

Hello all. There doesn't seem to be a "search" function to these forums - at least that I can find - so please forgive me if this has already been discussed. Now that we know Gal Civ 2 will make it possible to design our own ships, which I'm totally jazzed about, I would like to submit for consideration the inclusion of a related feature - that being the ability to refit an older ship with a newer design for the same size / class of ship, as in Master of Orion 2.

Those of you who have played MOO2 may recall how it was great that our ship crew's gained experience, but that overtime their ship became obsolete, making crew experience irrelevant. To remedy this, a later patch included the ability to refit that older ship with a newer design, allowing you to convert an older ship into a newer ship, for a fraction of the cost, and to keep your experience crew. That was a stroke of genius, in my opinion, and made for great fun.

Of course, I'm making the assumption in all of this that we will be able to save a certain number (perhaps unlimited?) of ship designs to allow for quick reuse in the building and refitting of ships.

So, what does everyone else think?

designs (which you can upgrade later)

ll be significantly lower than building an entirely new ship. Has this been cofirmed?

Thanks for your reply.

Yep I'd like to know if they will have a refit feature.

instead of putting your high tech onto your ships in the first place.

IIRC, the initial cost to refit will be the cost of the new unit - the cost of the old unit.
Refitting will be done in a SMAC fashion of selecting the old design and selecting "upgrade".

Perhaps there could be some minor fee for adaptation. Some fixed cost per unit or such.
You do not exactly morph a F14 into a F16 hehe

ably do away with any refit fees and attribute it to fun factor

I think you will have to allow Reits also to be on the same class of ships -

You cant refit a fighter to be a battleship.

ges to the material of the hulls. Perhaps treat them like any other component for fun sake. In reality a change to the entire hull would just mean building a new ship.

s, you just like that little frigate that has withstood so much that it shouldn't have, after all.

One thing i want to know is if the game will come with a 3d design program for the ship hulls or if yo have to get a program like that your self or if there are so many different hulls with the game you don't need to design them yourself.

designs for the game

Even if you don't have a 3D design program, you can still give your ships individual looks by putting "bling" on them (as Star Pilot described).

I never knew you could add "bling" to your ship. I can't wait to design some things to make my ships look unique.

e prepared to drool. More info in the Journals. Worth digging through if you've missed all the Ship Design talk and various pics posted by the developers.
