OH WOW! A Derek Smart flame! This brings back memories...I think I've seen Derek Smart flames on forums for about ten years now! Slapbone - I think you're right not to trust him! LOL

Sorry I know this probably isn't the place but its easier to poke a little fun at him here than on his own site

One thing can be said about his previous "Space Sim" ventures though...they had a lot of "space".

If you ever find yourself accidentally transported into the Star Trek Evil Mirror Universe and did a google on "Brad Wardell and Galactic Civilizations" you would end up with "Derek Smart and Battlecruiser".

Of course you would also find a gay version Major Kira in a tight leather catsuit, so that's a pretty good trade-off in my opinion.

Slapbone - don't apologise! It just brought back memories of the old days in the Usenet forums...and I DO mean years ago - you'd have to put on your flame-resistant suit before logging on. I thought the guy would simply fade away, and certainly never considered actually spending MONEY on his stuff LOL

You know I've always wanted to try one of those battlecruiser titles. Despite your comments, they look good ta me.

Well... I've tried a few, being an Elite fan. As has been said before, they have a lot of "space". In a "space sim" you spend most of your time travelling... you know, watching the stars go by (screensaver). It might be your sort of thing if that's ok by you. I used to like flight sims, which were primarily screen savers of clouds and scenary go by once you are in the air...

Try a demo of it if you can find one. If you like that, go buy the game. That's what I would advise. Different people like different things, and it might just be the perfect (surely, second perfect game, after GalCiv ) for you.

You can get them pretty cheap these days.

I did try BattleCrusier 3000 AD for a while. Some things about the interface I really loved. But it is more of a futuristic "simulation" than a game. That is the key thing to remember when deciding to purchase it. I had some fun, but ultimately it was not the best use of my gaming time. The coolest thing was to be able to go from high orbit to planet fall and watch it all happen in real-time. That's some pretty snazzy graphics if you ask me.

Simulation isn't bad. I've never tried something as complex as this, and I think I'd probably enjoy it. Also flying through space for a long time just enhances the game for me. It's more of a reward to get somewhere after traveling for a long time, and the longer it is, the more realistic it is to me.

Sorry guys...my comments weren't directed at the current versions; BC 3000AD was probably the first playable version of his game to be released and you should probably try that on merit. My memories go WAY back when Derek Smart did a dubious distribution deal with a UK company and ended up selling boxes containing CDs that really were literally unplayable (these were long before BC 3000AD). He would hit the boards as a champion of sole independent deveopers, quoting his extensive qualifications...then others would do the research and discover, eg no one with that name ever got a PhD at the university he claimed to have attended, etc. At the time, it was a riot!

I'm not here to defend Mr. Smart, but I do believe he was pretty upset at the publishers of his original opus for rushing it to retail before it was ready. He did continue to patch it extensively as well. I think that's why he does his own publishing now... I think. :notsure:

Smart seems to have his following. I'm neutral toward him, although in the past I've found some of his published interviews to be quite entertaining.

As a game maker, I hope he makes good and fun games. The world needs more fun.

Ahhh...memories of the old "Starflight" games...when EA was about more than Madden titles. I would trade my MOO3 coaster in a heartbeat if anybody did an update on those titles with modern graphics.

Well, it depends on how interesting the actual "fly through space" part really is. I liked the way it was in Privateer, myself (though that's not a space simulator, I know) - it autopilots between jump points, but you have to choose them yourself, one at a time (though it would be nice to plot the whole trip at once). That way, you still feel the difference between a one-jump and a six-jump trip, but you don't need a book to read while you're waiting. Of course, if any enemies or asteroids show up on your flight path, the autopilot turns off.

I don't like the games where I have to sit there and watch stars fly past for ages with absolutely nothing to do. If it's a mission where you have to defend a base and the scripted enemies don't show up until 6 mins, 18 secs, exactly, have a time accel function at least. I've got enough reading time with the usual game loading time, thank you very much.

Oh, and I just remembered how much I liked the original I-War as a space simulator. Inertia sure was fun. Never got around to getting the sequel, though.

If we're playing desert island choosing games, I'd take Lyta from B5. Preferably in one of her caring, sharing moods, not her "i can fry your brain in an instant" ones. No leather catsuits - but she did have some black leather clothes, I think. Oh, and the gloves, of course. But I won't say that, it'd be too geeky.

PS. I believe Rainbird's nurse outfit isn't leather. She just needs a normal (albeit hot) outfit that lets her go around hospitals and give people the wrong pills. Of course, she could have some more outfits for after hours, but that's none of my business.
