Fundamentalists Event - It's Broken

Fundamentalists Event - It's Broken

The idea of a new minor race popping up by overthrowing the yoke of evil empires on a few planets is a cool idea. In principle, I like it, I welcome it. In practice, though, it often destroys my games.

The event is way unbalanced, at times beyond absurd. I have seen the Fundies ovethrow ENTIRE empires. They have never completely wiped out my empire, but they have taken 80% of my planets on the worst occasions. This is out of control. The implementation of this event is broken.

Who's idea of fun is this anyway? If I want to let a single roll of the dice determine the outcome of my game, I would go and play monopoly. This is supposed to be a strategy game, and that it is, except when certain way-too-powerful events steamroll over the game balance. Then it's reduced to a dice throw. Blah.

It doesn't matter whether I benefit or suffer from this event. I've come to despise it. The Draginol event, with ONE system going rogue, that's balanced. And you get a warning! The Dread Lords... if you've had enough espionage spending, you can avoid it. The Fundies just up and strike, totally at random, no warning, no redemption, no way to protect yourself if you are evil, no way to limit the damage. And when playing as good, I don't want to be handed a cheese victory on a silver platter either. I want to play the game!

SUGGESTED FIX:

The fundamentalists should be limited to a maximum number of systems taken over per empire, tied to map size and/or fertility settings.

Count "Abundant" as +1 map size.
Count "Normal" habitability as the default.
Count "Occasional" and "Uncommon" as -1 map size.
Count "Rare" as -2 map size.

Then cap the Fundies as follows:

Small or lower: Maximum 1 system per Evil empire to the Fundies.
Medium or Large: Maximum 2 systems lost per empire.
Huge: Maximum 3 systems lost per empire.
Gigantic: Maximum 4 systems lost per empire.
Gigantic with Abundant fertility, max 5 systems lost.

Never allow the Fundies to take over more than half of any empire, including no worlds taken over if an empire has only one system.

Unless and until this event is brought under control in its scope, I will consider it a blight on the game design, a bug to be corrected by ignoring it: reloading a saved game to undo it. I normally frown on reloading to undo random events and strategic mistakes, but I've had it with the Fundies wrecking my games. My strategy and my choices should be the dominant factor in every game of GalCiv, not some out of control roll of the dice.

Thank you for tuning in to this rant. Have a nice day. :)

Too much text... brain boggles down... argument evaporating... knows Sirian is wrong but can't bring himself to prove it... too much energy...

must speak like this... now going away... away... away...

Looks like the thread should have been killed sooner, none of the sides seem to hear the others. Just a vent fest. It was interesting to see people assume others are lying if they've never seen what was claimed. (And then go the step further to publicly point fingers)

Evil_Elvis pauses to recalculate credibility and morality score... finds "chaotic good" more chaotic than previously beleived... ;p

Sirian,

I agree.
I've only played two times so far, so I am not into the details of game mechanics and likelyhood of any events happening, etc.
But the first game ever I played I got shattered, playing on "easy", trying to be good (I managed "neutral") and they came out of nowhere with enless supply of money and tech an blew me away. Just like that (they were the only ones with battleship technology... and *lots* of battleships, starting off with a dozen stolen planets... very funny)
Second time I played I was "good" (or say "lucky"?) enough, they left me alone but they blew away the others. I won.
Great.
Not.
I agree with you.
This is not a suitable event for a strategic game, but in effect arbitrary, random and destructive.

I haven't had any problems with the Fundies, although that's probably because I play good most of the time. One of the few games where I played evil they took a couple of my planets, but I didn't have any problems getting them back.

I do see your point though Sirian and from what you have posted (and the fact that you took the time to post in the first place) it is obvious that this is diminishing your enjoyment of this great game.

The Fundies event that broke the camel's back and led me to post this rant took place when my entire civ was parked on 100% morale. Seven systems, fourteen planets, went to the Fundies. They all had 100% morale, because ALL of my planets had 100% morale. I had every single morale trade good in the game, plus morale bonus picks, plus three morale resources mined by starbases. I had over +300% morale boost. Why, then, did the Fundies get any of my worlds if they only hit low morale?

