KI races oversee entire map?

i know that the KI has the stats of all planets in the galaxy, but since my flagship recently was constantly chased by slower drengin frigates through quite the whole galaxy until i amassed a fleet and killed them, i now wonder whether they even have some sort of "fog of war"?
probably some kind of a noob-question, but i couldnt find the answer in faqs or manuals. :p

Yes, the AI basically sees eveything all the time from the very beginning. :notsure:

even ships and starbases?

No. If you read the Phoenix description, or cloaking, it explains that ships "lock" their targets and follow them even into fog of war, except if the ships have cloaking (like phoenix ship). So survey ships can be found in the fog of war, but phoenices can't.
And I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing.

Yes, I believe that is correct. Once one of your ships fall into their sensor range, it can be chased to the edge of the galaxy and back again. This can be used to certain advantages if the player has even a slight speed advantage and some patience, though. "Why, lookie here! The Drengin are at war with me and hate the Altarians as well. There happens to be an Altarian starbase nearby. Let's just line this Drengin ship chasing me up just right and either it will die or take out the base. Neat!" :D

so much for the supreme KI. :)
the drengin btw used to chase my flagship with several frigates, but they were kinda spread over a few lightyears so i could take them out one by one...

hmm i dont like the fact that you have to play incredible or so in order to get a real intelligent KI. on lower levels, they should be just as smart and get more economy penalties instead.

I disagree. Biasing economy to provide penalties/bonuses is something which is, in my opinion, a last resort. I'd rather hace more tactics/strategies available to harder level ai than bonuses to compensate their being dumb. Stardock does both, and some people (including me) asked that there should be separate levels, one for cleverness and one for econ bonuses, but Stardock preferred to keep it simple with a unified difficulty scale.

The only thing you get addicted to around here is mountain dew or coffee to keep playing one more turn before I go to bed!

Speak for yourself! Some of us run better on booze power than by being hopped up on sugar or caffeine. At least when it comes to playing "one more turn" until the wee hours of the morning.

hmm another question:
starbase-resources (except influence) are said to be useful for planets in the same sector only.
in the games i've been playing so far, most resources were in sectors without any habitable planet, but KI races nevertheless love to build small stations onto each single resource on the entire map.

are they just damn stupid, or am i? :)

A starbase that's built on a resource can mine that resource for the benefit of its Entire Civilization. If you build a base on a Military resource it affects every ship in your fleet, an Economy resource improves every planet you own, etc.

Any other modules besides mining only affect the sector that the starbase is in. Trade bonuses, production bonuses, ship-attack bonuses all apply only to one sector.

So the aliens are quite rightly building starbases on resources to get the benefits of those resources civilization-wide.

well, thx a lot...
i've made some test runs and checked my empire research bonus before (26%) and after (26%) taking a technology resource... guess the update simply takes a turn to take effect or so.

but what i dont like are the random starting positions. in one game, i can be surrounded by PQ20 worlds - in the next game i am surrounded by empty white stars, drengin and yor. :)
makes you restart your game over and over again until you get a decent position, but this sucks as well.

Having a start close to a number of majors is not a bad start. Rush to get transports, and take the fockers out very early in the game. Expand through conquest. You won't have to deal with them later on either. Trade those techs for the transport and defender he has in orbit, and u-turn them. Viola' no more Yor.