I responded as did pontius, to this claim. It seemed so far fetched it reminds of 'I caught a fish this big' you know and every time you re-tell the story the fish gets bigger.

If you want to take this as an accusation of lying, an attack, a threat and a crime against humanity, good for you. Though restrict the "accusation" to the comment only. The rest of your arguement has potentially valid points, though the method of rebuttal seems to disregard everyone elses theory's and suggestions. Perhaps you can take that in account if you reply to this post.

As for my other comments yes I am entitled to add my experience, and by suggesting that I am not always 'good' at all various stages of the game I tried to get across that in my experience the event did not break the game.

Accusations of lying are serious business. I advise you not to toss them around so lightly. You place your own credibility on the line in attacking mine. Be a good idea to make darn sure you've got it right before taking that step.

My own credibility is not on the line, I'm entitled to voice my opinion thank you and I'm entitled to question yours. However with that clever little ruse you've still not yet disproved it wasn't an over embellishment and I'm still yet to prove it. With that in mind lets ignore each others claims here and restrict the arguement to the fact that in some circumstances the event 'could' be game breaking. I have no doubt in my mind that it 'could' be given the right circumstances, but again from my experience I have not seen this to be the case.

In summing up I am still yet to see this to be a game breaking event. My sincerest apologies if this damaged you in any way from this post or the last it was not my intent.

edited to make sure that I made sense this time ;)

Back to fundies: I believed the number of systems lost was based on how evil you are.
End of quote

I can assure you that isn't the case. It's not precisely what moral your planet appears to have either as has been stated 100% moral is no assurance your worlds won't go all 'hippie flowers' on you when the fundies event strikes. So whats the trigger exactly? I must say a few of my games have been ruined outright by this event (thank godness for the auto save feature) but I'll get to that later . . .

As far as I can see it's actually your relationship with any good alignment AIs (Major or Minor) in the galaxy in addition to each planets apparent moral (note also your actual popularity in the galaxy and to your own people I'm certain are a factor in the events mechanics) . . . the last game played I quickly became absolute evil through collinization events (the slavery ones score pretty highly, can't understand why . . . jk) . . .

Halfway through the game the fundies took everything (and I mean everything on a Huge Map!) but that only included 'one of my systems. Game over (I could of gifted a planet or two to an ally but I've been down that road before). At the time this happened one of the AIs was pretty much playing Neutral . . .

A whole galaxy can't collectively revolt in an instant . . . thats ridiculous, this event is imho a little bit odd.

Just my 2bcs worth,

Interesting... I can actually see something in this, I always try to keep myself friendly with everyone until I want to attack. Perhaps in my games I am acting as a shield for the AIs?.

I just wish they'd take more in my games, so far they are pretty much a non-event for me.
I've just started playing against all evil empires, so far 3 games have had 3 fundies events, each time taking a planet from the least powerful empire (well the yor at least). Perhaps I'll get lucky and be at war with some empires next time and see if more the fundies get more.

I pretty sure your political parties popularity (and your sytem of government) have something to do with it too . . . Its all conjecture until someone from stardock spells it out but its fun hypoyhesising, hopotosisizing, hipopothamsing . . . doh! You know what I mean . . . :notsure:

Until now I never had a fundie event I couldnt handle. They once took my main system (plus 50% of the rest; on Maso), but I managed to get it all back. So I cant verify that the fundie event is imbalanced.

Just a little off topic (alot actually) . . . but in some games I've had the number of minors proliferate so much that I had to scroll through them in the diplomacy screen (compared to the easy access and position of diplomatic standing for the Majors) it's cumbersome.

As the Minors become more powerful (as a result of the recent updates) do you think it might be time they had a common screen similar to the 5 principle AI Majors screen of thier own? Just something on my Christmas wish list . . . I could send you a mock-up of the layout? :)

that would be sweet! I hate the way when I close the dialog window with a minor it kicks back to the first minor on the list instead of the minor I was on...

I'd like it EXACTLY like the majors, but of course because there can be more it'll have to scroll. hmmmm... OR be significantly shrunken.... I like that better, seeing all at once.

SD-
implement by wednesday please.
